Gregory Maguire’s Wicked is a new perspective on the classic story of Dorothy Gale, the Wizard of Oz and the Wicked Witch of the West. The book introduces Elphaba, the Wicked Witch from the original tale and shows her life before the classic story, which paints her in a different and far more sympathetic light. Elphaba has an unfortunate childhood, born with unusual physical features, her unique appearance is used by her father to help encourage conversion to his religion. Additionally her mother was very distant, if not neglectful, and both parents doted on her sister instead. In the story Elphaba pushes people away, transforms from a well meaning activist to vengeful extremist and attacks and kidnaps Dorothy in a series of events that lead
In our life, we often have experiences that teach us how and what we want to be like when we grow up. Everyone has ups and downs from time to time that make one want to stop and other times make one want to run while individually they feel free. The Garden Story by Katherine Mansfield and The First Born Son by Ernest Buckler both show how parental pressure, social pressure, and family pressure around an individual can influence the way one will treat others. Once in a while it is an advantage when they want to change the world to make it better for others, but oftentimes it is for the worse because they personally accept the problems they have and never trying to fix them. Both stories have parental influences that want them to stay as they are, tradition influences that professions stay in the family, and they are always compared to the better child that is more like by parents.

What is the definition of a good person? The view of a good person changes as time goes on. However, the Odyssey is still the foundation of human morality. The Odyssey, created by Homer, is an ancient telling of a man named Odysseus and his journey home from the Trojan War. The morals found in the Odyssey show readers the benefit of being able to view situations from multiple points of view. Also, the text shows the beneficial outcome of resisting from temptations that distract people from completing their goal. As well, how learning from mistakes can prevent their repetition. The Odyssey, a text of antiquity, serves its purpose as a moral guidebook for contemporary behavior.
Horse tried to be brave. One way he is trying to be brave is he backtalks all of his buddies. Another way Horse try’s to attempt to be brave is he agrees to go camping when he knows it is in a different state he is only a nine year old.In paragraph 22 a different chacter says I am roughing it and Horse says “You saying I don’t.” Horse tries to act like he is tough and he sounds like is brave so his friends that he is with don’t think he is weak. This proves Horse tried to be brave.
I think Sadie's name doesn't quite fit her, since she is independent, sarcastic, strong-minded, stubborn, rebellious, and often surprises people with her comebacks and insults. As shown in the book, Sadie isn't afraid to break the rules and is constantly teasing her brother about everything. Such as, Carter's love life, his clothes and his hair. She often chews gum, dyes bright and bold streaks in her blond hair.
“Like a ball batted back and forth, a human being is battered by two forces within.” This excerpt from an ancient Hindu script describes the double edged blade of conflict- no matter who wins, there must always be a loser. In the short story, “Ashes,” by Susan Beth Pfeffer, Ashleigh is placed in a situation where she is forced to choose between her divorced parents. Her dad has found himself in a precarious situation, owing a debt of $200 to some people who are of low moral character. She is torn between her dad’s need for money and having to betray her mother’s trust. The climax occurs at the end of the story with her hand hovering over the jar as she contemplates whether or not she should take her mother’s money to help her dad. The last sentence of the
In the short story, "Bravery" by Charles Baxter, a young woman falls in love, and marries, a brave and thoughtful man Elijah. Elijah is "brave" man to which Susan loves. In this story, Susan falls into being a stereotype and having a power struggle for a more feminine image. I feel as if she cares more for things that happen in her life that are stereotypical. She goes for the "good guys" and is looking for the "perfect" guy. I think she is trying to be the perfect feminine girl. But, in the story, she is also trying to be more dominant over the child they have. I think this ties into being the perfect woman.
Ara Parasheghian once said, “A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are.” Being a coach is a very heroic act. Sue Ankrom has been a coach for over twelve years. What is courage? Courage is standing up for yourself and for others. It is exactly what Qurta shows in story, The Girl who was born with two arms and two legs, by Stuart Baum. “Courage is being scared to death, and saddling up anyway” this quote by John Wayne, I think is exactly what Quarta does. In the story Quarta is different than others but she is courageous when she has to stand up for herself and for other kids. This is courage.
All the above verses were mentioned, but there was a major one that hasnt been mention in chapter 1."Like Martha i have always been agitated and troubled by the cares of the day but my mother had a serene and loving heart. She was like Mary and had chosen 'that good part. '" In Luke 10:38-42, it states that "Jesus Christ and his disciples stopped at the house of Martha in Bethany, about two miles from Jerusalem. Her sister Mary lived there, along with their brother Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Mary sat at Jesus ' feet and listened to his words. Martha, meanwhile, was distracted with preparing and serving the meal for the group. Frustrated, Martha scolded Jesus, asking him whether he cared that her sister had left her to fix the
