For example, in the first few paragraphs, we get a hint of how Connie’s mother is constantly nagging and complaining about how vain she is and how she is nothing like her sister. Speaking from a logical standpoint we can say that this negative backlash from her mother is upsetting to her, as it should be for any normal human being. Since she is receiving such negative attention in her home she goes out to seek “positive” attention. Her mother’s continuous praising of how great Connie’s sister June is, and how much better she is than her can be draining and irritating. Connie could just be going out to get the praise and attention that she needs or “deserves”.

Throughout the story Franny 's comments on how a person has to act a certain way because of the social standards that are set. She spends her time in the story abiding by the standers and commenting on them causing her to have an emotional breakdown. Hedda Gabler: The Misunderstood Evil Damsel In Hedda Gabler, Henrik Ibsen tells the story of a woman who seems to be confined to the norms of her society and time. Hedda, the newlywed bride of George Tesman, finds herself struggling in the new marriage, surrounded by overbearing family members, and a persistent old lover. Hedda’s stressful situation introduces a new side of Hedda that the other characters in the play are not aware of. Ibsen portrays Hedda negatively through her short dialogues with the other characters and her thoughts, however, the degree of which her actions are wrong can be measured by understanding her circumstances. Ibsen portrays Hedda’s negative behavior through her abrupt conversations with others and her own thoughts.
In the beginning of the story Georgiana is characterized as being a foolish young girl that is extremely weak. She is dependent on other people's judgment and when her husband hates her birthmark that everyone thought made her so beautiful she asks him, “Then why did you take me from my mother's side? You cannot love what shocks you!”(page 1, paragraph 6). She was dependent on her mother to tell her what to do constantly and how she told her she was so beautiful, therefore, when she had a change in scenery it was confusing to her. After being told multiple times a day that he could not stand to look at her she figures out that when she compliments him she receives compliments in return.
Stella is demonstrated to live her life consumed with illusion until the final scene of the play where, as Blanche is taken away and loses her mental stability, Stella realises the problems that she may have caused by not defending Blanche from Stanley, as she is blinded by her own illusions of her relationship Stanley. Stella lives in denial of her abusive relationship with Stanley by creating excuses and illusions that everything is fine. This is evidenced when Stella says “You’re making too much fuss”, therefore it is obvious that Stella is used to the abuse she receives from Stanley and shows to Blanche that it is a regular thing that would happen to women in New Orleans, however she creates the illusion that it is okay or that it does not happen, as she dismisses giving any information on it. When Maupassant conveys Madame Loisel’s dream he said “She dreamed of great drawing rooms dressed with old silk” The premodifier “great” once again refers to the theme greed which is shown throughout the story. These days modern life has thrown countless examples of women struggling for their identities and thus emerging in the same way as Nora did. Ibsen though in his own ways, is probably the playwright to bring this change noticeable in their respective plays. Ibsen showed a woman who left her husband simply on the grounds that he had treated her as a doll and not as a responsible human being. Nora is depicted until the end of the play as the helpless, mindless fool who wastes her husband’s hard earned money.
Nelly tells us that Catherine is "never so happy as when we were all scolding her at once," (Ch 5, pg 35) a quote which indicates Catherine's desire to be the center of attention. Even more surprising is the scene where Heathcliff erupts in anger over Catherine's preferential treatment of the Lintons, and Catherine scolds Nelly, saying "you've combed my hair quite out of curl," (Ch 8, pg 58) interrupting her conversation with Heathcliff and making us wonder if she's more worried about her childhood friend or her beautiful hair. This sort of self absorption is not observable in Heathcliff. When Nelly tells Heathcliff that she thinks he might envy Catherine, Nelly reports that Heathcliff finds the notion of envying Catherine "incomprehensible".
