In his State of the State address, Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that our state’s economy is greater than that of Australia, Canada, and even Russia. Nevertheless, according to The Texas Tribune, Texas ranks last in school spending per student. This legislative session, the focus on school finance has shifted to “school choice” legislation that would allow students to attend charter or private schools through government money via vouchers. Many of those who support charter schools claim that charter schools are better based on math and reading assessment scores.
