The Mexican-American war is to be partially blamed for the civil war for a big reason, slavery. Slavery during the American-Mexican war was very problematic concerning the North and the South. There were problems between the NOrth and South concerning if slavery should be allowed or not, the North wanted slaves to be free but the south did not. The south benefitted from the slaves because in the south cotton fields and factories were more common and they would be handled by the slaves. The slave owners also referred to as masters, would say how labor work was only for slaves and doing their work would make the masters stoop down to the slaves level. What divided the North and South more was the Fugitive Slave Act which denied a trial to fugitives.
In the Mexican-American war of 1846 the United States of America was justified in going to war with Mexico because of many reasons. First Texas decided that did not want to part of Mexico they wanted to be part the Union (United States). It was America’s Manifest Destiny to go out and conquer the land, and the Mexican government wasn’t stable enough to handle their lands. “Texas had determined…to annex herself to our Union” because of the increasing numbers of American settlers that filled the northern part of the Rio Grande. This led Texans to successfully go for an annexation causing a war between the United States and Mexico.
The civil war began in the year of 1861, many historians have established theories for the main cause. Four of the possible theories include, morality and views on slavery, two societies, failure to compromise, states rights and Lincoln's election. Although all of these play a big role in the causes of the civil war, I believe the principle cause of the civil war was, the existence of two societies in the United States beacuse the South wanted to become more independent, had multiple uprisings due to slavery, and had differnt oppions on slavery. America was split into the North and the South, both very diverse. Some might say that the North was very independent and the south was very dependent on the north.
The opening shots of the Mexican War were the opening shots to the Civil War because it allowed and lead to many heated debates between Northerners and Southerners demanding their wants and not the others. Northerners and Southerners had heated debates and express their different views on American expansionism, both sides stating how they believed it would be beneficial to the future of the country and then how it would become a disadvantage. It first started with the idea of conquering smaller territories in order to keep expanding westward. Those who were in support of expansionism believed that moving westward would eventually fix the problem of overpopulation and even create more economic opportunities.
“Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!” (Norris 123). Years before the war, the United States and Spain were at peace with one another until April 1898. President Mckinley was pressured into retaliation caused from the sinking of the battleship Maine and words from the press.
Mexican-American war is the war between the United States and Mexico that began in 1846 and ended in 1848. The United States and Mexico disagreed over the border between the countries. President John Tyler and James k. Polk wanted Mexican territory that was blocking US expansion West in pursuance of Manifest Destiny. Before 1836, Texas was originally the northern part of Mexico which used to be called the Republic of Texas. In 1845, Texas became the 28th state of the United States.
The Mexican-American War marked an enormous symbolic impact for both nations which changed people’s lives. There’s many similarities and differences between these two countries, the combat that began during 1846 between Mexicans and Americans has brought catastrophe and teared many families apart. The war commenced because Mexico claimed the Nueces River and its northeastern boarder while Americans demanded the Rio Grande River. Overall they had problems with land property, Mexico started the battle first and launch fire on April 25, 1846. This is when all the problems and fight’s begin and how Mexican’s and American’s became great enemies that can’t stand each other.
The video The Mexican-American War was interesting to watch. I understand that any country would like to extend its territories, but I think President Polk should not have gone to the extreme of war. I really like how in the video, the U.S. was portrayed as a bully, who technically forced Mexico to give up its territory, something that was, in my opinion, not fair at all. Besides this, I absolutely agreed with the idea of none of the countries winning due to the amount of casualties. It is true that the U.S. “won” the war and got the territory it wanted, but at what cost though?
The big debate across the growing United States was the debate of slavery and which states would come in as free or slavery states. The Mexican-American War was a major turning point in this debate because it settled the debate over which states would become free or slavery states. This war lasted a little over a year and 9 months long on the border of the United States and Mexico (Texas and Mexico City). This war would helped settle many disputes, but the main debate it would settle would be the huge slavery debate. The Mexican-American War helped the United States gain new territory is the south-western part of the United States.
Civil Disobedience Henry David Thoreau was a philosopher, journalist, and most known as poet. He was born on July 12, 1817, in Concord, Massachusetts. He started writing nature poetry in the 1840’s. In 1845 he wrote Walden during his two year stay at Walden Pond.
The war also contributed to North-South hostilities that led to the Civil War. Said Ulysses S. Grant, The Southern Rebellion was largely the outgrowth of the Mexican War. Nations like individuals, are punished for their transgressions. We got our in the most sanguinary and expensive war of modern times. Punishment.
There were three main causes of the civil war including slavery, sectionalism and secession. Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states. (Mrs. Wise) "The south feared the declaration of freedom for the slaves by government leaders in the North." Next, sectionalism. Sectionalism-
The Mexican-American War changed the Unites States of America in a monumental way. This war changed The U.S.A.’s relationship with foreign powers and the economic standpoint of the nation. The Mexican- American war, and its strong ties to manifest destiny, shaped the nation in a country bordered by two seas with a chance for common folk and foreigners to have a sustainable life due to the gold rush. The war can also be accounted for the downfall leading to the Civil War over the conflict of slavery due to the land purchased in the wars treaty. Conflict between Mexico and the United States began when Texas, previously part of Mexico, became part of the United States.
The Civil War was a monumental bloodshed, which was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States, from 1861 to 1865. The primary cause of the war was the Southern states' desire to preserve the institution of slavery, which did not please the beliefs of the North. At the beginning of the Civil War, twenty-two million people lived in the North and 9 million people, which included four million of whom were slaves, lived in the South. The North, led by President Abraham Lincoln and his trusted generals, had more money, more factories, more horses, more railroads, and more food than the south. These advantages made the United States much more powerful than the Confederate States, which ultimately led to Northern victory.
The United States war with Mexico continues to be a divisive topic among many people because of its background. The Mexican-American war was a fight between Mexico and America for land. America’s belief at the time was Manifest Destiny, which meant that they believed that America should extend from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific ocean. In the end, America benefited from the war and got the land. The United States expanded its size, achieving their dream of Manifest Destiny.
To a greater extent, slavery was the greatest cause of the outbreak of the civil war in 1860. Disputes of slavery caused economic and political troubles between the northern and southern states leading up to the civil war. The fact the the northern and southern states were different in almost every way caused them to turn out like completely different territories, one of their greatest differences was the fact that most southern states economy relied on hard labour, agricultural jobs like tobacco in Maryland, and cotton in Virginia; this caused their economy to be more based on the labour of slaves than the more developed territories in the north (Harrold), who after this time was starting to not need the slave labour in their territories because after early 1800’s, the industrial revolution had been spreading to America, and the country developed very quickly. But in this expansion, only the north states were getting the effect of the industrial revolution, meaning the north would not need slave
