The skills and resources I have learned over the course of this class will help me achieve my goals in a number of ways. I will go over three of the most useful resources the class has given me and discuss how they will help me achieve my goals. First up is the book “The New Science of Learning” by Terry Doyle and Todd Zakrajsek. This book has a load of useful tips and tricks relating to academic learning, as well as useful skills that will help in many ways throughout everyday life. There were two main takeaways I got from this book. One was related to sleep cycle. Earlier I had always neglected sleep, preferring to stay up either working or relaxing, and this often had negative impacts on me, I would wake up tired, inefficient, requiring naps every few hours to stay functioning, and in general I was a bit of a …show more content…
After reading up on the importance of sleep and not falling into sleep debt, I tried to revise my sleep schedule. This led to me feeling much better every day, and I am now more efficient and effective in my learning. This will undoubtedly allow me to fulfill my goals by allowing me to be more efficient, energetic, and mentally awake. The growth mindset is another major takeaway from the book. As the book says “One thing about human intelligence is absolutely certain: it is malleable” (Doyle and Zakrajsek 96). A growth mindset is a mindset that allows you to constantly learn through your experiences, whether they are positive or negative, and seek chances to grow their own intelligence. I am in the process of attempting to change my mindset to a growth mindset, so that I can fully utilize my experience to accomplish my goals, by utilizing this mindset, using my experiences to achieve my goals will be very doable, and everything from my academic goals to my resume goals will be easier as a result of a new
In her essay, “Inside the Mindsets” (2005), Carol Dweck contrasts the two different mindsets and they are fixed mindset and growth mindsets. She talks about how fixed mindsets are all about who you are. For example, the characteristics traits such as the personality, how smart you are, and how creative the person is. Those who have fixed mindsets, sees criticism as an attack and they will try to avoid it. A “growth mindset,” on the other hand, challenges and sees failure as something that motivates them and tells them to keep working.
There are many differences for me between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. First, I think having a growth mindset means that you are willing put in the time and dedication to do something. Then having a fixed mindset to me means that if something is challenging you give up and quit. In addition, having a growth mindset means you want to learn new things even if you know they are challenging. At my job this affects me a ton.

There are two known mindsets, a fixed mindset, and a growth mindset. The two may sound similar, but they are quite different. A growth mindset is a good mindset; it allows you to believe in yourself, it lets you try new things, and it helps you never give up. On the other hand there is the fixed mindset; this mindset is one that everyone has on some part or aspect of their life. A fixed mindset, as it sounds, makes your thoughts stay fixed about something; for example if someone is not good at math they might say that they are not a math person.
During our session, my client indicated how she has gotten back on track with her SMART goals. However, I wanted to focus this week's session more on her sleep pattern, since this has been a concern. Her sleep pattern, which has been most difficult for her to accomplish, has slowly improved. Recording in a journal has helped her to identify what factors have been disrupting her getting an efficient amount of sleep. For instance, she loves watching television and often likes to watch movies or game shows at night.

During a time in my life, that I used a growth mindset is when I was demoted to a lower level soccer team from my advanced soccer team. I had become complacent at where I was was in my soccer ability, until I was demoted. Although I was devastated I recognized my flaw and wanted to change it. After that I worked hard and diligent at practice and on my own time to be on the advanced team. I practiced all the time until I got back on my original team.
Unlike a fixed mindset, growth mindset lets you have a positive outlook on life. Instead of blaming others you see what you can do to make the situation better the next time. According to the article “Mindset” by Carol Dweck she states, “Even in the growth mindset, failure can be a painful experience. But it doesn’t define you. It’s a problem to be faced, dealt with, and learned from.”
Sleepless in American is a National Geographic documentary on the lack of sleep Americans are receiving each night. The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.
The two mindsets are exact opposite and having a growth furthers a person’s success rate later in life compared to a fixed mindset. The growth mindset believes that their potential intelligence comes from learning, while the fixed mindset thinks they only have a certain amount of intelligence. Along with their differences in learning, these students also have a difference in school priorities. The students with the fixed mindset only cared how smart they would appear and turned down opportunities that were critical to their success. Students with the growth mindset thought about their efforts, and when they work harder it will show in their abilities and accomplishments. I agree with this because everyone will react differently to a setback, especially if they already react differently to education.

Situations Growth mindset is base on your qualities were you can create things that you can put your efforts into. A fixed mindset is were you have set a goal for yourself were you just create an urgency to prove to yourself over and over again and there is no change to that. There is always a different points such as have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset which can be different how people view differently in multiple situations. These situation can always take a turn, when you're dealing with your problems. But more than often is how you're dealing with a different situation that has both growth and fixed mindset.
