Communication is a very important part of our lives and interpersonal relations. That is the obvious fact well known by everybody. However, it is not easy to define and to answer the question ‘what is communication?’. Even great scholars and academic teachers have difficulties with defining that term. As a proof of that, in 1970 and 1984 Frank Dance went through 126 published definition of communication, and came to the conclusion that it is impossible to develop a single definition. However, Laura Hahn, Lance Lippert, and Scott Paynton defined communication as the process of using symbols to exchange meaning (2011:4). Another definition of that term was provided on National Joint Committee for the Communicative Needs of Persons with Severe …show more content…
Models of communication
To get the better understanding of communication’s definition, it is necessary to take a look at two models of communication: The Mathematical or Linear Model of Communication and the transactional model of communication (Hahn, Lippert, Paynton 2011:5-6). The mathematical model of communication is a model which makes moves only in one direction, where the sender encodes the message by using a certain channel and the message is decoded by the receiver. Simply saying it is a transportation of a message from one party to another. Watching television is a perfect example of this model. In that case, a receiver is a person who watches television and receives messages from the television program (the source). The second model of communication is the transactional model, where both sides of communication exchange act as both sender and receiver simultaneously, encoding and decoding messages to and from each other at the same time). This model occurs in majority of human communication exchanges. It is crucial for face-to-face conversation. Noise and personal filters always have impact on the outcomes of every communication exchange.

Symbols are arbitrary representations of thoughts, ideas, emotions, objects, or actions used to encode and decode meaning (Nelson & Kessler Saw, 2002: 28). Let us identify three main qualities of symbols: arbitrary, ambiguous, and abstract. Arbitrary means that symbols do not have direct relationship to the objects or ideas they represents (Duck, 1993:47). The communication is considered as successful when the agreement on the meanings of the used symbols is reached. The verbal symbols are also ambiguous, which means that they have several feasible meanings. The abstract means that ‘words are not material or physical. A certain level of abstraction is inherent in the fact that symbols can only represent objects and ideas. Verbal communication is also rule-governed. This feature stands for the obligation of following agreed-upon rules in order to create sense of the symbols we
Symbolism is basically the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. The author uses the symbols to express mystical ideas, emotions and state of mind. Generally it is an object representing an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant and sometimes even a word spoken by a person might have a symbolic value. The author uses symbolism to display his perspective of the nature of human. Piggy, Jack, Simon and Ralph could be viewed as symbolic characters in William Golding’s novel the Lord of the Flies.
Symbols, the meaningful representations that we constantly come across throughout our lifetimes, live within the minds of each human in our society. Not only is it associated with great meanings, it provokes many emotions that we feel such as aggressiveness or delightment. Symbols are extremely expressive and can change how our behavior may come about. For example, heart signs, logos, money and even religious flags have enough power to instantly change a person’s behavior when particular symbols are being encountered. Many experiments, tested by featured psychologists in the book, Drunk Tank Pink by Adam Alter, reveal surprising results when people are faced or reminded with even a glimpse of a symbol.
The central idea of Symbolic interactionism is symbols are the key to understanding how we view the world and communicate with one another (page 13). In The Little Mermaid, the human artifacts that Ariel collects are symbols of how she views their world. Scuttle is symbol of how she communicates with the world above her. The Disney movie also helps children establish an explanation about relationships. This guides kids to discover how society defines relationships.
These messages enclose information, and the senders of these messages intend particular meanings to reach the receiver of the message, who will then attribute a meaning to the message. The intended meaning may be varying from the meaning attribute to the message by the receiver. This is not only due to the words was used but also by the non-verbal messages that are also sent (Fielding, 1995). Heath (1997) stated that communication occurs in various ways and at diverse levels of awareness. Barber (1993, cited in Heath, 1997) states that communication is that sharing understandings and involves openness to the enquiry of another person, having attention, perception, receptivity and empathy towards that person.
Symbolism is the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. In Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson uses literary devices to help the reader better understand Melinda’s personal changes and growth. Trees, lips, and coldness are all symbolically used to represent the changes of Melinda. Throughout the novel, trees play a big part in symbolizing Melinda. Melinda is constantly drawing and relating to trees in the book.
This theory was made by Michael Argyle (1925- 2002), who was a social psychologist. In the late 1960s he studied social skills, body language, non-verbal communication and interpersonal behaviour. In this study, he found that non-verbal signals can be much more important and useful than verbal communication when trying to trigger peoples’ attitudes and feelings. His research showed and found that the stronger the relationship between the people communicating so with close friends for example the much better eye contact. However, when the relationship is not very strong so when speaking to a stranger people don’t have very good eye contact and they tend to look away when talking.

For this task I am going to discuss theories of communication which will be formatted in a booklet. I will also explain Argyle’s communication cycle and Tuckman’s group interaction. Argyles communication cycle When communicating with one another people must come to terms by trying to have an understanding of what the other person is trying to say. Communication is a circular process in which each person must have an understanding of one another’s viewpoint, they must also make sure that they are being understood.
Symbolism, word choice, and how cluttered or simple the cartoons are a few of the many ways to show how the world can interpret the meaning of the cartoon. Through the different cartoons symbolism is used to be able to find the true meaning. The items that are displayed in the images are just one part of a puzzle. The placement and shape of the object help construct a lesson that the cartoonist is trying to teach.
Communication is the process of transferring of information. Viswanathan (2010) says communication can take many forms of verbal and non-verbal methods which may include speaking, writing, gestures, expressions, listening and body language to name a few. All of these things should be taken into consideration to ensure an effective means of sending and receiving information. How and what information is sent may not be received in the same manner intended.

Introduction Throughout the 20th century and even today, Disney has been a major part of children’s youth. When children are young, they can be taught anything and they learn it very quickly. In our society, young children learn the religion when they are so young. When the child watches a Disney cartoon or movie they tend to imagine what would it be like to have the life shown in Disney. Disney creates an imaginative land in the minds of the children that the can do whatever, and be whatever they want, they are only limited by their imagination.

In the business communication, these three factors are described as interpersonal communication, intercultural communication and organizational communication. By handling problems that bring by these factors, the communication within the group will be more efficiency. In a group working, an effective communication can help us have a better understanding of others’ opinions, this is the fountainhead of productivity and efficiency.
Introduction: Communication is sharing process which involves expressing ideas, thoughts, feelings or sending the right message that is also being correctly received and understand by the other person/s who is receiving it on the other end. We all communicate with others in our lives. We communicate with our families, when we go shopping, at school or college or chat with friends. Communication with others is a natural part of life.
What is communication? Communication is about passing messages between people or organisations. Messages between a sender and receiver take place using a medium such as email or phone. One-way communication is when the receiver cannot respond to a message.
