When we first read the story of the “The Last Leaf”, we always remember the frustrated old man named Behrman. Although he keeps claiming that he will soon paint a masterpiece, he did not start (or even attempted to start) even though many decades have passed. However, even though he is known for his sharp tongue, he somehow has a big heart, as shown in his concern towards the two young artists who live above him. The last leaf on the brick wall symbolizes “hope”. When Johnsy falls ill to pneumonia, she sees the last leaf as a way to depart life. As the leaves fall one by one, Johnsy’s hope and will to live fades away as she accepts her fate. Although Sue tries to divert Johnsy’s mind from such matters, she is convinced that there is no cure to her illness. Therefore Sue decided to seek help from Behrman. Upon seeing the last leaf, Behrman decided to take this opportunity to finally paint his masterpiece. His goal is not to earn admiration or profit, but to save the life of a person he cares for. Painting the last leaf on the wall so that it will not fall means fueling Johnsy’s will to live once again. Johnsy realizes how selfish she has been and decided to stand up to her illness. Sadly, as a result of this wonderful phenomena, Behrman (enduring a storm and coldness) falls ill and dies. …show more content…

The theme from the novel Willow and Twig written by Jean little that resonated with me was family, specifically the relationship between brother and sister. This theme stood out for me the most because it reminded me of how my brother and I acted together throughout my entire life. My brother and I are also half-brother and half-sister, but we never talk about it. Willow and Twig are also in the same situation but it never bothers them to act any differently either. Ever since I can remember my brother has called me by the name Twig, and I thought it was very ironic being the younger sibling in my family.
The first time I read The Death of John, I immediately recognized there were many archetypes within the words of the short story. An archetype is a typical character, an action or a situation that seems to represent such universal patterns of human nature. However, the short story does not limit itself to only one of these. The story begins with a conversation between a doctor and a nurse in an Army hospital.

Inferiority and Escape in the Yellow Wallpaper and the Turn of the Screw In Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper and Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, the restricted roles of late nineteenth century women are both presented through the protagonist of each story. As a response to these restricted roles, the narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper and the governess in The Turn of the Screw fixate on the ideas of power and dependence, and eventually, in both, they escape from their roles.
Some classmates felt that his last shred of hope to keep him alive was his hatred for the party while others agreed that his love for Julia would help him from conforming back to the ideals of the party. When discussing what another classmates have found in class it has helped me to understand other points I might have overlooked in the novels we have read. I have improved from these activities by writing down other points and
In A.S Byatt’s “The Thing in the Forest”, the author uses the elements of a short story to craft a dark, mature fairytale. The title of the story, “The Thing in the Forest”, in the sense that it foreshadows the main idea of the story. The audience expects more than just a "thing", as listed in the title. Byatt emphasizes through figurative language that the main characters, Penny and Primrose, are dealing with more than just a creature in the forest that affected them for the rest of their lives, and that with this use of symbols to express a larger meaning to objects in the story. A.S Byatt emphasizes more on plot and setting, characters, theme and symbols.
Jimmy Blevins, fatally shot, provided John with intuition about the importance of companionship. His death also provided knowledge of the consequences of the decisions a person makes. Although John had not known Blevins long, he felt a sort of responsibility for him, especially because he presumed he was younger than him by a couple of years. Even though their relationship was not a very close one, nobody wants to see anyone be executed for a mistake that was made at such a young age. This event saddened John, and made him feel about about, and even regret Blevins’ fate.

There are heroes among us that we don't see. These people show their bravery in acts of greatness whether they are saving people or other things of significant value to others. It is without a doubt that people like these are remembered for their acts of greatness and abiding service. Ways individuals like these are remembered are through people’s writing, or even monuments celebrating their acts of courage. Some heroes being commemorated through books are often written by people who were saved by that hero; furthermore, the individual saved must feel eternally grateful from the hero’s work.
For example, Goodman starts the essay by affirming Phil’s death was because, “He worked himself to death.” With a phrase so direct, it shows that Goodman feels little sorrow for Phil since he had done this to himself.
It 's worth saving those kids . Their lives are worth more than mine , they have more to live for . " " ( Hilton 178 ) . He saved kids he didn 't even know , Jonny truly knows what to fight for .
Here, Lethem describes the great journey he took as he attempted to track down the origin of a famous quote, but even this impressive path is nothing compared to all the influences that were combined in such a small piece of art. Every single artist that had touched the quote drew inspiration
The characters are waiting in ‘vain’ for Godot(Sternlicht 51). They are like other human beings who continue to wait, to hope that what they want in life will come to them someday. They never mind how long they will wait. They try to keep some communication with the others or maintain people with whom their lives are linked. Beckett thinks that “the modern artist” is like someone in a trap because there is nothing to express but the main artist’s work, paradoxically, is to express.
