Is our country a safe environment to live in? Is it somewhere where you don't have to constantly worry about violence? Or is it somewhere where you can go to school or work feeling protected and safe? The lack of involvement in gun control is leading to the increase in violence and causing severe problems in our society. Through the second amendment, gun control has become an issue to American society. The dangers of these weapons are not a secret, it’s merely the nature of guns. Some people argue that guns were created to protect oneself, while others suggest that they were created to destroy and harm an intended target. Gun control should start to be taken seriously and new, stricter laws should be created and should include stricter guidelines
This shows that incidents that people are killed or hurt accidentally, are very common. In Hayden, Idaho, a 2-year old grabbed a handgun from his mother 's purse and, accidentally, shot his mother dead, according to the New York Times (Johnson) . This demonstrates that even a toddler, can pull the trigger of a handgun resulting death or a serious injury; just like the toddler who killed his own mother, unintentionally. Another reason why handguns should not be allowed in the hands of the people is that according to BBC News, there have been 1.4 million homicides using firearms between 1968 and 2011 ("Guns In"). This validates that so many people have died between the period and so many lives have been lost to firearms; weapons like those are extremely dangerous.
Passing gun control legislation that creates a universal background check and gun database system as well as passing mental health legislation that improves the health care system’s protocols and policies for assisting people with mental health disorders and that enacts counseling programs in communities and schools will decrease the likelihood of mass shootings in schools. The United States is bitterly divided. Issues of great concern, such as the rise of mass shootings, are partisanized. Both sides of the debate will not comprise or listen to what their opponents have to say. Groups from both sides can only agree that one innocent life taken from gun violence is one too many.
The shootings that have happened in schools throughout America over the past few months has divided Americans on what they need to do as a nation to stop additional shootings from occouring. Many believe that creating new laws on buying weapons by requiring background checks, holding adults liable for the actions of their kids and requiring safety devices on weapons to stop youngsters will stop these massacres in schools from happening, it 's a step in the right direction, however, it 's not good enough nor is it effective enough, America needs well regulated gun laws and the politicians must understand that the laws should be based on facts, not opinions. There are several problems that need to be looked at in order to determine which laws are necessary. According to a recent study, America has the highest amount gun related deaths every year in the world. “Germany, has 371 gun related deaths, France 255, Canada 165, the united kingdom 68, Australia 65, Japan 39 and America, 11,200”.
Just in In the United States itself has been said that a gun has been the top most violent weapon in violent crimes. Just into 2011, 128,900 of crimes were committed with firearms(Klimas). Also in the year of 2014,8,124 murders were used just by fire-arms(Quadl). Gun control is not only entirely reasonable but also certain to be effective. Some of the society needs to recognize in-state Manning fully that legally owning or selling guns only puts another life at risk.
Lott continues on to mention that Even after accounting for factors such as law enforcement, poverty, and demographics, each percentage point increase in gun ownership produces a four percent drop in violent crime. Backing the claim that, “States with higher gun ownership rates have much lower crime rate” (Lott 29). Lott also mentions that Countries with the strictest gun control laws tend to have the highest homicide rate. This once again shows a correlation between a higher gun ownership rate and a lower violence rate. Mauser and Kates also support Lotts claims by explaining, “Where firearms are most dense violent crime rates are the lowest, and where guns are least dense violent crime rates are the highest” (Kates, Mauser 649).
If any weapon as these features, then the U.S. can determine how many people own these types of weapons from gun records. Following this, mass shootings have been a rising issue in the United States. “In 2011, a gunman opened fire at a political event held by representative Gabriel Giffords (D, Arizona) in Tuscon, Arizona, badly wounding the congresswoman and killing six people using a handgun capable of firing 33 rounds without reloading” (“Assault Weapons”). Undeniably mass shootings are something nobody wants to witness, the United States needs to figure out a way to stop these fatal shootings. In Brief, the debate about the Second Amendment, Characteristics of an assault weapon, and the rising mass shootings is why gun control has been a nation-wide
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. " Yes, I agree that the Second Amendment of the Constitution shall be changed. There are many uses for guns. Policemen need them to handle their job, and a sense of security for some people. Nevertheless there are also many risks you have by owning guns.
(2) With those advancements in technology, does it make sense for the general public to still have access to these types of weapons? During the infancy of our nation, it was not possible to drive to the local sporting goods store and buy 1000’s of rounds of ammunition, no questions asked. Most of us are in agreement we need
What if I told you that you that control actually increases criminal activity? You would probably think I was crazy. Gun control is not always the best solution, as everyone assumes. There are many positive outcomes of having and living in a gun friendly state or community. It allows security, lower crime rates, and allows hunting.
The law is never something to take lightly especially when the specific law is set in place to prevent the loss of human life. Gun control laws have a basis set by the federal government and are expanded upon by each individual state as they deem fit. Federal gun laws and state gun laws have their similarities and differences, but both are set in place as a barrier of protection against those who could cause bodily harm to others if equipped with such power that a gun holds. The U.S federal Government has its own set of regulations concerning firearms and the state of California builds upon them to create a stronger gun policy, meaning both sets of codes and regulations have similarities and differences, but no matter the differences, these laws are set in place to prevent massacres like the Las Vegas, Nevada shooting, and while California gun laws are built upon federal laws, they can be improved for a safer more controlled environment. Federal gun laws are the foundation for state laws and the building blocks for more advanced restrictions set by individual
The cultural aspects of a society have always had an exceptional impact in the way the population functions. Where an individual lives will determine the state of mind he/she will have when approached with many situations that include, amongst many others, forms of expression, medicinal approaches, disciplinary techniques, and even violence within the society. The United States is a powerful country with a culture largely and unknowingly aimed towards violence. As a result, citizens feel unsafe and politicians are looking for solutions to this rising problem. The most common debate throughout the nation is that of gun control and whether or not guns are actually to blame for the decrease in public safety.
The U.S alone has 35% to 50% of the world 's civilian owned Firearms(Time 2013. Pg 14, 15). Most likely you have at least one or know someone that keeps a gun in their house. Because of mass shootings we hear about in the news such as, the theater shooting in Aurora Co. in 2012 and Columbine massacre in 1999, the most recent that took place in Hesston at Excel industries. There is a problem with gun related violence in the U.S. but there is a perception that it has suddenly worsened, in reality things have been in bad for a while.
"’Make no mistake -- they 're coming for our guns. And we freedom-loving gun lovers are totally defenseless! Other than, you know, the guns’ -Stephen Colbert” (Kurtzman 1). There are as many people who advocate for pro gun laws as the people who are opposed, which is the reason why gun control has become one of the most controversial topics as of right now. America is truly split between those who advocate for gun control and those who are opposed.
The con side of gun control laws made good points as to why more laws would not be in the benefit of the people but they did not provide credible sources to increase the credibility of their claims. A lot of their references included well known newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune and the NY Times. While they did reference the Supreme Court, US Fish and Wildlife Services, and the Heritage Foundation I believe that these few sources are not enough to support their claims and make them credible. When looking at their Top Con quotes I found that they used a lot more credible sources such as US representatives, senators, and the Founder and President of Crime Prevention Research Center. Therefore they were able to make their claims more credible.
Guns are responsible for almost thirty thousand deaths a year in America a little bit more than half of those deaths are suicides. America has a big problem with guns there are about 280 million to 300 million guns in private hands of americans. Gun shops need to do more background checks and see their mental health that could stop and incident like the gunmen who took thirty two lives at Virginia Tech in 2007. There have been more shootings like this one in various schools around the country.
