Censorship is defined as the suppression of free speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorised or other group or institutions. Freedom of speech is the right of people to express their opinions publicly without governmental interference, subject to the laws against libel incitement to violence or rebellion. Censorship has been around from the 17th and 18th century. In BC 443 people were able to communicate their thoughts freely, this was the period of enlightenment. Censorship gave every citizen the freedom of writing and printing freely. In Europe, Ancient Monarchs saw freedom of expression as a threat to their crown, so they constrained Christians who spoke out against them by placing restrictions on their materials as well as they were hindered from preaching the word of God. Censorship has led more people in accepting freedom of expression and reasoning.
The need for censorship became inevitable because of the rapid development of technology. With technology people are able to express themselves whenever, wherever and about anything or everything. As a result, the 21st century saw more control and sanctions being placed on ways people communicate, and what exactly they should say or do in public spaces.
