King has provided his opinion about education is building character. Dr. King uses his words to create an audience awareness to think for yourself isn’t the same as you may call it critical thinking. Against the common assumption that colleges should teach their students “critical reasoning,” Dr. King argues that critical thinking alone is insufficient and even dangerous. Teaching one to think critically is no small task. Most students learn by constructing knowledge based on an engaged learning process rather than by absorbing knowledge from passive sources.
College teaching a lot knowledge, but is not useful in the real world. The bachelor's degree requirement reduces the opportunity to the real talent who does not go to college. We should get the job we want, no matter college or not. Job experience and skill are more important than the paper evidences that you have a bachelor’s degree. If you are one of the high school graduate student, you have know what you want to be in the future and pick the right path.
John J. Theis provided an interesting argument with several tenets in class. I will first describe my understanding of his argument, then important contemporary reasons why I disagree with his presentation. Theis in his writing and the in-class presentation communicated a severe emphasis on education and civic literacy; this leads me to believe that his first premise would include educational institutions and their importance on the lives of those dwelling in a functioning semi-democratic society. The first premise is a quote from Horace Mann, which was included in the reading document, “Democracy requires educated citizens.” His second premise would be “Current civic education is inadequate to equip people, especially students to be active,
Helping World Majority Students In the article, helping world majority students make sense of university expectations, the author who is Helen Fox tries to prove that even though it is deemed necessary to make changes in the school education system, it is quite hard to make such adjustments, but provides better strategies on the subject. The author argues that it is highly difficult for these institutions to change their standards as well as the entire instruction framework for the purpose of making it easier for the foreign students taking courses in the institution.
Progressives believed that educated professionals should be in charge of making the decisions as the representatives of the public interest. As a historian Warren Susman described this Progressive method in his book Culture as History, the Progressive movement believed that professionals "could give the people not what they believed they wanted but what they knew, through their training, they really wanted." The diplomacy demonstrated this method through the US government's enforcement onto the Central and South American nations. As the US was the global leader in socio-economic status, Knox considered the nation an expert in that field. The nation would be more capable of deciding what was best for the other underdeveloped countries in the surrounding region.
For instance, David Horowitz proposed the Academic Bill of Rights which is called to “restore academic values” by “removing partisan politics from the classroom.” ( Source D). In fact, when teacher express their political views, and opinions in the classroom it creates educational biases in the classroom and therefore reduces the learning. The main purpose of professors no matter their political views is to teach students how to think, and not what to think by providing them with different viewpoints on a controversial matter. In addition, Source F emphasizes that “professors have a duty to inject some degree of controversy into the classroom” to “stimulate a healthy intellectual debate” (Source F).
However, critics maintain liberal education merely prepares for life after graduation (Lindeman, 1961/1995). To counter this deficiency, Lindeman (1961/1995) declares true learning requires a deeper reflection on meaning and purpose and the inclusion of the adult student’s experience to realize higher levels of knowledge. Without exercising this essential component, critics such as Dewey contend traditional learning is passive and uniform (Elias & Merriam, 2005). Even Mortimer Adler, a proponent of liberal education, argues liberal education must develop intellect through coaching, practice, and discussion (Elias & Merriam, 2005). What appears to be missing in Coles’, and in his viewpoint, the general mindset of liberal universities, is both Lindeman’s and Adler’s proposal to move information into
“When you are overwhelmed with multiple demands or run out of time, you can be tempted to hand in an assignment that is not cited properly”(Harvard University). Time management is key to avoiding plagiarism. Planning out assignments and creating deadlines for oneself is the best way to prevent plagiarism from creeping into a students thought process. “Sources must be cited, including not only print books and scholarly articles, but anything you borrow to craft your assignment”(Harvard University). If a student does not know how to cite the work they want to, it is always appropriate to ask a teacher of professor for help.
Beier’s calls upon the notion that modern art needs to be transmogrified rather than for critics to comprehend the process of visual literacy. Beier’s states that visual literacy is a “more recognized fundamental skill” (39) and suggests that artist’s focus on “resistance rather conformity” (39). This idea of artistic resistance would play a major role in the evolution of visual literacy and expand upon the artist’s freedom (Beier, 2013) . Samantha suggest that Beier’s statements are achievable in a setting outside of academia. With the initial screening being the professor, collegiate artists are bound to the professor’s

Delbanco explains how students have changed their reasons for attending a college when he states, “...yet on the assumption that immersing themselves in learning for the sheer joy of it, with the aim of deepening their understanding of culture, nature, and, ultimately, themselves, is a vain indulgence” (222). Secondary education has become too expensive for learning to be an indulgence. Students only go to college to get a degree in order to gain a high paying career. Davidson explains how dire the situation with low paying job is by saying how the process should work, “Only through productivity growth can the average quality of human life improve” (339). Unfortunately, the productivity growth only leaves a bigger pay gap.
Coats mentions we must “move from the classroom as the locus of instructional delivery, to the student as the focus of instructional attainment.” His opinion, by this, is that focusing on individual students’ needs instead of engaging them in a full classroom is the best solution- using other means than instructional delivery is not only okay but appropriate. Rosenblum opposes this by saying we “internalize an ethos of caution.” He believes that instead of catering to the individual student, forcing them to learn different methods is a better way to go. Their points are strongly made, but contrast dramatically.
Knowing where liberal arts should be taught and who should get a degree is easily enough found out, however, the repercussions of having the degree or not, and how it relates to job and monetary success must be divulged. Everyone wants to have a good paying job, right? Of course, but the best route to take which yields the best financial stability must be considered. Additionally, it is absolutely a commonality that a person can be successful without a college degree, let alone a degree in liberal arts - Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft Inc. is a fine precedent. The misperception Unger debunks regarding jobs is: "college graduates are finding it harder to get good jobs with liberal-arts degrees."(qtd.
In paragraph 37, Rosin’s limited thoughts of educational background exclude men’s competence in the society. He starts by arguing that “If you really want to see where the world is heads… looking at the current workforce can get you only so far,” but it is only focused on the development of society and economy which only a small part. Individual’s leisure time, public peace, and happiness index also can be an indicator of the world’s growth spiritually. Furthermore, she states that “to see the future… you need to spend some time at America’s colleges and professional schools”, and it means that Rosin puts emphasis on educational background. There are numerous educational institutions other than America’s colleges and professional schools in
Education – An investment and stewardship Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. However, in today, some people opine that college education is a worthless investment and waste of time. Against this opinion, law professor, Rodney K. Smith, in his USA Today essay in December, 2011, “Yes, A College Education Is Worth The Costs,” analyzes the importance of education in providing people with job and benefits. His first goal is to raise awareness of the correlation between the educational attainment and income as well as unemployment rate.
