The metaphorical term "Rain check" was first used by baseball fans when a game was rained out, then those who had a ticket for that game were given a "rain check" which could be redeemed in future at another game. While the term was originally coined when the baseball game was canceled due to rain, the metaphorical term started to be used for other types of performances such as if they canceled it for other kinds of reasons other than rain.
