What is really considered to be Human Trafficking? Is it not listening when someone tells you no or is it deeper than that? Sex trafficking is the biggest issue that comes to mind when someone mentions human trafficking. Forced labor, which some would disagree, is also considered human trafficking. Human trafficking is all over the world, not just the United States. Not everyone is able to share what they have gone through after experiencing trafficking, but it needs to be held in a serious manner rather than being told to just put a smile on your face and move on from the situation.

During the year of 2016, according to Emma Ecker, there were about 24.9 million victims of human trafficking, 4.8 million were sex trafficked victims. The US government is attempting to prevent the increase in numbers. This can also be interpreted as modern-day slavery. A major example of forced labor would be child labor. While child labor is a major topic when referencing forced labor, it is not the only topic. As reported by Emma Ecker, in 2016 20.1 million victims were labeled as labor trafficking victims, globally. These victims were forced to work under threats. This is very prevalent in factories. 9.2 million were men, 10.9 million were women, and 3.3 million were children. These statistics show that not just adults are struggling with human trafficking. The law in the United States for child labor consists of being 14 years minimum for employment. The Fair Labor Standards Act also limits the hours worked by anyone under the age of 16 (Age Requirements). Each state has different laws that go more in depth of the employment of children. This can prevent kids from being overworked while they are still minors. Child labor pertains to the exploitation of minors where their childhood is forfeited due to the tasks and responsibilities hindering their attendance in school or imposing physical, mental, and school determinants. Child labor is a form of abuse and it hinders their human rights and freedoms. “During kids' initial phases of development, children are susceptible to injuries despite a potential lack of immediate signs of physical and psychological health issues” (Ried). Some forms of child labor consist of “slavery or similar practices, child trafficking, forced armed conflict, prostitution, pornography, drug production, and hazardous work that can cause injury or moral corruption. ”(Ried)
There will be no solution to the growing problem of human trafficking until more people are aware of how human trafficking takes place, until states begin to deter human trafficking more effectively, and until more individuals take an active role in reporting possible acts of trafficking to the proper authorities. Therefore human trafficking cannot be defined as any one particular crime; it is not simply sexual exploitation.
