The History of Operating Systems In our present generation, computers are used by every organization and individuals to store, receive and type information. Smart phones and tablets that we use every day are also computers. These computer is made up of operating systems which help the computer function effectively. The operating system is the most important part of the computer system. Examples of operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux which are the most common. This essay will be discussing about the history of operating systems. According to Longman Dictionary, operating systems is a system in a computer that helps all the programs in it to work together. But before I talk about the history of operating systems, I will …show more content…
It was in use between 1940 and 1958. The problem with the first generation computers was that it could only perform one task at a time and was large in size. The second generation computer was introduced between 1959 and 1966. The computer uses transistors and magnetic tape as a storage memory. This transistor generates lesser heat and also carries out faster operations. The early version of FORTRAN and COBOL were developed (Nosakhare, 2014). But these second generation computers could still not perform different tasks at the same …show more content…
It created a virtual machine called the control program (CP) on which various operating systems run. The VM contains virtual address and reader’s space, tape drives, disks, printers, and punches. Interruption of the CP was caused by executing privileged instructions or accessing devices. The VM runs special operating systems for certain tasks, it runs several copies of the same operating system. The VM was useful to customers and also gave engineers the ability to test and develop operating systems. “Virtual machines pretty much died off after this untill the 1990s, but are enjoying an Rrenaissance in the 2000s” (Krzyzanowski, 2015). The UNIX was developed in 1973 and was written in C programming language. It was very easy to understand because it comes with an electronic mail, editor, utilities, calculator, assembler, compiler and the system runs on a PDP-11 (Krzyzanowski, 2015). The unique thing about UNIX is that it is mostly written in C which made it easier to maintain the software and debug. It uses high level language, which makes it easier to recompile the operating system for different computer
Helps to call the input and output statements. Helps to call some standard library files. Helps in string computations. Defines the time for computations Helps in character
It was integrated in windows Vista Service Pack 1. It is a Microsoft protocol and works best on windows. It is more stable on windows. It can be configured along with very secure AES encryption. It also uses SSL v3 and has the ability to pass firewalls.
1. Give an example in which the operating system would use a bitmap to manage resource. Answer: Windows, Android like operating systems uses bitmap to manage resources. 2.
x x Physical Design x This underlines the importance of the instruction set architecture. There are two prevalent
1. Describe the functions of the kernel, service, and command layers of an OS. The kernel basically acts as the interface between hardware and applications. The kernel is also known as the engine or core of an OS, the outermost part of an operating system that interacts with user commands. Some of the kernel’s tasks are resource allocation, process management, memory management, input/output device management, and security management.
I have been asked to use Ubuntu? One comparison between windows and linux is that Linux is a lot freer than windows because windows are restricted. Another comparison is windows are a lot safer because if something breaks you get paid support whereas on Linux you do not have any support. My experience with Linux is not much as I am entirely a windows user.
Hardware platform This window support AMD/Intel pc. This window also support AMD/Intel pc. The hardware platform for ubunutu is uname-i. Use Home version is for home purposes or for normally users. In addition to this professional is for professions like doctors and lawyers.
Each configuration has its advantages and disadvantages; complexity or flexibility, cost (hardware and software), performance, scalability and user load. We have software that is designated with a site license, meaning that we can run unlimited instances at our physical address. We have other software packages that are licensed to an individual user’s device. Multiple variables must be considered in deciding how software is loaded and presented to the user base. Each software package has it individual licensing and system requirements.
The interpreter is specially designed to take the script that needs to be run and translates it into machine code that will work with the servers CPU layout. This is better than compiled code for web applications as compiled code is written for a certain type of machine architecture, hence if the server hosting a website changed then the architecture could change. This would mean that the application would no longer work as the compiled code is incompatible with the new machines
There are many operating systems but I am not listing all of them. One operating system is Windows, made by Microsoft. Another operating system is Mac, made by Apple. And one operating system you most likely don 't know is Linux, Linux is an open source operating system and it is the fastest, tho you probably don 't and will never use it. An open-source operating system is an operating system that you can edit like Windows is not an open source operating system so you can’t edit it, but in Linux, you can edit its operating system.
P2 Explain the purpose of operating systems Without an operating system the computer cannot function. An operating system is described as the system software that represents the essential layer between the BIOS and the applications software such as word processor, presentation, database etc. Operating system manages use of the system’s hardware and software such as time sharing and multi-tasking. It provides a consistent way for applications to interact with the hardware and for users to interact with the software and hardware. Operating system is important because it allows the computer to serve a variety of tasks instead of just one.
The introduction of personal computers in the 1980s and 1990s revolutionized the way that people worked and communicated, allowing for greater efficiency and productivity. The widespread adoption of personal computers during this time period led to the creation of new industries such as software development and computer
11. What is Linux, what makes it different from proprietary software such as Microsoft and what is the advantage of Linux? Linux is a family of open-source operating systems. It is different from proprietary software like Windows because it can be modified and distributed by anyone around the world instead of just by the company that owns it.
Kernel Structure (Windows) What is a kernel? Basically kernel is a computer program which manages input and output requests from the S/W, and then translates them into data processing instructions for the central process unit (CPU) and other electronic components of a PC. Application Kernel CPU Memory Devices Actually the kernel is the heart of an operating system. The task of this software is to run the programs and provide secure access to the computer’s hardware.
As we explained, system is the embedded system. So it is obvious that it is divided in two parts where one is the user and on the
