With online college students being introduced to technology in the school system, many try to take the easy way out by cheating. Cheating in online environments can include looking up answers during a test, plagiarism, or any form of using another 's work without proper credit. Faculty in the school system are doing everything possible to decrease the frequency of cheating, because it has negative effects on both the students and staff.
According to “Why we cheat” by Ferric .C Fang and Arturo Casadevall, it is explained that “Humans are surprisingly quick to cheat.”( Ferric .C Fang, Arturo Casadevall 34) when given a motive to cheat many students do so. In a study done by Dan Ariely students were told if they completed a set of math problems they would get a cash reward.(Fang) It was not surprising to see that cheating occurred. To the test subjects, it was reasonable to cheat in order to win the money even though the cash was not earned. Surely every human has been dishonest at one time in their life seeking an advantage in their lives. The author concludes that we as humans cheat for our own selfish benefit.
Fang and Casadevall also suggested “fear of

It is important to understand how students cheat in order to combat it. Different problems arise with the different forms of cheating. Faculty members who teach online course struggle with verifying the student’s identity.(Jennings) Because the teacher is not physically there to watch the student another person could be taking the class for them. While taking an exam online a mobile device could be used without repercussion because the student could not be seen. In conclusion, Jennings says students in online classes are more likely to cheat because there is no face to face
A few of Ariely’s self-conducted experiments are described to show how most of the people who cheat only cheat a little. One of the experiments was done in the kitchen of college dorm rooms; a can of coke and a dollar bill were placed on the counter, people took the cokes but not the money, because that would have felt more like stealing. Module Three Rough Draft One of the most common problems in our schooling system is that students cheat. This happens a lot with older students who struggle with the topic that their assignment is on. In “The Shadow Scholar” by Ed Dante, and “Introduction: Fraud and Fundamental Misunderstandings” by Shane Borrowman shows how students cheat to move on in their education. In both of these texts the authors tell their first-hand stories of their different students cheating.
In the article “Studies Find More Students Cheating, With High Achievers No Exception,” Richard Pérez-Peña explains the increase in cheating among high achieving students and how they are being enabled. Initially, Pérez-Peña suggests that new technology has made cheating easier by allowing the student to obtain the answers at a click of a button. Technology allows students to instantly connect to the internet and other students to communicate answers (Pérez-Peña 1). This indicates that it is unchallenging for students to use technology to secure an ample grade. Furthermore, in disregards to ethics, parents have become enablers to students cheating in recent years.
The nature of cheating originates from the common misconception of helping others and a student’s lack of self-confidence. Plagiarism, not so different from cheating, disperses from the broad range of information on today’s technology. Through an authentic study, it has been revealed that teachers have established many students who have cheated their way through complexed assignments. Even misleading students who have kept a high grade point average has been found as participants of academic dishonesty. Today, professors seek to find different measures that should be taken to decrease cheating and plagiarism.
Cheating over the internet is nothing new to the youth of the world right now, and it is said by Perez to be “...enabling students to connect instantly with answers, friends to consult and works to plagiarize” (para. 6). This type of behavior is seen in many different ways and on many different platforms. Texting, for example, is one of the most widely used types of communication, and through this, cheating is just becoming easier. A recent study done by Jeffrey A. Roberts and David M. Wasieleski shows “...that the more online tools college students were allowed to to complete an assignment, the more likely they were to copy the work of others. It seems like this cheating problem is just in our younger society, but this reaches out into college level classes and into the real world.
With consistent discussions and reminders of the consequences of cheating, it would become clearer to students both the repercussions of academic dishonesty, but also set an important social precedent around cheating. Additionally, it has been observed at school with honor codes that as more people in a school are honest, an honor code will amplify these positive traits and create a feedback loop where the expectation of being caught is higher and students are less likely to cheat (Source
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, cheating amongst university students was on the rise; therefore, universities decided to implement methods to help ensure students were completing their work with integrity. Methods include punishing students who use unauthorized online resources, like Google and Quizlet, and utilizing exam proctoring software. Unfortunately, these methods do not easily accommodate the needs of each student, so a student could be flagged as cheating for something out of their control. Regardless, Ignatowski believes that universities should be prioritizing their students because these methods are going to cause detrimental damage to the rapport between students and faculty.
Professor Doom is able to show how a students “no big deal” mindset behind cheating can lead to a detrimental effect of the school perceptions being changed and a hardworking student’s degree virtually meaning nothing but a sheet of paper. The trends of students participating in cheating is growing on college campuses and isn 't coming to a downward slope anytime soon. It is mentioned by Doom that
They cheat because they see others cheat and they think they will be unfairly disadvantaged. The cheaters are getting 100 on the exam, while the non-cheaters may only get 90's (David L Jaffe).” I Trevor Patrick Murphy do promise Professor McCann that I will not cheat in college. I fully understand what cheating is and the consequences that carry with it. I will only turn in my
High school and College students’ ethics have elevated over the years and has only increased. Cheating has been a tremendous epidemic for a long period of time and recently skyrocketed because of the creation of smartphones and electronics. Students who are academically dishonest are usually in honors and advanced placement classes because they are challenged and learning a more rigorous curriculum than the other students who are in college prep courses. The reason for their actions is because of academic stress students receive on a daily basis to obtain admirable grades, so they can go to a well-known college.
Summary of “Academic Integrity” by Arden Miller and Adena D. Young-Jones Which one do you believe cheats more in schools, an online course or a face to face course? Arden Miller and Adena Young-Jones did an article over which one tended to be worse when they found results that were kind of shocking. Of course you expect an online course to cheat more but that was not the case. The results really varied on who the person was, sexuality, age, and other personalities of a person. Arden and Adena, both took surveys of “639 students in both types of classes.
I remember some classmates, cheating back in high school. Throughout my entire educational career, I have experienced meeting a lot of cheaters. Plagiarism is considered a form of cheating. The punishment has changed from a zero grade to expulsion. A lot of students who cheat, are only fooling themselves.
Eight but of every ten students admit to engaging some form of cheating in their collegiate courses (Gabriel, 2010, McCabe, Butterfield + Trevino, 2006). This means that students have cheated on either homework, quizzes or tests so that they can get the grade they want. By doing this, they are only hurting themselves because by cheating, their not learning anything. Researchers have found that academic dishonesty was associated with a student’s lower ratings of satisfaction with their familial relationships (Madill, Gaia, Qualls 2007). This means that it is more likely a student will cheat because of family issues at home.
Study shows that one reason why students cheat is because they feel as if they almost have to because of their peers. In their article, “Source Is Important When Developing A Social Norms Campaign to Combat Academic Dishonesty”, Jennifer N. Engler and Joshua D. Landau maintains that “By this account, students cheat because they believe that their peers
We are taught the difference between the right and wrong since our childhood but are always told that the lying and cheating always makes things difficult but when students go to school and college they are faced with different dilemma as then the cheating seems to be the easier way to get good grades. They do not really see cheating as the wrong way of doing things they see it as an easy way of doing things .They do not even consider it as an unethical thing because they have been taught that to do the right thing is the easy way .They are taught that the right path and the ethical path is always the easy one but in reality that is not true. The ethical and right path is difficult and complex as J.K.Rowling has said, “Sometimes we must choose between what is right and what is easy.”
