Are our communication skills declining due to the vast internet use? Technology has given individuals the ability to do things that would otherwise be considered impossible. However, while technology has provided the ability to communicate with people halfway across the world and opened a comfortable space for teens, it is believed to have affected not just the interaction among others, but furthermore writing skills. Although technology and communication has given individuals the ability to do things that would not have been done before, writing online has had a negative impact on a person’s writing which can be proven through the writings of Malcolm X, Gannon, and Daum. Online writing has diminished the amount of time individuals spend reading challenging texts, further limiting their vocabulary. In the past, people spent time reading books, furthering their knowledge however in recent times, time is spent lurking through social media and reading less challenging pieces of texts which leads to a decline in writing skills. Malcolm X is a African American Muslim minister and human rights activist that heavily advocated the rights of blacks with the use of protest and violence. Today, texting has become the most widely used communication technique for teenagers and young adults. It is written in completely informal language and it has no literature value in it. Although the critics believe texting is destroying literature value, McWhorter has another opinion in mind. McWhorter thinks that texting is another form of language that is developed by teenagers. It is the creation of a brand new language evolving from the old literature.
“I succeeded in learning to read and write,” said Frederick Douglass, whom struggled to achieve his goal in learning to read and write. “I never realized so many words existed,” said Malcolm X whom learned to read and write under some difficult circumstances. Evidently, Douglass and X have both experienced some interesting challenges to succeed in the English language. Without a doubt, currently today education is difficult, although not in the same way as Douglass and X experienced it, but some individuals do not have the proper education due to the lack of resources, or due to a learning disability. Unquestionably, Douglass and X have many interesting similarities and differences.
In her essay "Does Texting Affect Writing?", Michaela Cullington presents her argument that texting does not impact formal writing written by students. She discusses the concerns presented by many people about how texting language can transfer into writing, but through the use of personal experiences and credible sources she discusses how this is not true. Her use of multiple different studies and situations help boost her argument and allow the reader to truly see how students actually do formal writing. She presents a strong argument as to why those who believe students don't have the control and knowledge to write formally, instead of with text speak, are wrong.
In” Discovering the Power of Language”, a selection taken from The Autobiography of Malcom X, published in 1964, Malcolm X notes that the power of words is great. Malcolm X implies that the proper vocabulary helps to express emotions. Malcolm X develops his thesis by sharing with his readers his personal experience in prison, how he managed to self-educate himself by reading the dictionary and how he elevated himself from a common criminal to a civil rights activist. The author's purpose is to explain how important is your language in order to be heard. Finally, Malcolm X shares with his readers that being able to read a book and understand what the author is saying made him feel such a freedom that he never felt before.

Cullington argues that “texting actually has a minimal effect on student writing” (pg. 367). She addresses the opposition directly, even citing credible sources. However, she also cites credible sources with better information to support her point, and even conducts an experiment of her own.

Not So Fast” Andrea Lunsford researched students’ writing for 30-plus years to see what effect new technology has on how students learn. Lunsford discovered that students are actually improving their own writing skills with the help of mass media. Not only does it allow students more access to educational resources and information, but it also encourages students to do more creative thinking and writing outside of class which Lunsford refers to in her article as “life writing.” In her research she recalls the account of a student who sent a friend a text message which was completely informal and would be considered unprofessional by most piers. However, the same student also sent a very formal and professional report to her faculty adviser later on.
Malcolm X through the ghost writing of Alex Haley has written an interesting excerpt called “Learning to Read,” which explains his experiences of reading while in prison. He states “I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life. She found that “students today are writing more than ever before.” Although we still have the same amount of writing errors as before, the patterns of errors are different. Many people argue that technology is only making our writing skill worse, this study helps to prove a different theory.

In a world filled with Skype, social media, and email, no longer do people have to leave their house in order to communicate. In fact, according to a study led by John Cacioppo of the University of Chicago 's Department of Psychology, roughly one-third of romantic relations start by meeting online. This goes to show how huge of an impact technology has had on communication.
