American students are falling behind students in countries who have shorter summers because of year-round education. In a recent study of 34 countries, done by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, 15-year-old Americans were positioned 14th in reading, 17th in science, and 25th in math (Granderson). American students are falling behind in their studies in comparison to other countries. Higher test scores from year-round schooling will benefit not only the students but the economy. The U.S. could potentially “gain $41 over the lifetime of the generation born in 2010” if in the next 20 years if students improve their score in reading, math, and science by 25 points.
Across the United States lies 37,100 high schools; each school comes in their own shapes and sizes. Educators recently looked into whether or not lowering school size could help better these students. Results found that small high schools contain less violence incidents. Moreover, small high schools result in a wider array of student involvement. Nonetheless, small high schools offer only a limited amount of courses and extracurriculars that students can get involved in.
Recently, the Common Core State Standards were developed and kids were going to be tested more than ever. However, all of this education reform has been a failure because our testing scores have not improved, the testing makes children suffer, and it doesn’t improve how teachers teach. While this is a positive feature for students ideologically, it has not translated to production practically in class, as “students who use social media while studying scored 20% lower on tests” (84). On the condition that social media is used in moderation, it presents tools to discuss in class topics and the ability to learn outside of school; however, the overuse of these sites during studying has caused an extreme lack of production. Obviously, students are abusing the features of social media, which is leading to disappointing results in the education
A quote from the Achieve 3000 article “Bright and Early...or Not?” states that, “Starting later isn 't the cure for all teen health and academic problems, the AAP said. But it can improve students ' lives in many ways.” In short this shows how later start times will help adolescents in the classroom. The young adults will be more attentive and it will improve their grades. This will benefit the schools as well because the kids will do better on standardized tests and it will improve the schools academic rating.
Why Teachers Should Limit Homework “The number one reason kids over the age by eight stops reading for pleasure is, because of too much homework.” Kids today have way too much homework, for them to read in their spare time or just for fun. It is taken away by the amount of homework teachers give out. Teachers sometimes don’t even realize that they are assigning too much homework and that students have homework in other classes. Children go to school for eight hours a day and their brain starts to shut down, causing health complications, too much homework can affect test scores, and students have outside school events, sports, jobs, church, and family to worry about.

Kids should have less written homework and more study time so they will get better grades. A major reason why kids grades are decreasing is caused by the amount of written homework we get. Did you know that one out of four kids fail test when they have lots of written homework on a test nights. According to Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, data has proven that in countries where more time is spent on homework, students score in tests lowering rapidly.
Technology has become an important factor in learning, but inner city schools cannot afford new technology equipment. With older school buildings comes the question of safety. Schools should provide a safe and positive place for children to attend. About half of inner city schools need repairs and modernization. These renovations would cost a whopping 197 billion dollars.
Improving the Achievement of Hispanic Students Summary In today’s American school systems, Hispanics are among the most at-risk in the student population. They are less likely to finish high school and even fewer go on to enroll in college, let alone graduate from a higher education program. The number of Hispanic students is constantly growing, especially in urban schools, and most of those schools are desperately trying to create programs and systems to help accommodate the large number of English language learners.
Standardized Tests: Right or Wrong? Diane Ravitch, a historian of education, once said that, “sometimes the most brilliant and intelligent students do not shine in standardized tests because they do not have standardized minds.” These tests have been a part of American education since the mid-1800s(Is the Use), but now, many people are starting to realize that standardized tests are not as convenient as they thought they were. In 2002, the No Child Left Behind Act required all schools in the United States to test students in grades two through twelve annually in reading, math, and science(Is the Use). But since then, the U.S. has dropped from 18th in the world in mathematics to 36th, with a similar change in science as well.
Often, a student is not given a chance to correct their grade or make up missing work. When grades are low, it is most likely because of a small error, work that isn’t turned in, or they forgot to answer a question. Adjusting retakes for all major grades would help lift grades and increase graduation rates in schools across America by a small amount.
The tests narrow down the curriculum to focus on the subjects that are on the test, forgetting about the other subjects. If their class performs well, the teacher is deemed to be a "good" teacher ; if their class does not perform so well than the teacher is often labeled "unfit" .
