In “The Palace Thief,” by Ethan Cain, Cain conducted a thesis of morals versus pragmatic. By having his main character as the narrator, Cain introduces a character called Hundert, a history teacher who claims he wanted to teach good virtues to his pupils so that they could become great leaders. However, this was then challenged by one student, Sedgewick Bell. The relationship between Hundert and Sedgewick challenged Hundert’s convictions and principles. Cain develops a central idea that morals and virtues are irrelevant to gaining power.
A palace is the home of royalty, or very prestigious people. In terms of the “Palace Thief”, Hundert’s palace was St. Benedict’s because it contained the two things that were important to him, his position, or job, and his subjects, or students. Hundert was very passionate about his job as a history teacher. He not only taught the lives of many historical figures of the past, but he ”battled [his students’] indolence with discipline, their boorishness with philosophy, and their arrogance with the history of great men before them”(155). Hundert’s goal as a teacher was not only to teach history but teach to his students morals and principles as well.

“ And I see that you have not changed either,” spoken by Sedgewick Bell reveals the central idea of “The Palace Thief,” a short story written by Ethan Canin. Hundert, the main character and narrator, is a teacher at St. Benedicts School who narrates his encounters with Sedgewick Bell, the son of a formidable Virginian senator. The story is narrated after Hundert’s experiences during the second competition. Hundert’s character is greatly reflected in both of the “Mr. Julius Caesar” competitions. Possibly the most prominent and important theme is that because of Hundert’s conflicting motivations and interactions with Sedgewick and the other students he does not change throughout the short story.
As is usual in such cases, she was the apple of his eye, and was loved by him above all humanity (Stockton282)’’. This quote explains that the wild and self-important nature that the princess possesses, passionate and self-important, selfish, single-minded. This states that she would not allow another woman to possess her lover.
“The Palace Thief” by Ethan Canin delves into the mind of Hundert, a history teacher at a prestigious private school. As a teacher of children who come from wealthy families and are likely to be future patricians, he is well aware of the impact they may have on the world in their adulthood. However, Hundert's ideas and beliefs of leaving an impact on his students consume his life leaving him unable to grasp the present and the harsh reality until late in his life. Hundert is stuck on the idea of making an impact on history and the minds of his students, even in the very beginning of his career, as shown with his interaction with Senator Bell, A student named Sedgewick's father. In response to Hundert saying “it is his job to mold his students”,
