When most people think of the beginning of North America they think of the first successful settlement, Jamestown, but this was not the actual first attempt in the New World. The settlement at Roanoke was the first attempt to colonize the New World in 1587. The colony on the island Roanoke is often referred to as the “Lost Colony” because of its unusual disappearance. The disappearance of the colony Roanoke, is one of the most significant events known to archeologist, historians, explorers and enthusiasts as America’s longest ongoing historical mystery. The Lost Colony of Roanoke was the last of three attempts of colonization and till the successful Jamestown. The first group of men came to “scout out” the New World for future colonies. The second group was there for military and scientific reason, who was later pushed out due to “bad blood” with neighboring Indians and was far from peaceful. The third and final group came to settle, bringing women and children including John White 's family. John White first came to the New World with the second group of men. Having lived there for 13 months he had painted 70 watercolors of Indians of their ceremonies, their leaders, how they looked, and of them in their everyday life. April 27, 1584 is when the first voyage took place to Roanoke Island, Sir Walter Raleigh sent an expedition led by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to explore the east coast of North America. While exploring they found an Island which is Roanoke Island they found this Island on July 4th. Barlowe found two Croatoans ( small Native American group living in the area) and there names are Manteo and Wanchese Barlowe brought them to England and the two men where able to describe the geography of the area to Sir Walter Raleigh.

What happened to the Lost Colony? There are many different theories and opinions on what really happened to the lost colony of Roanoke. Some are backed up by facts and science and others are total hoaxes. My opinion based on the documents, is that the colonists ran out of supplies, tried to leave the area for Croatoan, and sunk at sea because they couldn't build sufficient boats.

John White John White, who was assumed to be born around the year 1540, is a well known British artist and cartographer, and is also known as the governor of the second English expedition of the Roanoke Islands. Very little is known about White’s life before his creations of art began and after he returned back to England from his discovery of the lost colony, but the time period that is marked by those two life experiences are the ones that John White is famous for. White’s first trip to America was on 1577 when he came aboard the ship Aid whose mission was to find precious metals and a passage to Asia, neither of which were achieved. Although the actual mission of the ship failed, White was able to draw detailed sketches of the people and the land they encountered.

In the summer of 1588 the English navy was able to destroy the Spanish Armada. The naval battles ended and White was finally able to get back to his colony. Their ships had man made issues and they left at the peak of Hurricane season which delayed their arrival to Roanoke Colony . “When they arrived at Roanoke Island on August 18, 1590--coincidentally, the third birthday of little Virginia Dare--they found the settlement long abandoned”(“The Voyages”). Since, Virginia Dare was the first born in Roanoke meaning, White had been gone for three years and the colony just disappeared out of thin air.

Jamestown may have prospered, given proper usage of time and energy. The colonists of Jamestown have made many mistakes, which led to the downfall of Jamestown. Many were not prepared to colonize. If changes were made to the types of people sent, location, supplies sent, government and plans of growth, Jamestown surely would have done much better. With these changes, the outcome of colonizing in Jamestown would have been much easier and prosperous.

This century technology is really good scientists may be able to find out what really happened to the lost colony of Roanoke say the National Geologists scientists. I think that the lost colony that the colony just killed by disease or they just simply left the settlement. There are a lot of theories what happened to the lost colony.

The colonists of Roanoke went to Croatoan. When John White came back to Roanoke after three years of waiting in England, he found the island deserted. He found carved on a tree Croatoan. The colonists had told White if they moved they would carve it on a tree. He knew that the people of Roanoke went there.

The Roanoke colony, also known as “The Lost Colony” was founded in 1585. The first couple years seemed to be going well until John White had to sail back to England for supplies. When he returned the whole colony had been deserted, and all 117 had gone missing.

The English colonists on Roanoke Island lived in homes near native villages, but after vanishing without a trace, they are now called the Lost Colony. When John White finally returned to Roanoke Island in 1590, the English colony had vanished, and he allegedly found the words 'CRO ' and 'CROATOAN ' carved on two trees. When White saw that, he thought that the colonists got help from the Croatan Indians on Hatteras Island. The Croatans were peaceful and friendly with the settlers, so the English could have a good relationship with them when the colony was established in 1587. There are many theories about what happened to them: one of them is that they managed to integrate themselves with the Croatan people.

In 1585, an expedition was sent by Raleigh that led to the building of a fort on Roanoke. English colonialists, amounting to almost 100 arrived at the coast of Chesapeake Bay in 1607. Jamestown was founded, which was among the first English settlements to be set in North America. These colonialists were exposed to many adversaries and dangers that included hunger, diseases, and attack from Indians.

The colonists of Early Jamestown did not know what they were going to experience in the New World, and they were not prepared. This took place from 1607-1611. The colonists arrived in Chesapeake Bay in 1607. They had hopes to find new land. Sadly, out of the 500 colonists that arrived in Jamestown, 80% died.Just between 1609 and 1610, 110 settlers died from famine and disease. In 1607, there was only one surgeon for hundreds of men. Colonists died in early Jamestown because of three main problems. These problems were Starvation, Native American Relations, and Disease.
