The Internet has been around for decades. With the creation of the Internet came the creation of social media. What is social media? Social media are websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking (Oxford University Press, 2017). However, the use and effects of social media has been subject to debate for the past few years as it has both harmful and beneficial effects on us. I am of the opinion that, social media has brought about more harm than good due to a variety of reasons. Firstly, social media causes addiction. Social media has been discovered to be a highly addictive tool. Notifications cause the release of dopamine in your brain as you perceive it to be some form of validation or attention. Thus, it recharges our addictive compulsion to social media which makes us more dependent on social media for validation and therefore, more addicted to social media (LaFata, 2014). Also, you spend less time with your family and friends as a result of this addiction. One in four people spend more time using social media to interact with people than face-to-face interaction in a study conducted for online casino Yazino (Fowlkes, 2012). According to Newport (2016), social media companies also hire “attention engineers” who try to make these social networking sites as addictive as possible for their benefit as it maximises their gains as users would spend more time on it.
