Power of Propaganda Propaganda has been around for a long time and is a form of persuasion that is everywhere. Throughout history, propaganda has been used to influence people’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. “The term “propaganda” apparently first came into common use in Europe as a result of the missionary activities of the Catholic church” (The Story of) and can be defined as the “dissemination of ideas and information for the purpose of inducing or intensifying specific attitudes and actions” and can be “disseminated by or for individuals, businesses, ethnic associations, religious organizations, political organizations, public relations firms, and governments and political candidates at every level” (Propaganda). Propaganda tends to be associated with distorted facts and false or misleading information. In the novel, 1984 by George Orwell, we can clearly see its significance. It impacts its readers and makes them think about the world they currently live in. Orwell ties together an appallingly accurate prediction of the future which serves as a warning to others. Orwell predicts many things such as the rise of surveillance, technology and the Internet being used as a means of control, perpetual war and of course, the effects of fake news, brainwashing and propaganda. Overall, the book is a warning on the fact that if we let things get too far, we may find it to be irreversible and find ourselves in a hopeless situation with no end in sight. In George Orwell’s
