The banning of books is something I am against in general. I can understand why some parents push to have books banned, like maybe they want to protect their kids from early exposure and whatever, but what happens when you kid goes off in to the real world and not everything is
In my attempt to answer my research question, “Why are books banned?” , I have used three main sources to conduct my research on this topic, two online articles, and one book. From my two online articles, “10 Reasons for Banning Books, and 5 Much Better Reasons Not To” and “Banned Books: Reasons for Banning Books”, I have learned that books are most commonly banned because of religious views, political views, sexual dialog, racial themes, violence, and profanity. In the article “10 Reasons for Banning Books, and 5 Much Better Reasons Not To” Jamie Leigh writes: “Notice that not a single one of them referred to “statistics” or “research”. There are a lot of other better reasons though. Parents and other people ban books with the best interests in mind. They want to keep kids away from bad stuff. It is good to ban books because the ones that are banned have foul/bad language, are unsuitable for the age group it is designed for, and are very violent. There are a lot of other reasons too, but I did not want to talk about them.
Books can create portals to different life experiences and encourage reading. A few schools and libraries have challenged the educational value of some books, however, therefore leading them to eventually be prohibited in a particular place. Each reason may be different depending on the book and the location of the exclusions. Books are icons of literature and their value should outshine the occasionally offensive topic. Be that as it may, there are multiple reasons why books should be taught and included in a curriculum.
“Let readers be leaders” is the motto of Martha Hickinson, a school librarian who after hearing completely compelling and false statements about books at a school board meeting rallied and gathered around four hundred other people against the ban to speak out. There were speeches by adults and even students, and the fight dragged on where Hickinson received an immense amount of hate but in the end, the book was restored. This is a demonstration of how one person can change a lot. Overall, book banning is an ongoing issue happening right now. It is not only happening in schools, but at a national level.
Catch-22, The Catcher in the Rye, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. All of the books named are books that have been banned in America. Banned books are a problem not just in America, but all over the world. Some people do believe that books should be monitored and reviewed to make that they don’t give off unpopular opinions or hurt the public. However, just because a book is unpopular or gives unpopular opinions doesn’t mean that people should be denied from reading it.

Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech.
There are countless reasons that everybody should know why books are being banned all over the world! One of the reasons is that parents do not want their children to be exposed to inappropriate topics. Moreover, some books discusses topics that people object to like dark arts and homosexuality. However, there are also reasons why books should not be banned. When children enjoy books, it improves their vocabulary, and it teaches them life lessons.
There are both pros and cons to banning book in school. According to ProCon.org, “Parents have the right to decide what material their children are exposed to and when.” Parents have the right to ban books so they can protect their children from violent content. Children need to be protect from content that could scar them. ProCon.org also states that “Children should not be exposed to sex, violence, drug use, or other inappropriate topics in school or public libraries.”
If someone can ban a book because they dislike what the book is saying it would therefore be saying their freedom of speech is valued more than the authors. Banning books also disregards the students' rights because the First Amendment allows them to "read and view what they wish" (First Amendment). Failing to let students read books they want makes it seem like their rights aren't protected. By incorporating all these different lifestyles, educators are informing and sharing with children the diversity of the world around them. Children’s literature has the power to broaden students’ perspectives on history, race, culture, and more. A current controversial trend we are currently facing with children’s books is the book ban on underrepresented and minority people and cultures. Florida is one of the many states that are currently banning books that include critical race theory, or any material that focuses on race or racism and how it has affected a certain group of people.
