People sometimes do not realize that it is okay to be different. They may try to be someone they are not to conform to what others find acceptable. They also may change what they look like, or even how they act to fit in. This is how the main character, Jordan, feels from the story, New Kid, by Jerry Craft. In the story, Jordan, a 12 year old African American boy, recently transfers to a prestigious new school that has mostly white kids. He makes a few friends along the way, but struggles to understand how he can fit in at this school with other students who are much more well off than he is. Throughout the story, Jordan is bullied for not having a lot of money and not wearing the best clothes, while also dealing with racist comments from …show more content…
Jordan knows a racist comment when he hears one, but chooses to let it go. In the story, he becomes indifferent when racist comments and jokes are made at his school. My first piece of evidence to support my claim is when Jordan made the soccer team in the late fall season. When it was time for his first game, he showed up with a scarf and his favorite winter coat on. His coach made fun of him by telling him that he should not be cold because his skin color attracts the sunlight. Rather than defend himself, Jordan just replied by saying, “Yes, Coach,” not wanting to get benched from the game (pg. 77). Jordan played hard during the game, desperate to prove his worth as a player. The team lost 11-1, with Jordan scoring the only goal made. Another piece of evidence that supports my claim is on page 169 when one of the kids decided that they should hold a tanning contest and whoever had the darkest skin tone at the end of the week would win. This contest led to Jordan and the other black students making fun of the white students because they had an edge on the competition. In this moment, Jordan finally felt superior to his white peers knowing that his skin tone would be darker than theirs. However at the same time, Jordan also began to see how the color of his skin shouldn’t make him feel inferior. This shows that in the middle of the story New Kid by Jerry Craft Jordan begins to learn that it's ok to be different and to just be himself no matter what other people think of
All in all, it seems people generally live by Jordan’s thoughts, and those who aren’t do not have a good reason to refute
The roadblocks are just the different environments and experiences that his old friends and the people at his new school have lived through. They are very different groups of people, but this does not mean that they cannot come together and become friends. The problem Jordan has is dealing with the bullying and racism at this new school, and trying to fit in with everyone, who is different form his old friends. While also trying to connect with and stay close with his old friends who are watching him grow and may not be too fond of it. The good characteristics that Jordan has to help him overcome this is that he is genuinely a good person, who looks for the best in those around him.
“The Adventures of Eddie Fung: Chinatown Kid, Texas Cowboy, Prisoner of War”(2007) is a memoir by Eddie Fung and Judy Yung that describes Fung’s life as a Chinese-American throughout World War II in which he is taken as a prisoner of war. Judy Yung, the author, was a professor and historian who wanted to tell Eddie Fung’s life story and show the experiences of Chinese-Americans during World War II through the social and political changes in the United States. Eddie Fung and many others sought to serve in the military as the United States became involved in the global conflict of World War II which invited racism due to the challenges of serving in the military being a Chinese-American. Fung grew up as a Chinese-American in San Francisco and
I didn't want to be white. My siblings had already instilled the notion of black pride in me. I would have preferred that Mommy were black. Now, as a grown man, I feel privileged to have come from two worlds.”
In S.E. Hinton’s story, The Outsiders, group identity is so important that sometimes people overshadow their own identity. In our generation it is kind of the same way to some people, for instance people sometimes act and dress differently around the popular kids to fit in. While at home they do their normal routine and stay true to themselves. This is so important to the story for many reasons. It is also really important to kids this age in 2017.

Jamal goes to a private school and he is the only African American at his school. This causes Jamal to feel isolated and alone from his classmates. “Because all of his white friends think he represents the entire race” (American Son 54 - 54.08). Due to Jamal being the only African American at his school, the other students think that every African American is similar to him. An individual of a different race does not represent the race as a whole.
These events were only the beginning of Troy’s troubles; he also had to deal with the harsh, racist environment that took his dreams away from him. TROY: If they got a white fellow sitting on the bench… you can bet your last dollar he can’t play! Young people of color not only face systemic discrimination from their schools and the government, they put up with microaggressions and stereotypes from their peers and educators. These subtle types of racism can have a lasting effect on how people of color view themselves and their identity. It is commonly accepted that minorities can face systemic discrimination in terms of opportunities and education, but a topic that is typically minimized is how racism from their peers can affect the identity formation of young people of color. By growing up in a society that devalues people of color simply because of their skin, teenagers can have feelings of self-doubt and invisibility. This can result in them hating their skin color and alienating themselves from their cultural heritage, which makes it

In the beginning of the book, “New Kid” by Jerry Craft, the main character, Jordan, is new to being different. He doesn’t know what to think or do. For example, on page 2 - 3, Jordan was starting his journey on being different. He wanted to go to an art school instead of a regular school. On the other hand, his mom had more power than Jordan.

The Jordan Influence When most people think about Michael Jordan, they think about him as the greatest basketball player who ever played. However, Jordan was not only a basketball player, but someone who influenced the American culture and society. Jordan’s influence was one that had never been seen before. Whether it was through basketball or his own brand, Jordan was making everyone want “to be like Mike”.
This shows the divide even between the top tier of the social hierarchy and conveys Jordan as a strong, isolated character who has earned her spot in society and is not willing to accept anything less. Jordan also only cares about herself and her own affairs. Because she has old money, she was always well off and never had to worry about anyone else. She keeps that idea alive in her character throughout the novel’s entirety. Jordan’s entire life she has been getting accustomed to yes answers
