Intro Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. It is usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 11 percent of children aged 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD at some point in their lives. Experts caution the rate in adults may be higher, but many adults remain undiagnosed. ADHD cannot be cured but can be managed. The most effective way to manage ADHD is with stimulant medications and many other alternatives. I will …show more content…
The MTA is funded by the National Institute for Mental Health. According to the MTA study children with ADHD had responded favorably to 35 very extensive sessions of multimodal treatment. The sessions included medication, parent training, a full-time summer treatment program that taught social, sports … and academic skills. Daily report cards are also a good system, because they get rewards for achieved goals or good behavior. (MTA 1999). The treatments children with ADHD receive are highly effective in reducing the major symptoms. Parents are the children’s first teachers so they need to be the closest they can to experts on ADHD. Better outcomes for youngsters with ADHD are achieved when parents, teachers, and medical and mental health providers collaborate …show more content…
Scientific evidence strongly supports the effectiveness of stimulant in managing the symptoms of ADHD, they are recommended as the first choice of medications used in treating children with ADHD. The two main types of stimulants are the methylphenidate formulas and the amphetamine formulas. Stimulants increase (or stimulate) the production of neurotransmitters, to a normalized level (Rief 39). The brand name for methylphenidate is Ritalin and the brand name for Amphetamine stimulants are Dexedrine and Adderall. These two main types of stimulants have been proven to work very favorably for treating children. Theses stimulants help children academically at school, and adults to perform better at work. The medication typically is giving at a low dosage and raising it gradually. Some individual require adjusting not just the dosage but the medication several times. Some stimulant medications take effect very quickly within thirty minutes. Many individuals don’t really want to take medication, but would not function right without them. People with ADHD have to outweigh the side effects of the medications with the benefits. Thousands of children have been involved in research evaluating their use in the treatment of
In Mollers case the Ritalin was available to him and when he weighed out his options he really didn 't have too much too lose. When Moller was a student, he saw “the negative of doing poorly on the test was far greater than the negative of getting caught, discounted by the anesthetic of low probability”. Not only were the side effects small but the author also didn 't see what he was doing as a problem because, “I was much more worried about the scholastic consequences of I were discovered abusing a
I believe that my ADHD creates challenges in my job such as getting off track, not always finishing everything assigned to me, and the tendency to talk with my coworkers instead of doing my job. Despite the challenges I face in the work environment, I have to give myself reminders on what I am supposed to be doing and try to make more of an effort to get my job done. In addition to the obstacles I face in the work environment, ADHD provides additional obstacles in the relationships that I have with my family and friends. I do not share the fact that I have ADHD with my friends and that I need to take medicine just to feel and operate normal, so I occasionally feel alone or bad about my schoolwork knowing that I have to work harder for the grades I receive. Similarly, issues arise within my family because my parents have the tendency to get upset when I forget to finish my chores, or my desk is a mess and unorganized.
d-Amphetamine: A CNS (central nervous system) psychomotor stimulant used for treating ADHD and narcolepsy (sleep disorder that causes abnormal sleepiness). As a performance-enhancer, it improves brain concentration, memory, and physical stamina and some behavioural emergencies as mania and toxic delirium. Chlorpromazine: First-generation antipsychotic drugs that are therapeutically used for treating schizophrenia, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
Another anonymous person with ADHD tells how he gave his friends the pills just because he didn’t really want to charge them for anything that he was not even taking he himself. Martha Farah from Pennsylvania who has studied the use of the drugs “Retaline” and “Adderall” expresses that the drugs have serious side
Both drugs are stimulants so they stimulate the individual and create an euphoric high, as a result of the way both drugs elevate the dopamine levels in the brain. Stimulants such as cocaine and meth cause the user to be more active, talkative, alert, less tired, exhilarated, etc. This essay will talk about each drug signs and symptoms treatment nursing management for drug abuse. Cocaine is an extremely addictive and poisonous drug and is a central nervous system stimulant (Miller-Keane).
The diagnosis of ADHD takes place after the child’s evaluation and can be given by health care providers. 1. The diagnosis for ADHD involves seven steps. a. The child’s parents have the child seen by a Pediatrician. b.
Adderall is a prescription medication that is given to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. Parents tend to think their kid has a problem from moving around a lot, playing when their parents want them to sit or acting up in school, such as choosing to not listen to directions when given, talking too much or playing in line. There’s a slight difference in
According to the 2013 National College Health Assessment study, almost half of students surveyed stated they felt overwhelmed with anxiety in the last year (Novotney, 2014). These numbers continue to rise among high school students and college students around the country. It’s no question why the percentage of Adderall use among college students is also rising. Adderall is a drug commonly prescribed to treat ADHD and its symptoms; however, its use among students without the ailment is rising. The drug heightens students’ motivation, focus, and concentration (Student Health, 2016).
It is important to consider the potential risks and benefits of medication in preschoolers and to use it cautiously in this age group. While medication can be effective in treating the symptoms of ADD/ADHD, it should be used in combination with other treatment options, such as behavioral therapy. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of medication on patients with ADD/ADHD. By working together, patients, doctors, and pharmaceutical companies can ensure that medication is prescribed responsibly and that the needs of patients with ADD/ADHD are met in a safe and effective
Students in high school are expected to develop and display critical thinking, reading, writing, and communication abilities, as well as take ownership of their academic growth. Even if students struggle with ADHD, they are still accountable for time management, completing assignments on time, attending class, and asking for assistance when necessary. Thirdly, ELA in particular requires focus, attention to detail, and critical thinking skills that are important to success in school as well as work. Therefore, ADHD cannot be used as an excuse.
Adderall is a combination of amphetamine and dextrose-amphetamine. It works by balancing certain natural substances in the brain. Today I’m going to discuss about the side effects of Adderall, the way it impacts students, and most importantly the learning of students in
In interest of better understanding the disease, and to allow more precise and effective treatments,, along with these comorbidity studies, various etiological studies have been able to show that neurotransmitter dysfunction is the primary cause in ADHD symptoms [3]. This understanding allowed specific targeting of the disorder through stimulant agents and its high efficacy led to it being the primary pharmacotherapy for ADHD. However, just like all drugs, stimulants are known to have side effects. Furthermore, stimulants are highly abusable. It is therefore extremely important to understand not only the safety and efficacy of ADHD pharmacotherapy but also other available treatments that can be used in place or in addition to pharmacotherapy to allow the best and most
According to Laura M. Garnier-Dykstra, students “use prescription stimulants non medically
Children with ADHD Attention Psychiatric Association says that up to 11% of children in the U.S have been diagnosed with ADHD. This is a concerning percentage considering the possibility for misdiagnosis. Many children have been misdiagnosed with ADHD due to parents being overwhelmed by their high energy children, Schools not questioning a misdiagnosis because they get more funding for a child with a mental handicap, and because doctors choose the easy way out when treating a child with high energy. The first reason why children are being misdiagnosed for ADHD because parents are being overwhelmed by their high energy children.
To me, ADHD is one of those disorder that you can tell a person has just by having a 5 minute conversation with him or her upon first meeting. When I worked as an undergraduate in the university’s library, there was this guy who would always be on the floor that I was assigned. He was a doctoral student in history and was very nice. However, when speaking with him, sometimes he would cut himself off or jump to another subject. Eventually, he told me that he was diagnosed with ADD.
