Technological Environment
The smartphone market is one that moves rather swiftly. New technologies and innovations are introduced almost every week. For Samsung mobile it is very important to stay ahead of the curve to ensure them holding on or enlarging their market share. This can be done internally. But also through acquiring patents through acquisitions. Important areas for constant improvements need to be done in two different areas. Firstly, on the hardware front: better screens, faster processors, better cameras, etcetera. Secondly on the software front. With every new so called ‘flagship’ phone, Samsung has to introduce new features in their software that furthers improves the users experience when using the phone.
Political and Legal Environment
Over the past several years, there has seen a plethora of patent lawsuits within the smartphone industry. In the highly competitive environment, manufacturers of handsets have been aggressive in protecting their intellectual properties by suing competitors by claiming infringements on patents. For example, in March 2010, Apple sued HTC for allegedly infringing on 20 Apple patents (Weil, 2010). Apple also sued Nokia in 2010 for similar patent infringements ("Patent wars", 2011). However, in April 2011 the International Trade Commission recommended that neither HTC nor Nokia should be found liable for any infringements. Further Microsoft reached a licensing agreement in April 2010 with HTC to pay royalties on Android based
However it has served people worldwide. Blackberry belongs to the secondary and tertiary sector. The reason for that is because they manufacture the phones and then sell them.
However, specifically compared to the smartwatch competition, the Apple Watch stacks against the Gear 2, the Moto 360 and the Pebble Steel. Key competitors of Apple in overall means of competition including the cell phone industry and other product are: Google, HPQ (Hewlett-Packard Company), RIM, Samsung, HTC and Nokia. As the smartphone competitors in figure 3.1 can be seen with Apple’s revenue, gross profit margin, earning per share, price earnings and net income with its direct competitors in the table. Environment According to the Ansoff Matrix (a strategic planning tool that provides a framework to help executives, senior managers and marketers devise future strategies for future growth), the environment that the apple watch will experience, will be a diversification method.
Management can be defined as getting the maximum efficiency and effectiveness out of a set of activities. A manager carries out this process. My chosen company for this project is Microsoft.
This agreement opened for Apple a new widow to sell their products to the Chinese market. Instead of making cheaper products for the new market, Apple chose to wait until Chinese disposable income increased to levels where Chinese consumers could afford Apple’s main products. Mobile phones are ubiquitous in China. Not only are they a communications device, but more and more, they are becoming an entertainment device. The App Store provides an endless assortment of new apps to play with.
The android version has large number of users from Samsung, HTC and Sony, make it difficult for them to keep all users up to date with the latest versions for instance lollipop, which only a small percentage use. The protected ecosystem gave a competitive edge to apple therefore making Samsung want to create their own Tizen (a closed ecosystem). It could only be installed in limited smartphones appliances that most users did not own (Ren, Xie & Krabbendam,
Threat of new entrants (Low) When looking at the threat of entry it would be considered to be relatively low. To enter into an industry that specialises in electronics requires high capital and it can be difficult to compete against current companies. Samsung Electronics have been able to maintain profitability through the differentiation in their products. Within their mobile industry the company often promote this with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S5 being offered as a “fitness phone” with the addition of “a growing range of smart wearables” being an example of

As a company dominated by and mostly of engineers, Nokia always cared about technical excellence. They developed a particular strength in making quality hardware even for the low-priced devices. As the company grew, Nokia also became more and more efficient in manufacturing their devices. Thanks to economies of scale and superb logistics, they were able to produce cheaper and quicker than their competitors and thus had a strong competitive advantage in the production of mobile phones. This wasn't an easy development and they had to go through a severe crisis in logistics and sourcing before to establish their competitive advantage.
Apple on the hand arguably is considered to be the mother of modern smartphones. On June 29, 2007, the cofounder of Apple Inc Steve Jobs announced the release of iPhone, a technology they had been working on for about five years. It was the first of its kind compared to the other players in the market like Blackberry, Motorola and Palm who were already making pocket personal computers. The new tech had a bigger screen, multi-touch interface and the mind-boggling on-screen keyboard was met with a lot of excitement. With these new ideas Apple dominated the phone market and during the Macworld Expo keynote speech, Jobs reported that the Apple iPhone had a 28% market share in Q4 2007 this represented significant growth in the second full quarter that iPhone has been on sale and translated to a
COST STRUCTURE OF SAMSUNG Low cost structure of Samsung and high responsiveness to economic events has made Samsung more competitive. For example, initially Samsung focused more on volume and domination on market rather than increasing profitability. However, in 1990s, during the Asian financial crisis, Samsung cut costs and reemphasized product quality and manufacturing flexibility, which allowed its consumer electronics move from project phase to store shelves within next six months. Under the resources-based view of strategic management, effective resources available to a firm, as well as the competency of a firm is responsible in affecting competitive advantage received by a firm.
Globalisation is a key factor in today’s modern society with it spreading to even the most remote and poverty ridden continents of the world. It shows how something as simple as a mobile phone can help spread this on a global scale. Africa is the world’s poorest continent with people earning from 75p to £1.50 a day, after taking a closer look and researching into mobile phone use in Cape Town, Zanzibar and The Gambia it shows how local people’s lives are being changed due to the use of a mobile phone. In Africa alone the use of the mobile phone has increased by 65% in the last 5 years[1], this being the first method of ICT that has actually been adopted by locals due to the low price of a handset. Mobile phones are a technologic advancement that have been around since the early 1980’s, they were first seen as a fashion accessory in countries with good economic climates that could afford the very expensive handsets.

There are many companies and manufacturers who build smart phones like the popular ones such as Htc, Nokia, Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Motorola, Sony and many more, but what makes those companies not alike are the phones they release through the years, but are they that different? To compare, let us take an example of two leading rival companies in the field of smart phones, Samsung and Apple, who newly released their flagship devices, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Apple iPhone 6 plus.
