Two essentials of humanity are authority and purpose. Without them a lonesome world of chaos would thrive, and society will thirst for stability and meaning. In Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the revered and high powered Wilbur Mercer and Buster Friendly serve the purpose of giving humanity meaning and maintaining stability in society, respectively.
Whether he exists or not, Mercer continues to give mankind meaning by providing company and hope. Everyone on Earth regards Mercerism as “the way you stop being alone” (Dick 62). Without it, they “[sense] the absence of life,” “feel hopeless about everything,” and experience the “absence of appropriate affect” by “not reacting” (5). However, not only is Mercerism necessary to fill the void in their lives, but they feel obligated to practice it.

Considered “the most important human being alive,” Friendly is very popular, and it is uncommon to be unfamiliar with him (Dick 65). For instance, it “seemed odd to [John Isidore] that [Pris Stratton] had never heard of Earth’s most knee-slapping TV comic”: Buster Friendly (60). Being greatly admired, most “watch [Friendly] every morning and then again at night when [they] get home” (60). They “naturally” turn on “Buster Friendly and His Friendly Friends” because it “[is telecasted and broadcasted] over all Earth via satellite” (4, 69). Believing everything he says, people think others are “mistaken” if Friendly “had never mentioned it” (136). Consequently, without Friendly the people would not have a direction for guidance and knowledge.
Representing meaning and stability in society, Mercer and Friendly are powerful characters in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Mercer provides ambition and purpose to humanity while Friendly provides a voice of authority and guidance. Without the two humanity would live meaningless lives in a world of
In life, a true friend is considered to be one of the most important things a person can have. Sometimes friends get in trouble, and when they do it’s your responsibility to help them. The soldier from Panos Ioannides’ story “Gregory” and Ronnie Quiller from Joseph Whitehill’s “The Day of the Last Rock Fight” both have friends that they constantly try to keep out of trouble. When in trouble, a friend will do everything in their power to assist you.
To achieve true peace and comfort, rather than trying to find love and comfort from others, an individual will search for someone who will give them a sense of belonging. This is seen through the novel, “the Catcher in the Rye” by J. D. Salinger where the persona, Holden, is seen searching for someone or a relationship. For example, the Holden tries to form many relationships including romantically, make friends, and with family members. Thus, to belong with a sense of peace and comfort, Holden attempts to interact with others.
In Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem, mankind is a philanthropic machine. The brotherhood nobly works together to achieve a common goal. In doing so, each man is asked to disregard his own personal means and goals. For every decision must be a collective thought and every advancement, a joint action. However, one man in this machine malfunctions.
Through the complex character of Mrs. Ross, Timothy Findley explores the selfless, and sometimes unconventional nature of responsibility, where individuals may attempt to isolate oneself from the burdens of responsibility but still feel obligated to affirm their roles through internalizing the welfare of others whilst depriving oneself if the duties are not fulfilled.
Similarly, Equality revolutionizes his sphere of philosophy. As he broadens his once narrow scope of the world and allows his imagination to wander, he realizes that the brotherhood is not as divine as it is praised to be. While devising the birth of his new society, he figures that because of the “worship [of the word “We”], the structure of centuries collapsed...whose every beam had come from the thought of some one man… [who] existed but for [his] own sake” (Rand 102). It is due to the endurance of collectivism that success is impeded and the “beams” that are supposed to support the monument of society instead “collaps[e]” under their own cause.
A novel, short story, and poem proves that conformity is the dull way to live life and keeping individuality may be hard, but is worth it. In M.T. Anderson’s novel Feed, it shows the readers that conforming takes away diversity and makes it easier for a government or powerful business to take over and dictate the world. In Kurt Vonnegut’s short story “Harrison
Every person has something to contribute to society, regardless of age, sex or culture. The measurement of a person’s worth is determined by more than simply following rules and going through the motions. Accordingly, the combined contribution to society is more than the sum of each person. However, in The Chrysalids, by John Wyndham, the people of Waknuk live a life governed by strict social norms, which limits their expression of individuality. This pervasive attitude results in a narrow-minded perspective on what it means to be human.
Friendship has many different impacts on many characters in different ways depending on its presence or absence. Although friendship’s presence and absence are complete opposites, they
Throughout history, humans have greatly evolved as a species. Despite many physical changes, the inherently good nature of humankind and its tendency towards kindness has prevailed. The constant craving for both physical and emotional connections as well as the comfort humans find in each other are demonstrative of humankind’s true values. Humanity’s natural inclination toward bettering situations is demonstrative of the inherently good nature of humankind, that allows for societal advancements. In Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch, the protagonist Theo Decker experiences many hardships that cause him to make questionable decisions.
In Richard Connell’s story he supports the idea that the world is made up of two kinds of people(hunters and huntees). Leaders and Followers seems to fit better. Some people enjoy being leaders and others enjoy being followers. In this day in age most people are just followers and their okay with that.
Hobbesian Theory in Lord of the Flies The question of whether man is inherently good or evil has been debated amongst religions, philosophers, and many great thinkers since the beginning of man itself. On one hand, there are those who believe we as humans are naturally moral beings, and it is society that makes us evil. However, others argue society is not only good, but needed to control our inhumane and animalistic tendencies. One of the most famous believers in this theory is English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes.
It conveys the message that the common goal of a society will eventually be achieved if every one of us in the society adheres to a certain standard. But the fact is, not everyone will submit himself/herself to a communal cause. And it is apparent that Fuller’s ideological mindset somewhat inherits
There are many factors that determine how people behave in their daily lives. We are run by a number of rules and regulations that influence the way we behave, talk and live. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding shows that without the influence of a civilized society and law and order, people’s characteristics can change drastically. Similarly in Macbeth, Shakespeare represents the loss of morality of a leader as his hunger for power clouds his judgement. Both pieces of literature present how both writers view the breakdown of morality through the breakdown of civil behaviour.
