INTRODUCTION Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan-born American novelist and physician. He has published three novels, most notably his 2003 debut The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner is the story of Amir who struggles to find his place in the world. The novel shows how the complex relationships in Amir’s life overlap and connect to make him the character he is. The first impression that one gets about Amir is that of an ordinary young boy.
Amir carries his love of writing to America, not only majoring in creative writing, but also going on to become a successful writer “The novel was released in the summer of that following year, 1989, and the publisher sent me on a five-city book tour” (183). Baba was by no means thrifty while in Afghanistan, and this carries into America. Baba lives long enough to be able to see Amir and Soraya’s wedding and, just like Amir’s 13th birthday party, he spared no expense, providing everything from the rings to the venue for Amir. “Baba spent $35,000, nearly the balance of his life savings, on the awroussi, the wedding ceremony” (169). Baba is also just as liberal in his way of thinking in America as he was before, openly drawing the ire of fellow Afghans with his politics “What they don’t understand...is that religion has nothing to do with it”
He is the first person to read and praise Amir’s stories, something that has great impact on Amir. Through simple yet genuine remarks, Rahim is able to “encourage [Amir] to pursue writing [more] than any compliment” has done, indicating the value of his words in Amir’s eyes, and the strong bond that the two share (Hosseini 14). As Amir transitions into adulthood, Rahim’s role in the friendship shifts into someone who must push Amir to do what is best. He understands that the only way to convince Amir to go back to Afghanistan is through painful reminders of the past, demonstrated through telling Amir that “there is a way to be good again”, and by questioning Amir’s courage, accusing Amir of being a “man who can’t stand up to anything” (Hosseini 2, 233). In contrast, Rahim also exhibits a sense of tenderness and caring when needed.
Khaled Hosseini was an Afghani immigrant who belonged to Kabul, his early life was spent in Kabul and he had seen the days of peace and affluence. Hosseini enjoyed all the amenities of life since his father was a reputed diplomat. It was a pride for him to be the son of a learned mother who taught him history and culture of Persia. Hosseini learnt Persian from his mother and read Persian poetry. It is observed that Hosseini borrowed heavily from the real events of Kabul and used his imagination to give them a concrete shape in his novels The Kite Runner (2003) and A Thousand Splendid Suns occurred in Kabul.
Whilst living in America, he published three bestselling novels, one of which is The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner novel depicts the Afghanistan condition from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime (Kurilah, 2009). It can thus be said that the author got the interest to write this piece of writing as a result
The story ‘The Kite Runner’, written by Khaled Hosseini, takes place mainly during the war in Afghanistan. After the country became a republic instead of a monarchy, the former Soviet Union invaded the country. Many years later, the Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist movement , seized power in Afghanistan. This was accompanied by intense violence and the consequences were immense. Not only was Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, almost entirely destroyed, but the cost to human life was also huge.
Hassan works through the themes of, families bring comfort and conflict, defining moments and finding my way, and man’s inhumanity to man. “ I forbid you to do this!” Baba bellowed. “Do you hear me ? I forbid you” (Hosseini 107)!
This will be portrayed by the different characters throughout the novel. Fistrly, In his work, Khaled follows the maturation of Amir, an Afghan boy, who was forced out of his country due to unrest. The protagonist, Amir, has an affluent life with his father, Baba, and their servants Hassan and Ali. During their early life, Amir and Hassan are inseparable friends and always engage in kite fighting tournaments.
Every morning when Amir wakes up, Hassan has already prepared his breakfast and organised his clothes for the day. Amir often reads books to Hassan as he cannot read or write himself, and very much enjoys this. He loves the stories that Amir reads him but the best story Amir had ever read to Hassan was a fictional tale Amir made up on the spot. In the novel, there is a section where Hassan’s bravery is shown when he stands up to a bunch of bullies to protect Amir and himself.
Before the event, he lives in a nice home in Kabul, Afghanistan, with Baba, his father. They have two servants, Ali and his son, Hassan, who are Hazaras, an ethnic minority. Baba’s close friend, Rahim Khan, is also around often. When Afghanistan’s king is overthrown, things begin to change. One day, Amir and Hassan are playing when they run into three boys, Assef, Wali, and Kamal.
Discovering this leaves Amir feeling completely betrayed, “How could you hide this from me? From him?” (Housseini 223), reacting in a fairly predictable manner. Because of this, Amir and Hassan naturally form a dependency on their fathers, allowing the boys to relate to one and other on a deeper, more personal level. From that, a point of similarity presents itself that connects Baba and Ali.
