Lott continues on to mention that Even after accounting for factors such as law enforcement, poverty, and demographics, each percentage point increase in gun ownership produces a four percent drop in violent crime. Backing the claim that, “States with higher gun ownership rates have much lower crime rate” (Lott 29). Lott also mentions that Countries with the strictest gun control laws tend to have the highest homicide rate. This once again shows a correlation between a higher gun ownership rate and a lower violence rate. Mauser and Kates also support Lotts claims by explaining, “Where firearms are most dense violent crime rates are the lowest, and where guns are least dense violent crime rates are the highest” (Kates, Mauser 649). However, there are possible solutions that could resolve some of these issues. One good place to start would be a change in culture. America is home to some of the most influential people in the world. These people, whether they are actors, rappers, journalists, politicians, billionaires, or anyone with a platform that allows them to reach a considerable amount of people have an impact on the way people think. Far too often these “role models” talk about, justify, and glorify things that should not be accepted as right or acceptable in civilized society. For instance, a rapper talking about things such as skipping school and joining gangs negatively affects the way a young child thinks. This could undermine the necessity of an education to the child and cause the thought of committing crimes and joining a gang to seem more appealing. Which could, unfortunately, lead to another number being added to the yearly homicide
