The cover of the Princess Bride reads, "S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure" But what kind of tale is it? Is it a fairy tale? There are many different arguments on either side, but despite all these arguments, the Princess Bride is not a fairy tale.
One of the elements of the fairy tale that the Princess Bride lacks is beginning or ending with “Once Upon a Time” or “And They Lived Happily Ever After”. These are classic fairy tale beginning and endings, and Goldman did not include them. The book starts with a flashback from the authors life, which is also not classic fairy tale material.
