The article 'Mother Tongue ' by author Amy Tan is about the variations in the English language the author uses in her life. She describes her English when giving a speech to a other people, English she uses when speaking to her mother, and English she uses in her writing. She tells of difficulties faced by both her mother and herself from these many differences. Amy 's goal in this article is to show that a person does not have to speak proper English to be seen as smart or intelligent. Tan ends this essay by using the appeal of pathos. When Tan was a kid, she “was ashamed of her English” (310 Tan). However, as she grows up, her mother’s english inspires her writing and leads her to find the goal of writing. As Tan discusses in her essay, “I wanted to capture what language ability tests can never reveal: her intent, her passion, her imagery, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts” (314 Tan). To be specific, this is saying that the meaning of writing is exploring people’s internal thoughts.
After reading Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, my perspective changed about the struggles for people who are not as good at English. All throughout this article Tan uses personal experience from her mom to show the readers the struggle while also using primary sources to back up her claim. All the evidence backs up her initial claim and as the reader your perspective changes after reading about how she personally was effected. The author 's main claim of Mother Tongue is to persuade people so respect people who struggle with English because she has serval personal connections, she has fact based proof, and she is an experienced writer on this topic and in general. All throughout the reading she uses many personal stories and personal experiences on how difficult it was for her mother to go through her everyday life.
Class ESL 5 In the article, ”My English” by Julia Alvarez, the author wrote about her experience as she learn to speak English. Spanish was her mother tongue and struggled to speak English in the early phases. She thought that English was a form of Spanish, as there are different dialects in Spanish. Her parents spoke English when they didn’t want her and her siblings to know what was going on. He was curious about what they were talking about and tries to interpret the meaning form the facial expressions her mother made.
What effects do different cultures take on mothers (Chinese) and daughters (American) throughout the book? The book “The Joy Luck Club” takes on an interesting way to present it’s plot to readers. It consists of the telling of the stories of four Chinese mothers (before they immigrated to the United States) in the first four chapters. Following this is the stories of these mother’s daughters (again, in four chapters). This “organization” of the first half of the story is key to allow the reader to really delve into each character’s story, personality, traits, and their cultural aspects.
The poem acts as a gateway to the main topic discussed in her other poems: the relationship between her and her Chinese heritage. By providing context for the rest of the poetry book and through the use of stylistic features, Howe is able to enforce the idea of a spiritual journey. In order to fully understand the poem, one must understand the context. Sarah Howe grew up in a bicultural family with a Chinese mother and British father. While some would assume this meant she had equal exposure to both cultures, her Chinese heritage was suppressed as a result of racial bullying, leaving her identity elusive and uncertain.
Malala employs pathos so that the reader could feel where she is coming from. As a result, she wants the reader to know that education for girls is a very imperative thing. By using vigorous pathos, she gets the reader to fathom that a girl’s education is important and meaningful to them. In the bibliography “I Am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai, the author mentions “Then, when she said I would have to leave my school books behind, I nearly cried, too. I loved school, and all I cared about were my books”.
In “White Tigers,” Kingston tells her own version of a popular Chinese ballad, “Fa Mu Lan,” while incorporating her own reality back into the section. In her literary criticism, “Empowerment Through Mythological Imaginings in “Woman Warrior”,” Sue Ann Johnston comments on Kingston’s use of myths in the memoir, and believes that myths are Kingston’s most effective means of conveying messages to readers. Although these myths are effective, Johnston overlooks Kingston’s incorporation of these myths back into her own life. As demonstrated in “White Tigers,” Maxine Hong Kingston reveals that a woman warrior requires strength, dedication, independence, and confidence through her mother’s talk-stories and personal struggles during her life. At the opening of “White Tigers,” Kingston vividly describes the importance of storytelling to girls in the Chinese community.
Some information about the author: She was born in China and studied in a local Chinese school for a few years before switching to an International school. It provided her the chance to experience first hand the real meaning behind "broken English", and understand how non-standard varieties of English have their own rules and shape a community 's sense of identity. In this article, she shares her views on Amy Tan 's "Mother Tongue" and talks about the power of language. I was reading Amy Tan 's "Mother Tongue" when I came across the idea of language being "fractured and broken". She gave examples of how her mother’s limited English caused her to be given poor service at department stores, banks and restaurants.
Tan talks about the different types of English and the different circumstances she uses them. Most of her writings deal with issues of language and her relationship with her mother who spoke very broken English. She also talks about how that we are categorized on the way we speak. I want people to understand my point of view about what the author is trying to say because I can definitely relate to her paper because I came from another country and my English as a child considered broken but as I got older in school I learned, so not my Spanish considered broken. Tan indicates several different feelings when talking about her mother’s English.
It was also brought up that the statement is significant because it represents the turning point in her life because it is when she decides to become a writer (Group discussion, Oct 3). Then it was discussed that instead of just accepting that she is at a disadvantage because her mother speaks in ‘broken’ English she uses her it to her advantage (Group discussion, Oct 3). She learns to use all of her Englishes, which in the end help her shape the book she references at the end of her essay (Tan, 6). Another individual brought forward a few ideas including the idea that we shouldn 't let others perceive our strengths and weaknesses, the idea that it is good to push through stereotypes and not let them define you, the idea that no one perfectly fits a stereotype, and the idea that she proved those who believed that she was limited and could not be a writer wrong (Group discussion, Oct 3). Following the group discussion, I still agree with my original response, however, I also agree with the opinions of my group members because I had no sufficient evidence to prove them wrong and they had evidence to support their
By dividing her essay into three sections, Tan separates and clarifies her main points and ideas all while keeping the essay flowing and focused. Each section focuses mainly on a different subject, yet they all relate to each other in a way. The first section introduces the whole message of the essay and provides insight into the language interchanged between Tan and her mother. The second section touches on some struggles encountered by Tan and her mother resulting from use of English. The second section also touches on how the language that Tan grew up with effected her later on in life as a person and writer.
“Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan is primarily an autobiographical piece about her experiences growing up in a household that chiefly spoke “broken” English, and a reflection on how this gave her a unique perspective on the transformative properties of language. Yet, it is no way an academic analysis, a deliberate choice, Tan even includes a short disclaimer in the beginning concerning this, and the excerpts she includes come from her own background, her personal observations, something which I found quite refreshing. As someone who comes from a mixed family and identifies as Asian-American, I related a great deal to her upbringing, and in many instances down to the exact circumstance. The direct quotation shows readers the extent of her mother 's knowledge of the English language as well which mainly consists of short, choppy sentences. It also shows how her mother 's unique variation of English differentiates from standard, textbook English. The quote emphasizes the difference between language that Tan uses when speaking to her mother as opposed to the language she would use when speaking to a stockbroker or giving a speech, as mentioned earlier in the essay. Where paraphrasing would have a lesser affect on readers, a
