“People are sheep. TV is the shepherd.” (Jess C. Scott, 2012)
Mass media is a significant force in modern culture, it affects us in ways that we may not be completely aware of. Take for example, your vocabulary, most likely you will have a phrase or quote that you have picked up on through media exposure, maybe it is a phrase that is easily distinguishable among viewers of a certain show. For instance, “legen wait for it dary” said by Barney Stinson in how I met your mother. In addition, you may also be affected by other media than just television shows, gamers are a sub-culture were you can often hear words like “pwnd” “leet” or “epic” is this something good that we want in our culture? Another point to consider, is that the media affects more than just your vocabulary, it also affects fashion trends and even certain behaviours, hence the quote “people are sheep, TV is the shepherd” (Jess C. Scott, 2012) and that is what this text is going to be about, how the media exposure affects us in our day to day lives. Therefore, Firstly, I would like to discuss how the media have affected us in a negative way. Secondly, I would like to talk about what positive effects it may have on us and thirdly, I would like to give my own opinion on the matter.
Firstly, I would like to discuss how the media have affected us in a negative way. People today spend multiple hours a week on watching television and may not be aware how much it affects their day to day life, young teens
In a culture that increased in greed and a world of instant gratification media has and will continue to become skewed and not beneficial for the whole of
Some positive effects could include an easier way to communicate among countries and groups and spread good and full hearted ideas. Secondly the power of the media could be domesticated by the government if it were official. It also could be used to support a cause that a certain official stands for and would benefit many lives. Lastly it could also support the United States of America and its citizens through what may occur. Some negative effects may be it being used against the other branches of government and then they would get a greater amount of power.
Media is very powerful because it can change human perspectives. Because people mainly rely on news and other media, it’s very important to learn their message. Media can use a manipulative message to persuade the audience and publish false stereotypes. Stereotypes like poverty, illiteracy, and violence, regard African American can have a negative impact on black people that usually we feel less worthy than others. African people are commonly portrayed by media as poor or from lower class family.
The main objectives in chapter 9 include the ways media attempt to influence people’s attitudes, beliefs, and/or behavior, ways media technology can be disruptive and have adverse effects on behavior, the positive and negative influences of certain kinds of media, such as advertisements or reality television programs, on self-image. Even though media is a great outlet, media has changed our generation causing effects on self-image and human interactions. Because of its pervasiveness in American culture, the media affects people in both obvious and subtle ways. Modern media comes in many different formats, including newspapers, magazines, television, social media, etc.
Mass media can have an effect on a person perception. It can change the way a person thinks or acts toward other people. Watching a particular movie or a television show can allow people to create assumptions about a certain group of people. Stereotypes are shown through the media in race, gender and social classes (Croteau 192). The people from the Middle East are one particular example of a race that is that is depicted in a negative light.
In The views of The Birmingham School, media culture induces individuals to conform to the established organization of society but it also lends resources that can empower individual against that society. (Kellner, D (1995)) In conclusion, calling attention to mass media, cultural studies relates to how the audience can decode the messages put forward by the media. More specifically in relation to their individual socio and economic background. This in turn can lead to the rejection of the dominant ideology.
Media affect teenagers the most because they spend a lot of time exploring things on it and this could harm them in a negative way. For example: when teenagers watch romantic movies, they could act differently to their love life because they got influenced by the things that they watched. Teenagers could change their behavior due to the things they watch on TV shows, movies, and videos. The young people of today appear to be excessively fascinated in viewing their most loved shows on TV or utilizing web-based social networking
The wellsprings of the media picked are unmistakable. As Jay Blumler brings up in his book The Use of Mass Communication, where he asserts that studies have demonstrated that crowd satisfactions can be gotten from no less than three particular sources: media content, introduction to the media in essence, and social connection that encapsulates the circumstance of presentation to various media (Blumler 1974). It is clear that groups of viewers invest energy utilizing the media as a part of different ways. Whether they are killing time or utilizing it as a social instrument, every medium is novel in its motivation.
According to Baran (2012) mass communication can be defined as “the process of creating shared meaning between the mass media and their audiences.” This essay aims to discuss the degree to which we are shaped by our interaction with the media. In order to achieve the aforementioned aim of this essay I will focus on the following: limited-effects theory, two-step flow theory, attitude change theory and agenda setting. The limited effects theory sets out that media influence is based on individual and social characteristics.
For years people have played the “blame game” with media and its effects on society. It has been questioned whether the media helps or hurts more in its overall impacts. The media consists of magazines, advertisements, TV shows, and social pages such as Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, and Facebook, all in which society seems to be addicted to. The real question is, is having all of these sources of media positively or negatively affecting society? Some people blame the media for harming society by causing eating disorders and a low self esteem.
In this advance era, mass media plays a significant role towards all of us and we can truly admit that mass media is one of the basic essenssial that used by everyone in their daily life. Generally, mass media is a print and electronic means of communication that spreads messages to the audiences and carries out information to the people in the society. Mass media can be divided into two categories, which is the print media include like newspaper, magazines, and books. Another mass media is the electronic media include like radio, television, and internet which is used by most of the people nowadays. Media is one of the most influential aspects of our lives.
Media are platforms of mass communication that can be categorized as either new of traditional media, with new media being forms of communication that make use of technologies such as the Internet, and traditional media being more conventional forms of media such as newspapers. Media, primarily new media, is getting more popular and influential, especially in today’s day and age since we are exposed to it a lot more than in the past and also since media is more easily accessible now. The media can shape our behaviours, perceptions and opinions, and it is important to know how people are influenced and impacted by it. The media can influence someone’s perception of social reality, or perceptions of beauty or even influence people’s behaviours and habits and therefore, the media does shape who we are. One way that the media can shape who we are is by influencing our perception of social reality.
The theory explains “how individuals use mass communication to gratify their needs” (Burgeon, Hunsaker and Dawson, 1994, cited in Udende and Azeez, 2010, p. 34). The theory holds that “people influence the effects that mass media have on them” (Anaeto et al, 2008 cited in Edegoh, Asemah and Nwammuo, 2013, p. 23). The assumption of the theory is that people are not just passive receivers of media messages; rather, they actively influence the message effects. Media audience selectively choose, attend to, perceive and retain media offerings on the basis of their needs, beliefs, etc., thus, “there are as many reasons for using the media as there are media users”
There are many effects of media on society and they are positive as well as negative. Some of them are given below:
Media is critical in today 's society because the mass media performs a number of es- essential functions in our lives. First, they serve an information or surveillance function. Second, they serve an agenda-setting and interpretation function. Third, they help us create and maintain connections with various groups in society. Fourth, they help us socialise and educate us.
