The flag of the Confederacy was also another symbol of Southern Nationalism. “The Confederate government quickly became for the South, the successor to the federal government at Washington. A flag, the “ Stars and Bars,” was adopted for the new republic after a study by a committee that concluded that keeping the United States “Stars and Stripes” would be impractical and unpatriotic.” Southerners feared that white supremacy was in danger and feared slave rebellions. This was heightened by national events like John Brown’s Raid. This unified the South against the abolition of slavery
“The war that ensued started at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861, and lasted four years”(Confederate.., pg1). The North and South were quite different, so during the Civil war, each side had advantages politically, socially, economically, and demographically. One of the Advantages the North had was Political. The South seceded from the Union because they feared the end to slavery, so when they left the union they had no government. After all of the states seceded, they announced the creation of the Confederate States of America.
At the end of the Civil War between the North and South arose the Reconstruction era. This was a time period of the late 1800s where the united states, specifically the North started to attempt the rebuilding of the South. Abolitionists were eager to see the end of slavery and Lincoln attempted to end slavery. President Lincoln attempted to put in place the Emancipation Proclamation which stated all slaves in confederate states would be free. This was to weaken the southern states; except, the confederate states did not obey.
Seward made the point that Slavery is only an intuition and can be removed from a state, and the state would remain, but if you remove freedom, it is no longer a state. He reminded everyone that there is an authority higher than the government, God, and that it was their responsibility to take care of everyone and all creation. William H. Seward closed his speech by stating that no free state would establish slavery, and if given the choice to go back no slave state would have established it. The Compromise of 1850 provoked various responses from different speakers, all agreeing the Union was in danger. The compromise was passed in order to protect United States from splintering, but it only delayed the war.
The Civil War was the deadliest war for the United States. Over 600,000 soldiers were killed between the two sides. The Confederacy and the Union were the two sides who were fighting, mostly over slavery. Each side had different strategies about fighting, therefor their military style was different. Both sides used different weapons and had different fighting tactics.
He guided his country through the most devastating experience in its national history, the ultimate strife from westward expansion the Civil War. Lincoln's victory in that election thus changed the racial future of the United States. The westward expansion of slavery was one of the most dynamic economic and social processes going on in this country” (Foner, E). Political deals, such as the Missouri Compromise in 1820, Compromise of 1850, Supreme Court rulings, and the Dred Scott decision in 1857, divided the country drastically. These divisions went far beyond cotton and economics.
The four bloody years spread havoc across the U.S. over the fight for slavery. This war left a mark on the American society for as long as it stands. One of its most bloody battles, The Battle of Gettysburg, caused the death or injury of 51,000 soldiers. This battle remains in U.S. history as one of the most catastrophic battles of all time. Loiselle Brett expresses this battle as being, “ A major battle was about to begin, without the knowledge of either army's commander.” Little did both
“Buchanan, a Democrat who was morally opposed to slavery but believed it was protected by the U.S. Constitution, was elected”( Source #5)This quote explains how another president had the same mindset of Abraham but still couldn't officially end slavery.”Taylor entered the White House at a time when the issue of slavery and its extension into the new western territories (including Texas) had caused a major rift between the North and South”(Source #7). This quote quote explains how other presidents made slavery worst. Although having different ideas than other presidents Abrahams’ assassination was unjustified because other American presidents did not make much changes or just made it worst. While Abraham Lincoln made on of the most important decisions by freeing the slaves. In conclusion, Abrahams assassination was needless because he was the first to have sympathy for slaves and made sure it ended and he lead America better than most other presidents.one thing to take from this essay is to support the correct leaders and dont support the incorrect
One of reasons the confederacy failed was because the U.S. Congress, with Lincoln’s support, proposed the 13th amendment which would abolish slavery in America. Although the confederate peace delegation was unwilling to accept a future without slavery, the radical and moderate Republicans designed a way to takeover the reconstruction program. The Radical Republicans wanted full citizenship rights for African Americans and wanted to implement harsh reconstruction policies toward the south. The radical republican views made up the majority of the Congress and helped to pass the 14th amendment which guaranteed equality under the law for all citizens, and protected freedmen from presidential vetoes, southern state legislatures, and federal court decisions. In 1869, Congress passed the fifteenth amendment stating that no citizen can be denied the right to vote because of “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” To destroy the confederacy and make the south rejoin the union, extreme legal measures such as passing amendments needed to be taken by the government to affirm Union’s power over the south.
This event did not go over well because it showed the north in an aggressive manner about being anti-slavery which caused more tension over slavery. Another key event that took place leading up to the Civil War was the Wilmot Proviso, which was a law that was created by David Wilmot of Pennsylvania. That had called for a ban on slavery in any lands won from the Mexican War. However it ended up not passing in Congress but this event heated up the debate over slavery in the new territories. Since the tensions were already high over slavery this event only sparked the war to occur even more.
Although Lincoln and the victorious Republicans had promised not to interfere with slavery in states where it already existed, they firmly opposed slavery 's spread to any federal territories. Between December 1860 and February 1861, the seven Deep South states seceded to avoid what they perceived as a long-term threat to their slaveholding interests. After Confederates fired on Fort Sumter in mid-April 1861, Lincoln 's call for 75,000 volunteers to suppress the rebellion prompted four slave states of the Upper South, including Virginia, to join their Deep South brethren. Four other slave states, typically called the Border States, remained loyal to the Union. The United States mustered at least 2.1 million men, about half of its 1860 military-age population.
Despite his avoidance of the issue slavery during the war, Republican radicals pressured Lincoln implemented the first Confiscation Act of 1861 in which slaves captured by the Union forces were not to be returned to the master since there was no contraband. With the second Confiscation Act of 1862, the slaves
The cause of the Civil War was extremely complex and multifaceted, and it was foreshadowed at the beginning of the establishment of the Confederation. From 1793 to 1860, countless contradictions occurred between the North and South, Finally, under the backlog of contradictions, the civil war broke out. The conflict between North and South has been risen since 19th century. The Northern states want the state 's newly develop in the west to become an anti slavery states, but the South wants the western states or even the whole country to support slavery. In the year of 1860, the anti-slavery president Abraham Lincoln was elected, the Southern states starts to rebel, and then the Southern Confederate side split themselves from the Union, the
The Civil is a war between two territories or more, the North and South in this case, were the two territories to fight for one goal. North wanted to abolish slavery, and the South wanted to keep it. War didn’t start from one man hitting another, in fact the war had a cause to it. The Southern people were worried about the North establishing a new nation. Meaning to vote for a new president.
