April 12, 1861, the day that the Confederates and the Union squared off in a Civil War that ended with a disastrous number of 600,000 fatalities. Several Compromises failed to fulfill their purpose of slavery and the issue of tariffs began to deteriorate the United States economically. Popular sovereignty and representatives in Congress determined the states rights for themselves. The Civil War was caused by the state’s rights and their need to escape the Union, slavery which poised a great threat to the breakable United States, and the economic differences that identified the strength and weaknesses of the North and South.
The effects of the Dred Scott decision were Sectional tensions between the north and south, Succession from the union, presidents could not use the term slavery or they would most definitely lose the election. The Contribution to the Civil war that the decision had was that the Republican party was formed, Which made the North and south closer to war. At least six hundred eighteen thousand Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the total even reached seven hundred thousand. The Civil War was caused by a feuding union, that knew it would not survive if things continued on in the devastating ways they were. No decisions could be made, people were arguing and weren’t getting along, and eventually the war began. Two of the most important causes of the Civil War were the Abolition Movement, and the Election of 1860. Although the Abolition Movement happened in the 1830’s, it was still a large cause of the Civil War.
Equal Protection involves the 13th and 14th amendment. An issue that they had in the past was slavery. Some people thought that it was not right to have blacks as slave. Even if you were black and free you had no rights to do anything, they were not citizens. Dred Scott is what caused the Civil War, which Abraham Lincoln was President of the northern states.
He appointed a cabinet composed of Northerners and Southerners and hoped to keep peace between the country’s pro-slavery and anti-slavery people, but it created lots of tension. People were accusing James of being biased to the southern colony interests and slavery issue. Two days after being in office, the U.S. Supreme Court gave a document that stated, “The federal government had no power to regulate slavery in the territories and denied African Americans the rights of U.S. citizens.” He hoped that the document would resolve the slavery issue, but he, “reportedly pressured a Northern justice to vote with the Southern majority in the case.” Then, the southerners were contempt, but the northerners were protesting, which led to diversity.
The cons were: you had to swear an oath to the U.S and had to agree that slavery was wrong , most people agreed that the 10% plan didn 't go far enough and the amnesty did not apply to confederate leaders. However, Truman and Eisenhower made it evident that the United States was fighting for innocent civilians worldwide, but they could not promise a steady government or country while the tension exists with Russia, but the nation is doing what they must(Document C).
The Civil War was an event that was almost inevitable due to the constant fighting and difference amongst the country. There was no equality and most people only decided on things in which they would be benefitted. The country could only endure so much more division before a war would occur. Numerous events such as John Brown’s Raid, The Compromise of 1820 and 1850, and Bleeding Kansas, but the most significant event is the Election of 1860. The Election of 1860 was significant because it was the start of extreme division between the people and the territories.
That same year, the act was passed and, due to the differences between the Democrats, the party split into Northern and Southern Democrats. In 1855, the residents of Kansas were to decide if the state would become a free or slave state. Many Kansas residents voted, but many proslavery residents from Missouri also voted. Controversially, the state ended up as a slave state. After the voting process, a series of violent outbreaks took place over the next few months.
The North covets to abolish slavery for African-Americans in the South. However, abolitionists helped slaves escape to the North. Abolitionist such as William Lloyd Garrison, John Brown, Gerrit Smith and Charles Lenox Remond were against practice of slavery. Therefore the Southern states should have been allowed to secede from the union as the government of the Union did not protect some of their given rights. First of all, the Southern states had the right to secede because the North had too much power over them. “In all the non-slave-holding States…the people have formed themselves into a great sectional party…based upon an unnatural feeling of hostility to these Southern States” (Document I). Based on this quote, the Northern states started to believe in the abolitionist movement too much; so much that they started to consider the slave states as their enemies. Even those who benefited from Southern slavery, such as textile manufacturers, did not wish to see slavery expand further west or north. The Kansas-Nebraska Act succeeded only in shifting Northern public opinion even further away from reconciliation with the South. The Kansas-Nebraska Act also caused the collapse of both the Whig and Democratic parties. The parties split according to section: to pass the act through Congress, Southern Whigs voted with Southern Democrats against their Northern counterparts for the first time in history.
Slavery was an extremely prominent and debated issue in the late 1800’s that ended up dividing the United States in half. There were the Northerners who opposed the institution of slavery and the Southerners who gave it their support. The controversy over the use of slavery had been an issue between the North and South for a long time but it became even more evident during the election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln ran in the Republican Party a group who had devoted itself to keeping slavery out of the new territories as the country expanded westward. The south feared abolitionists would use violence in order to deprive the south of slave property.
On April 12, 1861, a brutal war broke out between the north and the south called the Civil War. Some say the north, or Union, went to war to abolish slavery, but the south, or Confederates, went to war for states’ rights. Abraham Lincoln, who was president at the time, called the nation “a house divided” because the north and south did not agree. Four long years later, the Union won the victory on May 9, 1865.
