The Last Dragonslayer written by Jasper Fforde was first published in 2010. This story occurs in this time period, though it’s mixed with some old cultures. The story is told in first-person perspective, as told by the main character, Jennifer Strange. There are three main characters. They are, Jennifer Strange, who is the sixth foundlings, or an sixth orphan sended to the Mystical Art Management, which is a famous company, and seems like she enjoys her job there.; Tiger, who is the seventh and new foundling that is sended to the Mystical Art Management.; and Gordon Van Gordon, who became the apprentice of Jennifer, after she discovers that she is the last and famous last dragonslayer. Typical Jennifer Strange, a sixteen years-old girl, …show more content…
I felt betrayed when Maltcassion told Jennifer about the truth of the Mighty Shander, who had the most power of magic between peoples (268~271). When Gordon Van Gordon tried to kill Jennifer and the Quarkbeast, a fantasy animal with sharp teeth and can eat almost anything, and actually killed Quarkbeast, because Quarkbeast sacrificed his body to save Jennifer, I literally cried. I did learn anything new in this book. I was also made more aware of the human nature when the baby dragon told Jennifer about Greed, that it can make the Magic really strong, “ ‘...The power that comes closest to the energy that makes up what we call magic is human emotion…’ ‘...greed is all powerful; greed conquers all. Greed channeled the Big Magic; greed set us free…’” (pg.282). I learned that Greed can be such a big power that human can do anything for it. The character in the story seemed believable to me. I could not relate to the because, Jennifer and other characters had a characteristics that I didn’t had. Or, something I had but not them. I especially liked Tiger because, he was smart and is able to lose adults by smartness, and his outstanding ideas. I recommend this book overall, because, you can actually learn several things, for instance don’t judge somebody because of their power. (Look 268~271) Maltcassion told the truth about the Mighty Shandar, prisoning the innocent Dragons. And, that “‘Greed conquers us all..’”
Introduction: The glass castle by Jeannette Walls is the book I chose to read for our summer reading assignment. The glass castle is about 3, eventually 4 kids who have always been told to chase their dreams no matter what happens or where it takes them. The parents which consists of a selfish mom who does stuff to benefit her own needs and a dad who’s a drunk, live by this quote and unfortunately chasing their dream leads them to live their life in poverty, filled with lies, misery, and struggle but with a little hard work, and perseverance the walls children flourish. Summary: The story starts off with little Jeannette walls at the age of three making herself a hotdog.
Andrew Carnegie starts to make clear that the societies are ultimately paying for the law of competition. He then states that it is not essentially a depraved thing because it has prepared us to progress as a
Greed is an emotion that can easily change good people into someone they are not. In both the Salem witch trials and the McCarthy era, greed was a substantial contributor to the escalation of chaos that is evident. In the play, the need for self preservation makes many characters turn on each other. The Crucible conveys that greed is a compelling emotion that can alter one's choices.
“The Majority of human beings are not yet human beings at all, but simply machines for creating of wealth for others. ”(Sinclair
This quote highlights how easily personal gain can be prioritized over principles
I was always under the impression that witches were much like practitioners of voodoo, but this is simply not the case. While voodoo is purely demonic and dark, witchcraft seems to harness demonic power in a much lighter feeling way by claiming to provide healing, not harm. This book definitely showed me what witchcraft truly is to those who practice it, rather than the dramatic misconceptions from Hollywood and other media. From a spiritual aspect, this book was a challenge to read. I went into it knowing that I had to be careful and make sure that I kept reasserting the truth in my mind, and I did.
This quote goes along with the story The Devil and Tom Walker, where Tom Walker and his wife’s lifelong greed had caused there death. Greed is important in the story with the two characters meeting up with a third character who takes them for there greed. Whether it was an early death or a later death, the greed of Tom Walker and his wife stuck with them through there demise. The devil even shows trees to Tom to show the greed of the elite of the town to where the fall of the tree causes the death upon whose name is carved. During the beginning of the story, Tom meets this mysterious man in the swamp.
If people control their greed, they will be bountiful in other ways than wealth. They will have happiness in helping others by giving back, instead of keeping to oneself. If the greed is too large you will experience a lot of negative impacts. There are many topics involving greed, this essay involved somewhat it is about, the dangers, and the benefits of controlling the desire to gain. Even though the Pardoner’s Tale may be old, it will still be applicable throughout the present and the future.
Throughout the novel, characters discover that fear is relative and does not exist by itself. Greed is derived from one’s attachment to another person which is motivated by the fear of loss and the unwillingness
Greed can be a good thing if it is used for the right reasons. For example, greed can be the key that leads to success. If a person wants to achieve recognition, they’ll go extreme measures to make it happen such as inventing something, excelling in their studies, or even being the best. However, in most cases, greed can lead to disaster. Having the desire to obtain something a person already possesses is selfish.
Another sort of greed is how abbey was emotionally greedy she didn’t want the money she wanted john Procter. Due to her wanting john Procter she tried to kill his wife Elizabeth by saying she a witch. This also shoes that in the play how greed is a major theme because not only was their money greed there was emotional greed. Overall the play was full of greed because everyone was trying to take something out of the Salem witch trials which then led to more people being killed. This shows how the play was full of greed which led to a whole lot of people being
But with great responsibilities come great consequences, the consequence of greed is people seeing greed to be the same as being selfish. Despite this, the
The temptation of greed ended up killing the three men at the end of the tale. ”The Pardoner's Tale” provides a clear understanding that greed is a sin we all have to battle with in our lives, whereas the moral of the wife of bath's tale applies to people doing bad things. This tale teaches the reader a lesson about greed and how it can overcome people, making them do bad
“There is a sufficiency in the world for man 's need but not for man 's greed.” This quote was spoken from a wise Indian activist, what he says is a correlation towards the rising greed aspect of the character Macbeth. This play Macbeth was about a soldier who became greedy with power. It is about Macbeth’s Tyrant display when he kills Duncan and orders Banquo to be killed and other violent acts.
There was so much content and information that I had never even heard of until reading this book. It makes me think just how much other history has been stolen and not told rightly. All this time, I just assumed the rightful story was the one portrayed in the Disney movie. That sounds funny to type out, and quite ignorant. Finding out that she never married John Smith was eye opening for me.
