Should The School Week Be a Day Shorter? Roughly 1,600 school districts have moved over to a four-day school week. Many researchers believe that there are many benefits to using this schedule. Reason one, you could schedule your school games on that day. Another benefit is it would make the week more manageable for students and teachers. Overall, schools should transition to a four-day school week. One reason why schools should use a four-day school week is that it will help schools save money. Schools can save money on food, and they could save money on gas and transportation. Teachers and students could use that day for options that have to do for school, teachers could use that day to grade papers, and students could use that day for their extracurricular activities. This evidence proves “During a four-day school week, teachers use the fifth day for professional development and in service. Athletics tend to take up a lot of school time” (“The Pros and Cons of a Four-Day School Week”, par. 4-5). This shows the helpfulness of a four-day school week, and what teachers and students could do. Students and teachers have doctor appointments and the extra day off is when they can schedule their appointments. The text states, “Many students and staff miss days due to appointments and other engagements. Having one unscheduled day a week allows them to schedule those appointments outside of school hours.
