The proposition of pit bull bans continues to create passionate debates. Repeatedly, this issue of bans has been brought to the public’s attention through news outlets continuing to question the relevancy of such bans. Should we have breed-specific bans? Are pit bulls truly as bad as many portray them to be? The Denver Post Editorial Board recently published “Pitbull Bans Are Still Justified” on 29 January 2018. This article discusses the city of Castle Rock’s plans to revisit the ban on pit bulls. Currently, pit bulls are banned in many towns in Colorado, including Denver, Aurora, and Castle Rock. Elected officials will be examining the ban on pit bulls to decide if they still make sense for the town of Castle Rock. The American pit bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier, and the Staffordshire bull terrier all fall into the pit bull family and are considered by many to be aggressive dogs (citation needed here?). Researchers recently went over data from a study documented by the University of California Davis Health System, which states pit bull bites are more common and often more severe than bites from other dog breeds (page number?). …show more content…
The article notes that overall, dog bites are rare and only a small number of people die from these attacks every year; however, in urban settings it will be more difficult to keep people and children safe from dogs. The Denver Post states they hope Castle Rock keeps these facts in mind when they go over the ban on pit bulls because identifying aggressive dogs is difficult, and often, pit bulls are found to be aggressive only after the
Every few years it happens, the headlines read “Child bitten” or “Veterinarian receives stitches after severe bite from vicious Pitbull.” As humans, we are naturally drawn and alarmed by headlines that induce our fear and panic. But are these stories always true or does the media have double standards. The time has come to sort out fact from fiction and realize that outlawing pit bulls will not make the world a safer place, it will only succeed in tearing beloved pets from their families.
Why pitbulls should be allowed all through colorado I believe that colorado should let pitbulls all through colorado. I believe this because nowadays pit bulls are very misunderstood than dangerous. I mainly believe this because the reason for aggression is because of being a bad owner and sometimes abuse, because most of the time if you raise a dog to fight and be aggressive they will definitely be aggressive. And this is with any dog. Statistics show that a pitbull is one of the last dogs if you were going to approach them aggressively and non-aggressively.
Mostly because everything you hear is negative, they have been involved in another attack of a small child or they have a raging temper that leads to destruction. However, with this being said, I know a lot of friends who have pit bulls in their own homes and also around small children. Yes, these animals
Pit bulls are one of the most stereotyped breeds of dogs in today’s society. Many of the dogs found in shelters are in fact members of the pit bull breed. However, adding breed specific legislation to areas with issues involving the breed will not solve the issues but as a matter of fact make the issues worse and create new ones. As a pit bull owner myself, I know banning the breed will not solve the problem and will only cause suffering to all involved. Breed specific legislation is a series of laws that are used to regulate or ban certain breeds of dogs.
Not all pitbulls are mean and will attack you, it’s the people who make the pit-bulls attack and train them to be mean. Pit-bulls are good dogs people just think that they are bloodthirsty beasts and people should not keep them as pets. They can be trained to be good pets and it is the owners faults if the pit-bulls attack you or if they are mean. They are good pets to have and I feel that people should be able to keep them as pets. If people were not
“One of the more bizarre problems with policies that target “pit bulls” is that the breed doesn’t technically exist” (Hettinger, James). The pit bull name originally comes from England where the
Do you have a cute, sweet, loving pit bull? If you don't have pit bull they're probably banned where you live. Pit bulls are not dangerous nor vicious. I believe pit bull accidents are exaggerated just to have a good story to tell. Pit bulls are over reported and are called vicious and dangerous.
Pit-bulls get a bad rap just because of their playful aggressive nature, and past history of lashing out because of being mistreated. They really are kind, loving, protective, and a caring breed of dogs. I have been around pit-bulls for awhile and the most problems I have had is being licked and licked by them. When a pit-bull bites someone there is definitely a reason for it.
Argumentative Essay by: Elizabeth Mayer Pit Bulls Should Be Pets Think of a dog, with a strong jaw, sleek short fur, and a little tail. This dog is called a Pitbull and some people say this dog is bad or vicious because it is called a Pitbull, however I believe that pit bulls should be pets because they can be very sweet, they have a bad rep because of the media, and they can be a great addition to the family. First, there are many pros to having a Pitbull other than the fact that if they grow up in the correct environment, they can be the sweetest dogs ever. There is also the fact that some are heroes, in paragraph 3, source three the text states “in the early 1900s, the pit bull was one of the most popular breeds In America.
Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL) is a law that bans or restricts certain types of dogs based on their appearance, usually because they are perceived as “dangerous” breeds or types of dogs. BSL has targeted pit bulls for many years trying to ban them and will not address the fact that a dog of any breed can become dangerous when bred or trained to be aggressive. Some states have actually enacted BSL specifically to the owners of pit bulls in Denver (Pit). To this day, Denver still has the law, however, it continues to have significantly higher dog bite-related hospitalization rates than other counties (Pit). Ironic, right?
Now people want to ban the all Pit Bull mixes or any dog that could be mistaken for a Pit Bull. But by using breed specific legislation would be wrong because you would be taking innocent dogs away from their loving family. So I say Pit bulls should not be banned for their behavior when they are trained to be aggressive and short tempered. The American Pit Bull Terrier is well known for superior intelligence, strength and loyalty. in recent years this breed has been mis advertised as violent and vicious.
From a movie it was stated “Good dragons under control of bad people do bad things” (Time). That is the same thing for pit bulls they just need to be trained the right way. Being trained properly is what causes them to be so great with children (Melanie). People say that “pain and fear” are the two main causes of pit bulls attacking and biting (Time). Some have heard of pit bulls that are “as gentle as lambs” and that just shows how easy they would be to work with.
More than likely the people that get this type of dog would just train a different breed of dog such as german shepherds to do the same thing therefore, “banning pit bulls would make no progress”. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/should-pit-bulls-be-banned. “If it was determined that pit bulls were 5 times more likely to attack than any other dogs, that could mean that 5 out of 1 million pit bulls will attack in their lifetime instead of 1 out of 1 million. The point is the evidence that shows pit bulls are more likely to attack than other dogs is misinterpreted to mean that they are likely to attack”. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/should-pit-bulls-be-banned.
Some pit bulls are penurious. There have been many pit bull attacks in the past and the present. One such attack happened to Justin Clinton. He was a ten year old boy who was mauled to death by two pit bulls. The mother of the child wants there to be a law called Justin 's law.
But so are every breed. Pitbulls aren’t even at the top of the list for most likely to bite. Pomeranians are, but Pomeranians aren’t thought to be aggressive or scary because of how small they are, but Pomeranians were bred as guard dogs ("The Truth about Pitbull Aggression.”). Dobermans, Great Dane, and german shepherds are also all breeds who bite more preferentially than pit bulls. A Labrador retriever attacked a woman so badly that she needed a face transplant and there are always one or two deaths caused by huskies every year but no one has tried to ban either of those breeds.
