The Problem Of Homelessness

There are more than 500,000 homeless people in America (Johnson). There are many reasons and causes for people to end up living this way, but the biggest cause is tragic life events, for like loss of loved ones, job loss, domestic violence, divorce, and family disputes. Other reasons for homelessness are depression, untreated mental illness, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), and physical disabilities ("Top Causes of Homelessness in America."). Many people see homelessness as a bad thing and an issue, but it does serve a purpose in society. Homelessness can be seen in many different ways.

They are more prone to injuries, trauma as well as behavioural health problems and mental illness. 16. Do you know how many of the young adults under the age of 24 experience homelessness for more than a week? The figures are shockingly at around 55,000. 17.

Homelessness and Functionalism      The social problem that I chose was homelessness. Homelessness has increased by 8% since 2011-2012 to more than 225,000 people in 2014-15 and in 2011 censers 105,237 people where homeless.   As also the unemployment rate and the domestic violence rate which both are increasing as well as these are some of the big factors . The biggest reason homelessness is  domestic violence.

These causes include, rising costs in daily goods, low wages, and limited land (Bussewitz). Also, it is not easy for a homeless person to move to another state since Hawaii is an island. The minimum wage in Hawaii is $8.50. This means that an individual would have to work 140 hours a week in order to just afford a two-bedroom apartment in Honolulu. Breaking it down, that is twenty hours a day, which is physically and mentally impossible.

It is disheartening when the homeless is being treated poorly by other people. Some people think of the homeless as someone who is inferior or dirty. But , in spite of the all those negative stereotypes you will be quite surprised by how some of the homeless have a positive outlook maybe because they go through a lot more in life, they learned how to live life and not just simply surviving it. There are about 3.5 million Americans who are homeless each year. Homelessness will always be present.

The United States is a successful, marvelous, wealthy, and powerful country. However, one major issue that our country has, is homelessness. It is a sorrow for those who walk down this phenomenal country to witness the homeless lined up on the streets begging every traveler for a dollar. About 565,000 people are homeless a year. Furthermore, about forty six percent of this population live with a mental illness or disorder, therefore causing drained health care and shelter resources because they cannot compensate for what they receive.

Homelessness is a crisis across America which the government has overlooked. Unfortunately, 12% of Americans are considered homeless; on any night there about 554,000 people experiencing homelessness in the United States (Day). Homelessness is an issue that is apparent throughout many societies around the world, although it seems to be an exceptional struggle in the United States. Among the top homeless cities in the world, New York City ranks the second highest on the list, with Los Angeles following at a close third. Other American cities in the high ranks include Boston, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Phoenix.

Throughout the United States, the amount of homeless people is gradually increasing as the years go by. Roughly, a half million people are living on the streets, in cars, homeless shelters, or in transitional housing. Many people who are homeless lack one important thing: a job with a steady income. There are numerous arguments as to why these people do not obtain these jobs, reasons such as not having an address for applications or not being able to look presentable to the public on duty. For whatever the reason may be, these people need an immense amount of guidance and support available from their community that surrounds them.

She understands poverty as a concern for both the deprived and the privileged. These people could be your family or friends, and the fact that many of them are not able to receive the proper treatment that they require should be alarming. Mental illness affects more lives than one would expect and this epidemic could be easily solved if mental healthcare were to be more accessible. Homelessness in America Among the many day to day problems we face in America from drug abuse, high crime rates, and unhealthy eating. Poverty is ranked as one of the top problems. In America today there’s more than 46.7 million people living in poverty. One major effect of poverty is homelessness.

For example, throughout the United States, there are thousands of individuals who are homeless. Many people believe that those individuals are homeless because of poor decisions.

Around 10 percent about us citizens are homeless in America. Around 30 percent of those remain homeless for years. As much as 25-45 percent of homeless people are a victim of substance abuse. Around 15-25 percent of the homeless community have some sort of mental illness. Although there are services for the homelessness community, there just isn’t enough.

Then there is the economy itself that contributes to the homelessness population. With increasing costs on goods and services, the limited amount of jobs available in the United States, and the increase of natural disasters among the world, people are finding it harder and harder to get by, and are often living paycheck to paycheck

Poverty is affecting billions of people around our world and the number is growing with each day. Many people think they can avoid the effects of poverty, but it is something that affects all of our daily lives. Many people see poverty as a person who lacks money, although this is true poverty is caused by many more things than being without money. Just the fact that one in two children live in poverty can help people see clearly the impact it has on our world. Poverty truly does influence the type of care and treatment a person will receive when they need it.
