After China resumed the sovereignty of Hong Kong in 1997, Hong Kong government has implemented the "biliteracy and trilingualism" language education policy in order to increase Hong Kong students’ language proficiency. Some people suggest using Putonghua as medium of instruction for secondary schools but some oppose the view. This essay examines the pros and cons of using Putonghua instruction in secondary education.

One of the advantages is that the competitiveness of students will be increased in the global job market. Most of Hong Kong people believe that English is the international lingua franca that is indispensable for future career development. However, according to Li (2009), being able to speak Putonghua fluently will take advantage in the future workplace due to the rising demand for the Chinese language worldwide . As China is the second largest economy in the world, the status and significance of Putonghua is increasing sharply. Many foreigners learn speaking Putonghua in order to facilitate business trade with China. The limitations for the implementation of Putonghua instruction are analyzed, for example, students’ limited Putonghua proficiency, shortage of teaching resource and the valve of Cantonese. Based on the above-mentioned evidence, to a large extent I disagree that secondary education should be taught in Putonghua for all students in Hong Kong. I recommend that the government should promote Putonghua through media and provide more supportive teaching resources for teachers first before implementing the mandatory Putonghua instruction.
