The men of Maugham played the role of being “dependent”, “passive” and “loyal” (Kuner 41), in comparison to women. Maugham’s men ascended towards passivity drag them to rest on the “mercy of Life Force” (Kuner 41). They appeared as unwilling to rebel, and wait for what the life has reserved for them. Mostly neglected by women yet remain loyal to preserve the social conventions. Maugham drew attractive but inconsiderate young men whose purpose is nothing else than to “pursuit women” (Kuner 41). In introduction of his short stories collections, he talked about the inspiration which urged him to write stories. He set a path for himself to write a story through the works of great story writers such as Chekhov, Maupassant. He set out a definition of a short story by deeply analyzing the works of Kipling and Edgar Allen Poe. His “reasoned discussion of the nature and practice of the short story” was the struggle to be a successful tale-teller of his age (Brander 97). James Cooper Lawrence worked on Poe’s philosophy of short story, developed a theory out of Poe’s definition which proves that in a story “coherence” works as an essential component to keep the readers captivated (qtd. in Brander 275). According to Poe a story must revolve around “a single incident”, containing the “unity of effect or impression” (qtd. in Brander 275). It seems Maugham is easy with definition of Poe for short story therefore his stories plots as the way as Poe …show more content…
Ah Khan contains a serious theme of colonization where people are “tearing up their roots” and ready to live on alien places. Maugham sounded like E.M Foster, who talks about “English hysteria,” in A Passage to India (Brander 117) furthermore he talked about people of East not only “uprooted but cut off” from their original soil now their western hysteria became viral. Ashenden, another stories collection mostly based on his adventurous incidents as a secret agent. He used first person narrator as an “attractive persona” (Brander 122) for him and carried first person narration from now on to the rest of his stories and wrote in this particular narration till his last collection Creatures of Circumstance. The stories in the last collection contributed to magazines and characters brilliantly varied and each character is “recognizable as real” (Brander 132). Maugham talked about one subject at times which harnesses the plot of whole story therefore his stories carry the unity of impression which let the reader with curiosity till the
-I will be concentrating on the different, even contradictory, ways people invoked the discourse of civilization to construct what it meant to be a man.” (p. 25) She argues that the specific aspects of discourse of civilizations are race, gender and power. The author uses different people to prove her thesis. She does this to illustrate different views of manhood in different times and also genders.
Not all works carry those story-like qualities, but are structured as more of literary analyses presented by fluid writing. Through all of the words and subjects he writes

Patriarchy presents the roles of men and women in a distinct form. Men are expected to be the dominant leader, strong, protector and sole provider where as women are subverted to the role of domestic duties, raring of children and fulfilling her man’s every desire without question or comment. In Lynn Nottage ’s play Poof! , she brilliantly portrays the roles of men and women, and experiments with the concept of changing gender roles that are characteristic of our society.
There are 6 things that Edgar Allen Poe thought as a requirement for writing short stories. 1. A short story should be long enough that you could read it in about 2 hours or less. 2: He believed that the aim of the story was the mood, the ambiance or effect. 3: Always start at the beginning of the story.
Three of the most important aspects of any story are the point of view, characterization and plot. In the short stories “Geraldine Moore the Poet,” “The Story-Teller,” and “Enemy Territory” this statement proves to be true. With a good analysis, all of these things can be found in the stories. Additionally, the point of view, characterization and plot can relate to the theme. The point of view needs to be scrutinized throughout the whole story.
The illustrations of these key literary elements are used in the best way possible to make a brilliant short
In this era of movies and stories we have better graphics and word choice to make the stories more scary. Unlike now they did not have this in 1963 and 1843. But still the people who made it feel like it was a modern day story was Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock. One way they created suspense was by using foreshadowing to give a hint of what's coming next. Another way they created suspense is by using different wording than we would use than modern talking slang/wording.
There is a distinguished balance in the relationship of women and men and it is visible in coexisting and procreating beyond themselves. In making decisions that are influenced by mistakes sometimes, one person gets the short end of the stick. In Hills Like White Elephants, the feminine role is displayed by a woman named Jig, whose feelings and thoughts get pushed aside to cater to the main male character’s wants and needs. In this case the “operation,” that cannot even be called by it’s true name or else the objective to persuade would not be met and ruin their lives. Masculine and feminine attributes have been visible in literature from the beginning of language, with the response of love and forcing one’s self to put aside: “me” for “you.”

Today, men and women have equal rights, but that does not mean life has always been simple for both genders. When Shakespeare writes A Midsummer Night’s Dream, there are roles, behaviors, and expectations for the dominant men and submissive women. This literature portrays the major changes in the lives of both sexes throughout the years, which shows the advances women gain with time. The gender issue of men being dominant and women being submissive used in the drama, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, shows the differences in the roles, behaviors, and expectations appropriate for each gender and is an example of an outdated stereotype.
Though Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories like, The Cask of Amontillado, to his poems like, The Raven, Poe’s shows his writing style to use physical imagery and connotative syntax to show ,imagery in his writing. Throughout his life, Poe had always lived through the most chaotic and evil of time. His parents died while he was 3 years old. After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy depicts the inner lives and hardships women in a patriarchal society face. Roy provides a reflection of the social injustice in India in the form of abusive and tyrannical males who abuse women - both physically and psychologically. The novel is a vehicle for the author to express her disillusionment with the postcolonial social conditions. This response will critically analyse the lives of the female characters in Roy’s novel, specifically Mammachi and Ammu and explore the ways they have been marginalised.
