Organizational process "Is the collection of activities that transforms inputs into outputs that customers value." It answers the question of how do things get done? (Williams, 2018, pg. 181). The purpose of an organizational process is to create and maintain a process of organizational process assets, rules and regulations, and workplace standards. In order for the process of the organization to work, a few items and ideas have to be in place. First, employees have to believe in the process in order for them to be motivated to achieve the goals. This includes all employees, from the front desk staff, to the warehouse workers. Departmentalization is simply "Subdividing work and workers into separate organizational units responsible for completing particular tasks." The first is functional departmentalization, which is "Organizing work and workers into separate units responsible for particular business functions or areas of expertise" (Williams, 2018, pg.182). Functional departmentalization is one of the most common types of organizational structure, and is used with most small businesses, or businesses just that are just starting up. Even though functional departmentalization is common with small businesses, almost a fourth of large business, defined as 50,000 or more employees, also use functional departmentalization because it works so well. The functions that each organization will use will differ depending on what the company specializes in. Some advantages of this structure include work being done by specialists, lowering costs by reducing duplication, and clear communication and coordination are less problematic. The disadvantages of functional departmentalization include that cross department coordination can be difficult, and managers doing more for their department only, instead of what is best for the whole company. By utilizing the chain of command, and its visible authority relationships, the principle of unity of command is maintained. Unity of command means that each subordinate reports to one and only one superior" (Chain of Command). The chain of command ensures that employees know their responsibilities and roles within the company. It allows authority and order to each employee and helps them know who to report to. This is important in a company so that employees do no duplicate work or do work that is above or below them. Unity of command is a principle that states that an employee is answerable to only one person, and so forth. For example, a cashier at Walmart asks questions to the customer service manager, and them only. Then, the customer service manager only answers to the front-end supervisor, and so on.
