In recent years, parental involvement in children’s schooling has gained increasing focus and interest both in research and in parent-teacher discourse. Involvement of parents in school includes helping the child at home with his school work, participating in teacher-parent conferences and taking part in various school activities. The idea that parents’ involvement in their children’s schooling can change their educational path has inspired many policy makers. They initiate plans that involve parents and by that help close the gaps caused by race and class, improve children 's learning and advance failing schools (Thurston, Domina, 2005).
Although policy makers emphasize the positive aspects of this involvement, some studies show that this has yet to be determined. This paper will discuss the advantages and disadvantages that the research deals with, and will try to provide an answer. …show more content…

Epstein (2010) discusses the importance of a partnership between the educators, the parents and the community. When schools view the student as a child, they want to cooperate with the parents and create a community that is beneficial to the child’s development and education. In this partnership, the administrators form a “family like” school. That is, the school recognizes each student as an individual and accepts all families. The parents on their side create a “school like” family. In other words, they emphasise the importance of education, homework and activities that lead to academic success. Those partnerships make the school years important and meaningful.
