INTRODUCTION
Pyschologists have tried to explain the phenomenon that is personality in human beings. This resulted in theories that attempt to explain how personality develops and how we become who we are. This essay will focus on the Freudian theory (psychoanalytic theory) and the Jungian theory (neopsychoanalytic theory) and will compare and contrast the two personality theories as well as highlight the major theoretical similarities and differences using examples
DESCRIPTION OF THE THEORIES
The psychoanalytic Theory
Although did not come up with the idea of the conscious and the unconscious mind, he was the one responsible for making the idea quite popular. He divided consciousness into three categories first the conscious mind which

With regard to the id he proposed that at birth, the nervous system the id is at its purest form (Boeree 2006: 6) . The id operates based on a pleasure principle, which means that it demands to its needs to be taken care on immediately. For example a hungry baby will carry on crying even if it doesn 't "know" what it wants in the way adults do; the baby just knows that it wants it and it wants it now (Boeree 2006: 6) . When what the id wants is not satisfied, the desire will only become more persistent until one reaches a point where they can only think of the said desire. In order to balance the id, there is the part of the mind that is connected to the world through perception which is called the ego (Boeree 2006: 5). The ego operates on a reality principle where it is meant to keep the id, which in turn will keep the person, happy. It tackles obstacles in the world which will sometimes help it to achieve its goals. There is then the superego which is only fully developed at the age seven however it might not be completed in some people (Boeree 2006: 5). It makes want it wants known to the ego with emotions like pride, shame, and guilt. These wants easily contradict with the ones from the id and so it can be said that the superego is representative of society (Boeree 2006: …show more content…
The first is the shadow which the animalistic side of a person where one is only concerned with survival and reproduction; it is the unpleasant of a person. The shadow is not anything good or bad, it is much like an animal that will kill another for food but that same animal will take care of its young, this means that it does not choose to do what it does (Boeree 2006: 5) . This side is rejected by humans and we will often refuse to admit to it. The next archetype Jung identified is the persona which acts as a mask one wears before presenting themselves to the world and represents one’s public image (Boeree 2006:5) . Jung also felt that within the persona, there is the role of male or female we must fulfill. Jung disregarded physical gender and was of the opinion that human beings are bisexual in nature. Jung identified the anima as the female essence as being present in the collective unconscious of men, while the animus (the male essence) is present in the collective unconscious of females (Boeree 2006: 7). The anima or animus is the archetype through which you communicate with the collective unconscious. Jung developed two personality types where he distinguished between introversion and extroversion. Introverts are people who prefer their internal world of thoughts and feeling as well whatever is an internal process in their mind while extroverts prefer the external world of things and people and activities (Boeree 2006: 7).
The concept that the id, ego, and superego control
In the current day society, listening to the daily news influences the average person to ponder upon the society as a haven or an epitome of human vice. Throughout time, humans have developed the universal question of whether man is ethically moral or sinful. Many factors lead to the psychological development of one’s self; in fact, some believe the cause of corruption smears an effect of darkness and taints the way one thinks. After years of studying the famous Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud’s theory of the unconscious mind, psychologists classify humans into three categories: the id, ego, and superego. While the id archetype defines as the dark personality structure that thrives in desolation and sorrow, the superego archetype aims for

However, looking beyond what is initially shown, a new context can adhered to the plot. Carl Jung’s theory of archetypal patterns delves into the human psyche by analyzing its parts. According to Jung, the human mind is split into three different parts; the ego, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious- which can be split into many different archetypes that impact personality (McLeod). Oates uses archetypes and symbolism to show the battle of a young girl trying make her own home and identity in a world that

One of Freud’s theories is that the “Id – Ego combination dominates a person’s behavior until social awareness leads to the emergence of the superego, which recognizes that
It is a theory used to explain human behaviour. Psychoanalytic theory states that the id, the ego, and the superego make up the human personality (Thornton, 2010). The id represents the instinctual drive for instant satisfactions. The job of the ego is to fulfill the demands of the
Isabella Hall Professor Hairston EH 242-W06 04/25/2023 Prometheus: The Consequences of Ego In the scope of Jungian interpretations of myth, Jung himself postulated that stories, much like dreams, are symbolic of the aspects of self that occur as a result of the collective unconscious trend and the process of individualization, or the completion of the awareness of self. These stories can be used to understand the aspects of an individual’s mind in the form of the archetypes—which each embody an aspect of the collective unconscious mind—made up of the persona, the shadow, the anima/animus, and the self. In the case of Prometheus, the narrative is a critique of the process of individualization and the use of emotional decisions. The Grecian trickster
Although Jung recognized the existence of many archetypes, he wrote extensively on only a few. These were the persona, the anima, the animus and the shadow. Persona, as documented by Hergenhahn and Olson (2003), is the Latin word for mask. The persona archetype develops because of humans’ needs to play a role in society.
Over the years, many theories have been developed to study the human personality. Some of the notable theories are psychoanalytic theory, trait theory, humanistic theory and behavioural theory. In this assignment, we have chosen to compare and contrast the psychoanalytic and humanistic theories. Psychoanalytic Theory
In “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, the dualistic issue dominating the novel, coincide with the Freudian concepts of instincts and today is known as a strong example of Freudian personality theory in fiction. Freud believed that the psyche is built of three structures which battle for dominance; the id, the ego and the superego. By using his theory we are

In 1923, Sigmund Freud proposed his theory that the make-up of an individual’s personality is largely governed by three fundamental components: the id, the ego, and the superego. Working through the unconscious and shaping behavior according to psychological fixations and conflicts or lack thereof, these elements evolve through five levels of psychosexual development (Freud, 1962). However, in spite of its compelling approach to the phenomenon, Freud’s structural theory of personality is riddled with limitations and as such, is subject to much criticism. The mind is layered into three states: the conscious, referring to the thoughts currently in our forefront; the preconscious, idle thoughts that can be easily accessed and brought to the conscious; and the unconscious, which houses the more instinctual drives that are repressed because it threatens the conscious’ equilibrium (Cloninger, 1996).
Sigmund Freud is Psychology’s most famous psychoanalysis. His work and theories have helped shape our views of personality, levels of consciousness and unconsciousness mind, the structure of personality and the development of personality. There are three aspects to Freud’s theory of personality structure and fives stages through the psychosexual development. The psyche
