While universal background checks seem like common sense, gun lobbyists say that criminals could just get their guns from the black market so there is no point controlling all gun sales (Sullum). Despite this, if the checks stopped only one person, they would be effective. The solution to the problem regarding controlling all gun sales is a simple one — implement universal background checks.
Kristof somewhat effectively argues that if guns and their owners were controlled in the same way that cars and their drivers are, thousands of lives could be protected each year by using persuasive techniques. Kristof’s essay adequately compares car regulations to gun control. He is extremely comprehensive on reasons why we should have gun regulations similar to automobiles controls. Kristof contrasts the statistics of firearm and automobile deaths to move the readers to harmonize with his opinion of the subject.
Regulating guns will not stop all of the killings that are occurring in America, and there are better ways to cease the killings than regulating guns. Body Paragraph One: Topic Sentence: Regulating mental health will be more effective in ceasing killings with guns than regulating guns. In an analysis provided, 22 percent of the perpetrators of 235 mass killing, could be considered mentally ill, many of which were carried out with firearms (Qui). Almost 25% of mass shooting killers are being considered mentally ill
One reason to keep guns in the hands of the people is fairly simple, but its impact is highly underestimated: guns stop criminals and in some cases prevent the crime before it even begins. Criminals are less likely to commit a crime with a gun such as mugging if they believe that there is a chance that they will get shot in the process. In situations a bit more extreme such as mass shootings, guns owners have the ability to take out the shooter and prevent a much greater loss of life from happening. According to an article published in Investors Business Daily, “A major factor in determining how many people are harmed by these killers is the amount of time that elapses between when the attack starts and someone is able to arrive on the scene with a gun” (Lott). Often times civilians with concealed carry permits are on the scene much sooner than possible for law enforcement.
Secondly, most people even if they can not get a gun they will easily just steal it. Banning guns will not do anything except make people steal more to get a gun which will just cause more problems. Also making stricter gun laws will also include police officers which will give them a disadvantage if they have no gun or have new rules while using the weapon.
Likewise why should the government have to deal with these problems. The court system should not have to deal with these cases on gun violence they have more important problems to deal with. Court systems should not have to deal with unstable people who own and gun who have caused panic throughout their town or city. Stated in the article “10 Advantages and Disadvantages of Gun Control”, “ Funds could even be set aside so that licensing and safety classes are low-cost or free.”
Crime is happening around us all the time, it is more common than people realize and similarly criminals are around us all the time too. Whether it is a poor man stealing some food from a store or a sociopath who is planning to kill someone, there is no definition of what a criminal looks like. In most cases death penalty has been considered the only way to justify a victim without acknowledging the fact there is so much more to the story and people are not even aware of it. However, that does not mean that every kind of criminal deserves a death penalty and such kind of inhuman punishments doesn’t always help in deterring crime.
The United States of America is known to be a free country, but would it be defined as being free if permission is granted for citizens to have access to a gun(s) with them wherever they go? In my perspective, I strongly disagree with the fact of that specific reason which makes America an unfree country. This is hazardous because by carrying a gun around with you will often have the reasons like safety but it could also make you a terrorist like other people who want to use it to plot murder occasionally for money or revenge. Some people would agree and disagree with this idea because of many reasons. I personally think that banning guns is a better idea than keeping them for all citizens.
There is not effective protection against anybody who is prepared to die, while murdering the largest possible number of people. 3. Fox and DeLateur (2014) claim that mental illness and risk of extreme violence will always exist, and are not an issue specific to the United States. The private ownership of firearms enables determined individuals in this country with effective means to kills numerous people in a very short time, before law enforcement can effectively intervene. B. Zimring (1968) added that the private ownership of firearms makes violent crime more
“There have been fewer than 20 terror-related deaths on American soil since 9/11 and about 364,000 deaths caused by privately owned firearms.” (Burnett, 2015) Using a second amendment is part of an old rule. We have to start changing this. Nowadays, the police are widely spread, which means people are quite safe and there is no need for keeping guns.
Concealed carry on campus will result in increased crime. Non-supporters say that the more guns in a concentrated place means more crime in that place. Their arguments are interesting and have great
People also “...support the rights of hunters, sport shooters, and recreational gunmen.” (openreader.org).Criminals are already breaking the law, so adding more won 't deter them. “Criminals will get hold of guns – indeed, by definition, if guns are outlawed, one becomes a criminal just by acquiring one – and leave non-criminals more vulnerable than ever.” (bigthink.com). Gun control laws do not help deter, and only slightly inconvenience them.
Certain people that are not allowed to buy guns in shops can still purchase them from private sellers or gun shows, where background checks are not actually required (Nakaya 10). Which is why criminals are still able to purchase guns, since they know of places where background checks are not required. In addition to that, anyone can sell their gun to another person without a license to sell or without completing a background check (Gun Control 109). Even though some places do require background checks there are still many flaws that can happen such as mental illness and certain criminal felonies. A flaw in the background checking system is what allowed Dylann Roof to purchase a gun then shoot people in a bible study at church.
There are about two hundred million gun owners in this country and only a tiny fraction of gun owners commit crimes. Gun violence is only a major issue on television because of all the
CJ Grisham, the writer of this article, states that open carry is a good thing in America. He states that if a criminal sees a target with a gun they aren’t as likely to attack them because “Criminals prefer soft targets.” Even though CJ makes a good point here, he is forgetting some key information. What about the criminal? Open carry gives everyone the right to carry their guns out in the open, even the criminal attacking other people.
