Introduction Sexually Explicit Material As more and more advancements in technology and media come about in American society and societies around the world, people have begun incorporating these platforms in their daily lives (Cooper, 1998). It’s no surprise that in American society, individuals take part in interacting with sexually explicit material (SEM). This use of SEM, otherwise known as pornography, is beginning to become more accessible and incorporated into the individual lives of emerging adults and their relationships (Carrol, Padilla-Walker, Nelson, Olson, Barry, & Madsen, 2008). As the accessibility and use of pornography increases among the younger adult population, researchers have been trying to better understand the impact …show more content…
As more and more research was devoted to this sensitive topic, the researchers began constructing their studies with a confirmatory approach, seeking out evidence of a negative effect on the variables of relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction (Kohut, Fisher, & Campbell, 2016). Relationship Satisfaction SEM usage, whether we know about it or not, plays a role in most modern-day relationships. In a 2011 study, researchers reported that 72% of their male participants and 56% of female participants admitted to their use of SEM (Bridges & Morokoff). In past studies where relationship satisfaction is the focus of the researchers, one of the variables associated to the measure of satisfaction in the relationship is relationship adjustment. It was reported by researchers that in a heterosexual relationship, the husband’s SEM use negatively impacted their relationship adjustment (Muusses, Kerkhof, & Finkenauer, 2013). though most literature has touched on some important factors regarding relationship satisfaction, the results are still non-conclusive (Willoughby, Carroll, Busby, & Brown, 2015). Meet the Internet, the Most Profound Mood Altering Drug Yet What if the internet came with a warning label which read: ‘Caution: frequent use may cause cognitive decline, depression and addiction’, would you still use it? Consider that the internet has replaced caffeine as our most commonly used mood altering substance, and it’s an addictive one too. The idea that our brain can be reshaped by the internet was first thoroughly explored by Pulitzer prize finalist author, Nicholas Carr in his thought provoking book, The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains.
Nicholas Carr’s book, The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains explains the ups, but mostly downs of the Internet and how it affects our thoughts and actions. The Internet has caused people to become less concentrated, as well as more “hungry” for more information. Carr makes it very clear that he has experienced these common side effects ever since he started using the Internet, and so have I. This is an important and pressing issue that
However, Nicholas Carr shares his testimony of how internet usage has eroded people’s capacity to concentrate and contemplate effectively. Johnson impressively conveys his perspective in an efficient and clever manner to his audience. Carr, on the other hand, achieves an extraordinary balance of perspective, strategy, and evidence that he develops throughout his article which becomes a vacuum of interest to curious readers. However, in the end, Johnson fails to effectively weave and develop his opinions with effective evidence in a way that does not cause a repulsive impulse with his blatant
It has previously been suggested that women are more bothered by emotional infidelity while men are more bothered by sexual infidelity. This study examined these previous suggestions and found congruent results. Men and women were asked to compare the levels of distress they would undergo if their partner had passionate intercourse with someone else or if their partner developed a deep attachment to someone else. Men claimed they would undergo more distress if their partner participated in passionate intercourse with someone else than if they developed a deep connection with someone else. Women claimed they would undergo more distress if their partner underwent a deep connection with someone else as opposed to passionate intercourse.
In teens, knowing the sex life of peers around you is exciting. The problem lies in how we overexaggerate the sex lives of others. A friend could say they have had sex with a different girl every few weeks yet our minds may associate the person as a “man whore” and start to ask ourselves why the person gets so much attention as compared to oneself. It is the over exaggeration and comparison that makes a friendly discussion of sex so toxic. Hirsch explains the discussion of sex among youth adults exclaiming, “Most students have an exaggerated sense of how much sex others are having… There’s a competitive quality among some peer groups about each member’s sexual standing, where groups seek to advance their own status, but also compete with one another about who is, by some collectively agreed-upon metric, winning” (Hirsch).
The internet addiction is becoming so bad that it’s being related to eating disorders. People who are so addicted can’t just give it up, they have to learn “moderation and controlled use.” (Parker-Pope, 1) In the short story, “There will come soft rains” it’s

On February 14, 2018, a nineteen year old male walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with an AR-15 rifle. The shooter killed 17 students, dropped his gun, and then disguised himself as a student and ran out with them. The shooter was eventually taken into custody. This shooter has done more to separate this country than ISIS ever could have imagined.
In “Internet Addiction,” Greg Beato explains that internet addiction is, in fact, real, and we need to act. Beato claims that 3 to 6 percent of internet users are addicted, and “we check our emails more often than necessary.” Over the coming years, internet addiction may grow more than any other addiction because of the constant improvement of technology if we do not act. Beato also included in his writing that “the introduction of flat monthly fees, online gaming, wide spread pornography, Myspace, YouTube, Facebook, WIFI, iPhones, netbooks, and free return shipping on designer shoes with substantial markdowns does not seem to have made the internet any more addictive than it was a decade ago” (214, 215). I disagree with Beato because the fact is,
In chapter 4 in the Pathways to Resiliency: Black and Latinos Families in America textbook I read that formation and establishing intimate relationships are important psychosocial tasks during teenage years and young adulthood. One possible explanation for this research is the assumption that youthful relationships tend to be casual and short term in nature. It is crucial to examine romantic relationships between young people because they play as important role in their future relationships. In one study found that many young people held unrealistic expectations to be related to decreased relationship satisfaction and stability among adults.

The negative effects on the people who watch porn daily include “legal/occupational issues, social implications, physical problems, and financial troubles.” (Watts and Hilton,2011) In a study conducted by Mulac, Jansma, and Linz, they were able to find that men who watch porn displayed abusive dominance, increased anxiety, and rejected sexual offers from their partners. Pornography racked up a whooping 97 billion dollars in revenue in 2006, which was more than Google, Microsoft, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, Apple, and Netflix. There is no coincidence that there is a pornography addiction problem in the world based off those numbers.
It suggests that all men will generally enjoy the same thing while all women will not wish to consume porn. This informs the misleading ideologies that are often present in culture about sexuality. In studying the misleading conceptions of sex, often supported and established by the porn industry, a dimension of sexuality can be examined in defining culture. When we dig into what we consider erotic or sexual and our emotion’s impact on that, we are inevitably analyzing culture and what it
Thus, the shy may see the internet as a tool for them to express and perform activities without them having to experience the negative effects associated with their social interaction (Scaely, Phillips, & Stevenson, 2002). Despite the benefits that the Internet brings, its negative impacts such as excessive, misuse, physical and psychological problems have drawn the attention of many researchers (Greenfield, 2000).
