By being a part of Writing 39 B class, I have studied many important rules of the academic writing, which will help me to succeed in my future career. For example, I used a quote from Peter Guber’s text, “The Inside Story”, that:” telling purposeful stories is certainly the most efficient means of persuasion in everyday life, the most effective way of translating ideas into action,” to prove my belief that Oates wrote her article “The Lost Sister: An Elegy” in order to persuade her audience to change their opinions on autism. I used this quote as an argument in my essay by saying that:” every persuasive story plays a great role in explaining the importance of it’s message” and that Oates’s story will make its readers “become more caring for the mentally challenged people’s families, because they would realize that the mental health is the product of neurology not bad mothering” (Talonova, 6). By using Guber’s quote, I have more successfully explained my audience what effect persuasive stories should have on reader and had improved my ethos by using credible source. Sources can play important role in creating the argument in the text, because they demonstrate the opinion of credible authorities and statistics, which prove the author’s opinions, making them more reliable and
As an English professor in the University of Maryland, Jeanne Fahnestock is one of the modern rhetoricians with several master pieces. She mostly focuses on scientific rhetorical analysis in argument, especially in word choice and figures of speech. Her notable works are Rhetorical Gigures in Science(2002), A Rhetoric or Argument(2003) with Marie Secor, Rhetorical Style: The Uses of Language in Persuasion(2011). The book A Rhetoric of Argument with Marie Secor discusses about arguments in four aspects: definition arguments, causal arguments, evaluation arguments and proposal arguments. These four aspects, now become standard in many argument texts, give readers a constructive, engaging way to analyze arguments by other writers and to construct their own arguments.
For example, when discussing the myth about verbal deprivation, Wolfram says “ the results of standardized language testing support the conclusion that disadvantaged children of almost every kind are typically one or two years in language development (Carl Bereiter, p. 196)”(106). In this quote wolfram is using Ethos. Ethos is when the author uses credibility and authority to support their argument. In this quote, Wolfram is using information from Carl Berieter to support his argument that Black children are verbally deprived. Another example of Wolfram using rhetorical appeals is when he says “At first glance this reasoning seems sensible- if one assumes that parents and caretakers must play a proactive role for language acquisition to take place”(107).
In They Say/ I say, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein informs the audience of the basic moves in academic writing through text, illustrations, and templates. Their main model in this book is they say/I say template, in which it helps writers to develop their arguments by paying attention to what others are saying, and engaging with a response. The authors goal is to demystify academic writing, and return it to its social and conversational roots. The authors want the writers to engage in the ideas of others. These concepts from this book, will help make a stronger, supportive argument.
Thank You for Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion by Jay Heinrichs is a splendidly woven book that teaches people how to become rhetorical. Heinrichs spent many years working with the art of rhetorical persuasion. Even though he is a husband, father, teacher, and author, he always finds time to perfect his persuasion skills. Heinrichs’s main strategies which he uses constantly throughout the book are his backstories and examples; with that, his best chapter is Chapter nine: Control the Mood, and I believe this book should be used in college as ENGL 1301 study guides to help students get a better idea on the art of persuasion. Jay Heinrichs’s book, Thank You For Arguing, gives several techniques on how to become a more rhetorical and/or persuasive person.
Irvin’s conclusions are that writing has its own format and set of rules that differs with each kind of writing and will be subject to change by the writer. Evaluation: Irvin uses expository writing to state how academic writing is argumentative and has its own set of writing myths. Writing myths can happen to any form of writing using critical thinking skills to address the issue. Irvin states in his article that the intended audience is college students. This reading is effective as the myths can help the reader to understand certain layout for the different parts of

I believe that I have learned many useful lessons this semester. At the start of this semester I honestly did not know how to write a proper essay. There were several big problems with my writing style. My poor grammar and lack-luster writing skills were a real problem. I feel more confident now that I have written some decent papers and come close to completing my first English class.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.

There has been an assumption that academic writing is getting to be less formal as it is expected by many institutions. The informality in written work has become a standard thing in most public domains. With close observation, writers have literary shifted from the normal standards of writing and styles of writing that are impersonal. However, the assumption has not been examined in the recent past. In this paper, the issue is explored, and a trial is made in ascertaining whether less formality is being associated with academic writing.
