The Culture of the Philippines
The culture of the Philippines has been a product of hundreds of years under Spanish rule, the Japanese occupation in the 1940’s and a lasting influence by the United States of America. The Philippines is an archipelago, or group of islands, located in the Southeast Asia, bordered by the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Currently the estimated population of the Philippines is upwards of 104 million. Although many different religions are found in the region the official languages of the country (Filipino, and English) have an influence on Christianity being the most popular (bbc.com, 2018).

Gaining independence from Spanish rule started in 1896 when bloody guerrilla warfare broke out between Spanish soldiers and the Filipino freedom fighters known as Katipunan. Eventually the United States who was also in conflict during the Spanish American War sent aid to help liberate the Philippines until the end of the war in 1899. Shortly after the Spanish American War tensions rose between the Philippines and the United States, resulting in a two-year counter insurgency fight which would lead the Philippines to accept US rule. Serving some moments of brief independence after the 1930s the Philippines were invaded by the Japanese in late 1941 before the United States had time to build up a military presence in the area. The Philippines would remain under Japanese rule until 1944 when General Douglas MacArthur could return and take back the Philippines.
