“Man's goodness is a flame that can be hidden, but never extinguished.” Nelson Mandela. In the story “The Outcasts of Poker Flats”, by Brett Harte, there’s a group of people whose names are John Oakhurst, Mother Shipton, the Duchess, and Uncle Billy. To many they are disgraceful and horrible people who only care about themselves but I believe that there’s something called hidden goodness in everyone, no matter how horrible they may be. John Oakhurst is a gambler who many believe is malevolent, but is actually a kind man. John Oakhurst played a game of poker with a young man and won the entire pot. He then went out behind the door and told him "Tommy, you're a good little man, but you can't gamble worth a cent. Don't try it over again."(Para.11) This shows that he is actually a good person because he could’ve kept all the money, but he decided not to because it was just wrong to take all of a young fellow’s money. When he was kicked out of Poker Flat it says that he was the last …show more content…
Throughout the story when the young couple run into the outcasts and stay with them, the Duchess watches over Piney. This shows that she is a caring person because she didn’t have to take care of anybody. She could’ve easily just take care of herself and no one else, but she doesn’t because she knows that’d be selfish and that’s just not the kind of person she is. I know this because in the story it says that Piney would stay with the Duchess. In The Pigman by Paul Zindel, the character John Conlan’s philosophy on life is too irresponsible and selfish. John chooses to put himself first even if it’s at the expense of others. When he and Lorraine went to collect Mr. Pignati’s money for their “charity”, he said “‘I’ve been thinking, and I’ve decided we’d better go over and collect the ten bucks,’... ‘We’re not doing anything bad,’ I insisted. ”(36).
I believe John Oakhurst is an outcast. He is not like the other people in the town of Poker Flat. He’s a caring person unlike other people in the town. He’s a gentlemen to The Dutchss. Poker flat is a sinful town full of improper people, but John Oakhurst is a good man.
Every single person has judged another person at least once in their life, which isn’t very ethical but everyone does it. In the “Outcasts of Poker Flats,” Bret Harte writes about four people who were kicked out of the town of Poker Flat by being unfairly judged. Harte uses character development, deception, and plot to signify that you never truly know a person until you put in the effort to do so,and you can’t go off of rumors, what someone else believes,or what you think. Harte relies upon character development in order to express that one element in a person's life should not symbolize who that person is without getting to truly understand the person and their decisions. Just as Mother Shipton changed herself throughout the story in the beginning of the story Mother Shipton was furious and not so nice.
Mr.Oakhurst showcased his good morals by not cheating while gambling, however, the townspeople show cased by morals because they exiled him from the town based on the unproved words of others. In the same story, Harte writes about a prostitute named Duchess that was excelled because of her promiscuous activities. Because of the societal beliefs that promiscuous activities were considered immoral and shameful, the towns people exiled Duchess. The societal oppression caused towns people to conform their beliefs and opinions to the beliefs and opinions that were accepted thus leading to depression of the individuals who did not

Society can affect others whether it be positive or negative, and this can visibly be seen by how they act and feel. Redemption is the act of being saved from acts of evil and sin. The debate of whether human nature is redeemable or not has been one to plaque religious scholars. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, this question continues in the interactions between the characters; the most notable being the Grandmother of a rather horrible family and the Misfit, a murderer. In the short story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" the grandmother's superficial goodness towards other individuals is significant to contrast with the evil "The Misfit" obtains. For the duration of the story, the grandmother fears "The Misfit" and strives to avoid the evil he possesses; however, we learn it is inevitable that his existence will eventually encompass her when they make acquaintance. The Misfit seamlessly endangers others with the careless actions he perpetrates, and in return, displays minimal remorse. At the beginning of The Outcasts of Poker Flat, the character John Oakhurst is introduced as a gambler, who has a calm tone and handsome face, with a compassionate, generous, honorable attitude, along with valuable leadership skills. Throughout the story, John Oakhurst shows qualities of being the strongest and then the weakest character. He shows his noble side when he returns money to Tom Simson, also known as “The Innocent”, after he won a gamble. Virtue, compassion, and benevolence are all qualities in our society that are considered good. In history, there are figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. that have displayed these characteristics, but then again, demonstrations of goodness are shown by people every day. Goodness or righteousness from people has always thrived, even in the worst periods of humanity. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” she uses writing skills such as symbolism and imagery to get across her different themes to the reader’s with plenty of room for self-interpretation. Though O’Connor’s work could be defined as cynical, she does an excellent job of writing in the third person with her uncomplicated structure of sentences leaving plenty of room for her character 's thoughts, feelings, and actions to get across the realism of our world. "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is a battle between a grandmother with a rather artificial sense of goodness, and a criminal who symbolizes evil. Argument Essay Are people aware of their own good nature, are others aware of their good nature? Anne Frank’s statement, that people are truly good at heart, is true.
