The Supreme Court declared that it was unconstitutional for Congress to legislate on the future of slavery in the territories, which allowed the spread of slavery throughout the union. The Supreme Courts stated whether enslaved or free African Americans could not be citizens. While the decision was well-received by slaveholders in the South, many northerners were
At first, most Republicans supported Johnson’s reconstruction policies. The goal was to restore the South and bring the states back to the Union. The new president would strive towards a speedy restoration of the states that seceded. It was as if they “had never truly ‘left’ the United States of America.” To start off, the new president had the former Confederate states acknowledge and ratify the Thirteenth Amendment, which officially abolished the institution of slavery. The end of slavery saw the rise of the Black Codes in the South.
Racism. A word that people either shy away from or express in their every day lives. Predominately, the South is stigmatized as being a very racist and confederate region of America. Throughout history there have been many incidents and events that have explicably revolved around the color of your skin. The Civil War was a war based off of opposing opinions to have slaves or not between the North and the South of the United States.
Lincoln was against slavery and with the possibility of his end-goal being the abolishment of slavery seven states where already done leaving the union before Lincoln had taken his place in the Oval Office. The Confederate states of America had been formed and it was composed of the pro-slavery states in the south. However, even though people in the north believed that the
The 1861-65 Civil War is widely considered a defining moment in American history. The outbreak of the war was the culmination of slow-burning sectional tensions, which came to a head with the secession of 11 Southern slaveholding states from the Union and the subsequent formation of the Confederacy. However, what initially began as a political disagreement quickly escalated into a conflict in April 1861 when the Confederacy insisted on their right to leave, which was met with vehement opposition by the loyal states. In the four years that fighting lasted, between 627,000 and 761,000 soldiers lost their lives alongside an indeterminate number of civilian casualties thus cementing the war as America’s deadliest ever conflict (Hacker 307). Whereas many scholars cite slavery as the primary cause of the War, perhaps the more critical issue was state rights and precisely the extent to which federal power could be exercised in the Union with slavery merely serving as a manifestation of this conflict.
Rachna Shah Causes of the Civil War Throughout the history of time, the wars that the United States have fought with include separate entities, powerful nations, and groups of European allies, but never before a war within itself: a civil war. What had prompted this war was not simply slavery, the obvious cause, but time itself, and the gradual increase of state support for such a war to occur. The American Civil War was, simply stating, a struggle to determine whether or not the country should illegalize the institution of slavery or not. For about two hundred years, the people within the United States had had slave states and free states, slave territories and free territories co-exist with one another. However, other more minor factors that influenced the Civil War to come about include Supreme Court Cases and new political viewpoints, the reluctance of slavery and free states to co-exist within a nation.
Dred Scott v. Sandford is one of the darkest cases in the history of the Supreme Court. After years of slavery, parts of the United States were beginning to head in a direction away from slavery. The establishment of the Missouri Compromise and gaining some territories as slave states and others as free states, was proof of this shift from slavery, especially in the north (Pearson Education Inc. 2005). The Scott v. Sandford decision, in which an African American man was denied both his freedom and his citizenship to the United States, did not link up with this new way of thinking. The divided opinion amongst the Justices illustrated the divided nation (Scott v. Sandford 1875).
The American Civil War The background and causes. the main cause of the civil war was the that seven states (South Carolina, the Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas) that have declared their secession from the USA and the prime reason for that secession was slavery as the Southern anger at the attempts by Northern antislavery political forces to stop the expansion of slavery into the western lands .although some authors said that the main cause of the civil war was the states right 's in the meaning of The Southern states wanted to make sure on their authority so that they could cancel the federal laws they didn 't support. But this may be the second cause not the prime cause because all the historians agreed that the main cause of the civil war was the slavery. The major characters of the civil war: The United States (the union). Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln: He was born in 1809.and was President of the United States during the Civil War from 1860-1865,in 1863 he emanated Emancipation Proclamation which announced that all slaves in the Confederate States would be set free this helped to end slavery.
Abraham Lincoln was part of the Republican Party, people who supported the abolitionist movement. The Southerners did not want him to become president, unlike the Northerners, because he would help the Northerners get rid of slavery in the South. Consequently, the Northern region of the country had more representatives in Congress as of 1860 because they had one-hundred and eighty congressmen plus their given two senators. The election of Abraham Lincoln would cause Southern states to leave the Union because they thought they would make slavery illegal and take away their slaves and the way they make
Another example is the Southern states’ secession from the United States. In this, eleven states seceded because of many reasons, including the fact that the North was against slavery, which was the main way the South made their profit, and that their newly elected president was completely against slavery and didn’t want it to spread to any other new territories the country would acquire. With the secession of the Southern states President Lincoln had to make sure the Union won the war so that the Confederacy would rejoin the country. To do this he instituted a draft and made sure European countries would have no reason to help the Confederacy. These actions ultimately proved to be very helpful, then and now.
