In 1858, President Lincoln wanted to end slavery, he wanted America to become one thing, or the other. Unfortunately, Southerns didn't agreed to Lincoln's decision, which is why Southern States seceded from the Union and later on caused the Civil War. The Civil War lasted from 1861 to 1865, causing many damages to both the North and South. However, Southern States were severely crippled after war, and southerners daily lives came to a half since the war caused the destruction of their homes and towns. All of this was very difficult for the South to recover since their economy was based on agriculture. They were in a bad condition. The South didn't have the power and resources necessary to recover. Which is why the Reconstruction was necessary, …show more content…
When the South seceded from the Union, it lasted for about four years, but the Reconstruction united them back together again and created as we now know, the United States. Another positive and successful aspect it happened, was the right to vote and speak no matter the race of the individual. The reconstruction protected the rights of everybody equally. Education was one of the other successful aspects done in the South, since it was provided for every single individual and it was forced, which we can still see today. The last but not least positive aspect the reconstruction did was creating the Freedmen's Bureau. This association was created to help those in need, for example, homeless and poor people, with food, clothes, and homes. The reconstruction did all this and many other succesful …show more content…
However, it had it's failures and consequences too. When the reconstruction was created, many southerns weren't okay with it, which many them turned to terrorism and violence. They were known as the Ku Klux Klan, and this group of people would attack homes, schools, and churches of innocent people because they were racist towards African Americans. Another failure of the reconstruction were taxes. Although reconstruction was going to help the South, they needed to power to do it. Taxes were getting higher in order to take that money to help the South, but what was the failure is that many people needed that money for food, clothing, and shelters. Because of the taxes, the other failure was created, which was poverty. Southerners lost lands, homes, and needed food for their families. While money was taken away, people were getting to the issue of poverty. The reconstruction had this failures and many
The Reconstruction was unsuccessfull because of some important reasons. First, the South was still aracist part of the United States because they created the Jim Crow Laws, what means that the people who lived and administratedthe South were not intelligent. The second example is that Abraham Lincoln, who started and incentivated the Reconstruction, was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, so it made the Reconstruction process to be less efective. Finally, the last problem was the Solid South, it is a name that the South recieved because it was a solid white, solid racist and solid Democrat, what means that they were not able to support black people. Concluding, all of these examples shows why the Reconstruction was unsuccessfull
Reconstruction brought healing to the nation and the newly freed slaves through Congressional Reconstruction; however, it also brought destruction to them as well through Presidential Reconstruction. Reconstruction dealt with the issues of slavery and a divided Union. After the North’s victory of the Civil War, the United States issued a “reconstruction” to help amalgamate the country back to one nation, like it was before. While reconstruction was all encompassing and had many sections to it; the ex- slaves were the most influenced and impacted by it.
After the Civil War the South was left in ruins. The Confederacy made a vast amount of changes to their governments. Therefore, their loss to the Union left the South with no dependable governments or reliable leaders. Lincoln needed to rebuild and reconstruct former Confederate states, in order for them to be re-admitted to the Union. Without reconstruction the South’s economy and productivity would have disintegrated and values for the products coming from the South would deteriorate.
Maceo Cardinale Kwik Reconstruction Reconstruction was the twelve years after the civil war. Those twelve years were full of readjustment fixing the ruin the United States had fallen into. The problems that had the United states in disarray were how to, rebuild the South, reunite the states, and ensure the rights and protection of the newly freed African Americans. The civil war left the South in shambles, and newly freed slaves struggled to adjust to their new freedom. Most Southerners hated reconstruction and everything else about the North.
The era of Reconstruction was an important time for the United States. It had begun towards the end of the Civil War of the United vs the Confederate states, and it addressed the issue of bringing the Union back together after years of severe, bloody war. It lasted through the 1860s and 70s, and there were many different ideas, or “plans,” regarding how the Confederate states should be treated, and what to do with the controversial idea of slavery. There was also a lot of disagreement regarding blacks, specifically, their treatment, citizenship, and rights. There was a full spectrum of opinions, from the idea of white supremacy to the notion of complete equality.
The Reconstruction Era of American history was plagued by many problems. One of the most important problems being the recently released from slavery Freedmen. Freedmen were in a tricky situation in which they had just been released from their owner and had nowhere to go, but the Federal Government made many successful attempts to help them out. The Government helped alleviate all the problems Freedmen had from their finances to basic needs and rights, and in doing so, made the period of reconstruction more helpful than harmful for Freedmen. The events of reconstruction were helpful to freedmen as they were not only freed from slavery, they were given rights directly from the federal government.
Who killed Reconstruction: The North or South? Following the civil war, the south killed the reconstruction of the United States. (Reconstruction was putting the country back together after the Civil War) There are many reasons why, the south slowed down the reconstruction of the United States, the main reason was freedmen were not seen as equals to the white.
When reconstruction began, Southern citizens faced destruction to its property and buildings; oftentimes due to burnings of the city; for example, when Richmond was burned down by the Confederates or Petersburg destroyed after the siege. Though the South was able to rise, it was never able to match the economic status of the North. The wartime destruction that occurred was devastated and burned down towns, citizens seeking new ways other than slavery to make money all while trying to adjust to Congress’s
“... the slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again towards slavery” (W.E.B. Dubois). Reconstruction, though it was ended, was created to rebuild the Union. The main intentions of Reconstruction was to have the southern states that seceded to rejoin the Union and to establish and protect the right of the newly freed slaves, commonly known as freedmen. Three new amendments were added to the Constitution during this period, giving basic rights to freedmen, like voting, citizenship, and freedom. Things like racism and terrorism in the South ripped through the precious fabric of Reconstruction, tearing it to shreds.
During the late 1800s, because the South had been decimated by the end of the Civil War, .the Reconstruction Period was initiated to aid the South’s recovery. Although the Civil War did abolish slavery and unify the North and the South, the war not resolve racial prejudice, the South’s damage, and the African Americans’ economic instability. The Reconstruction Period was initiated in order to prevent economic instability and the structural ruin, because since slavery was abolished, and the South was completely dependent on slaves, therefore slaves could not work for the South to maintain the economy, and slaves also could not fix up the damages done to the structures done to the South during the war. By starting the Freedmen’s Bureau and passing
The South decided to continue to fight about the ‘Carpet-Bag’ government and resisted the North’s help when it was offered. Reconstruction slowly died when the South kept resisting the help from the North. In the South, people such as the KKK took control of the South and the North got sick of it. Southerners resisted help and decided to use an corrupt government and ideas in the South.
The American Civil War that was started due to the controversy over slavery in 1861, was won by The Union supported by President Lincoln against the Confederate states. President Lincoln’s original goal during the civil war was to reunify the nation as quickly as possible and help both sides come to an understanding. After the Civil War ended in 1865, the newly formed United States’ reconstruction era began. The Reconstruction era was put into effect by the Congress in 1866 and lasted until 1877. The Union’s victory in the Civil War had given African Americans a new sense of hope, devastated the southern economy, and eased the history of disunity in American political life.
Reconstruction caused prejudice and inequality. To elaborate, the creation of the Ku Klux Klan and the Black Codes were both in the time period of reconstruction, which caused chaos and violence throughout the Union. One of the goals of reconstruction was to repair the economy in the South, because it depended on slavery, which was now illegal, due to the thirteenth amendment. The South’s economic system now depended on Sharecropping, which caused former slaves to be in constant debt and was unjust to the black society. The reconstruction time period, was a time of dispute between the Union.
The reconstruction period was a failure because African Americans, mainly males, were not treated with equality although the constitution said that the they were free and had the right to vote, be educated and had the right to liberty, life and the pursuit to happiness. Organizations, like the KKK, were created to harm freed slaves and their families. Laws were created such as the Black Codes restricting former slaves from their rights. African Americans endured a lot of violence over the years. “In Grayson, Texas, a white man and two friends murdered three former slaves because the wanted to ‘ thin the niggers out and drive them to their hole’”.
Weaknesses of Reconstruction There were many issues with the reconstruction process but they were all rooted in the Southerner's lack of acceptance. The hearts of the people in the South did not believe in the idea’s reconstruction held therefore it was less of a success. I created a diorama to showcase these flaws in reconstruction because I felt that it was a great way to visualize the faults. In my diorama, I created three books labeled with the different reconstruction phases.
