On January 1,1863, he issued the final Emancipation Proclamation. It freed all of the slaves that the Confederacy owned that was not in Union hands One Million slaves in Union territory were still in bondage. Most slaves in the south did not hear of this for months. Now the north was not just fighting to preserve the Union, but it was now to end
Somebody once remarked, “No man is good enough to govern another man without the other's consent” (“Abraham Lincoln Quotes"). At the initial view, the Civil War was going to be won by the South. Nonetheless, all that changed when Abraham Lincoln constructed the Emancipation Proclamation because it did not solely free slaves, it further altered antiquity for the salutary and assisted the North in the war, which led to their triumph. The Emancipation Proclamation was Abraham Lincoln’s greatest achievement as president. The Emancipation Proclamation freed many slaves because Lincoln sent out a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, it fabricated the thirteenth amendment, and it encouraged other areas to end slavery as well.
The Civil War was fought because of rising tension between the North and the South. The war came to an end 1865. The last official battle was at Palmito Ranch. The Civil War was a war fought because people’s opinions and views were put at risk with the election of Abraham Lincoln because citizens knew he would be the one to end slavery. Southerners seceded from the United States in an effort to keep what they felt was economically necessary and essential to their way to life.
This is because the north and south had different opinions on slavery, if you used the Dred Scott decision for slavery, you will receive no support from the north. So Dred Scott and slavery had a big impact on the north vs the south. When the Republican party was formed most people believe that it was formed because of the Dred Scott decision. This is because its ideas on slavery convinced them they had to form it. The North really hated slavery and seeing the Dred Scott decision made them realize they had to make this.
The Emancipation Proclamation is a historic document written by President Abraham Lincoln. This document stated that of January 1, 1863, all slaves will be freed from seceding states. Many, such as Clement L. Vallandigham believe that the Emancipation Proclamation is a worthless act; however, people such as Frederick Douglas believe the Emancipation Proclamation was an accomplishment (Dudley 168). The Emancipation Proclamation is an achievement because it is an important document trying to free the slaves and avenges those who have died for freedom. Frederick Douglas, a former slave, was known in the Union as an abolitionist, writer, and speaker (Dudley 168).
"I am willing to take chances of…disunion, sooner than submit any longer to Northern insolence and Northern outrage." (Document I). 618,000 people died during the Civil War. Economic differences between the North and the South, interpretations of the Constitution, the thought of slavery was morally wrong what caused the Civil War . The states were suppose to create a union but ended up not happening.
The Thirteenth Amendment, adopted in 1865, abolishes slavery or involuntary servitude except in punishment for a crime. The Fourteenth Amendment, adopted in 1868, defines all people born in the United States as citizens, requires due process of law, and requires equal protection to all people. The Fifteenth Amendment, ratified in 1870, prevents the denial of a citizen’s vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude. The amendments that were used helped the black Americans from the whites. (Doc 1).
Numerous people in the South believed that ending slavery in the United States would put the nation’s economy in debt. In general, from U.S. History stated, “Defenders of slavery argued that if all the slaves were freed, there would be widespread unemployment and chaos” (“The Southern Argument for Slavery”). In other words, the defenders of slavery thought setting the slaves free would cause massive destruction around the United States and many of the defenders of slavery used biblical verse to get their point across. Specifically, abolitionists argued that there are no laws protecting slaves and that slave owners held to much power. For example, in 1852 a woman named Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin to portray those thoughts.
He represented the Republican Party which supported the abolition of slavery. According to Document 6, Abraham Lincoln also supported free territory which meant that he believed slavery should not be legal in new territories admitted to America. As shown in Document 7 most of Lincoln’s support came from the North. Lincoln winning the presidential election caused the South to secede because they did not agree with his ideas of free territory and the abolition of slavery. There were many economic and political factors that caused the South to be angry with the North.
He was called as “Underground Railroad Icon” who was “immediate, unconditional, and universal enfranchisement of the Black man, in every state in the Union” (8, 155). As a formal black slave, Douglass received higher praise than some other white abolitionist. It made people wonder his differences: what contribution did he made to the Underground Railroad, and to the anti-slavery progress? What did he experience and how did it shaped him to be one of the greatest black leader? This paper exams the history period before slavery was abolished in the United States; it explains why Underground Railroad was important for the slaves and what Frederick Douglass’ role in the Underground Railroad was.
