Have you personally been substandard before or have seen people treat individuals horrible just because of their race or for the simplicity of their sex? Back in the day citizens were judge on a daily basis prior due to the color of their skin. During the Civil War Slavery was divided into northern and southern states. The northern states fought for the idea of freedom and equality, which means they wanted no more slaves and the Southern states wanted to keep slaves for economical purposes. Also, women were not treated right , at the time men were bias to the idea of equality for women 's rights.
During and a bit before the Civil War, many white Southern folk took for granted their freedom that many other people didn’t even have. When slavery hit America, it split it up, by making it two sides. The two sides were people that were for freedom and equality for everyone no matter what or who they were and the other side were the people who wanted only freedom and equality for them and them only. That is how the Civil War first started. A role model for many, Abraham Lincoln, gave a speech during the Civil War about freedom and equality for the nation because he said that is what made the “nation”.
“If abolitionists did not cause the Civil War, they shaped its meaning.” (4) It was indeed a war of two distinct societies since the country was fragmented into two: the abolitionists versus slave owners. Perhaps it was the greater calling for justice that many in the North wanted to fight, if not for the glory of war itself. Although this maybe the case for many white Americans, it can be said with some level of assurance that African Americans were not fighting because they wanted their names in history books, but because they shared a kinship and a bond wrought by common suffering with their brethren in the South. The war, however, infused the masses with a deep sense of patriotism that the abolitionist movement at times lacked ("Recruits rushed to enlist, expecting a short, glorious war." page
Once Johnson was no longer in charge congress put into place the Civil Rights Act, an act that declared everyone who was born in the United states to be granted a citizen no matter their race or previous conditions. This meant all former slaves could become true legal citizens. Similarly, the 14th amendment made it so that each state was to give equal protection of the laws to everyone because it too declared all citizens were equal. This amendment also would not allow for confederate political leaders to hold positions and it would not forgive any debts of the confederacy. Following the civil rights act and the 14th amendment the 15th amendment and then another civil rights act were also put into effect.
Both papers had one and the same goal in mind: to increase Americans’ awareness of the cruel institution of slavery and to inform as many people as possible of abolition movements and how to support the abolishment of slavery. Other free African-Americans who fought for racial equality include David Walker and Nat Turner. David Walker is most famous for his literary work, David Walker’s Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World, and for being an extremely radical, as well as an ambitious antislavery activist. In addition, Nat Turner organized and executed one of the few effective slave rebellions. His rebellion inspired other slaves to rebel and provoked the fear that slaves had the potential to rebel against their masters in the southern slave-owning plantations.
The Fifteenth Amendment, ratified in 1870, prevents the denial of a citizen’s vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude. The amendments that were used helped the black Americans from the whites. (Doc 1). These amendments were intended to guarantee freedom to former slaves and to establish and prevent discrimination in civil rights to former slaves and all citizens of the United States. The promise of these amendments was eroded by state laws and federal court decisions over the course of the 19th century.
Most Northern states opposed slavery, while most Southern states favoured it. In 1861, a civil war erupted between The Union (Northern states) and the Confederate States (Southern states) due to the controversy. The war ended in 1865 with the victory of The Union, and slavery was abolished nationwide, freeing 4 million slaves. This marks an important political milestone in the progression towards the modern world, as it marks the day that slavery was outlawed in the major
What were the main causes of the US Civil War？ There are many reasons cause the US Civil War. Such as economic, society and politics, I’m inclined to think they all promote the US Civil War break out. Slavery is often considered the "cause without which" the Civil War would not have been fought. However the primary issue of the war was "states rights vs. the federal government." The Confederate states felt the federal government was too controlling and that the state should be able to act more independently (like legalizing slavery when the federal government out-lawed it).
During the American Civil War, which took place between 1860-1865, the President of the United States of America, Abraham Lincoln, introduced the Emancipation Proclamation on the 1st of January 1863 which was designed to free all slaves in the rebellion states in the Confederate South. Slavery had played a significant role in the development of the Southern economy and therefore by introducing the Proclamation, Lincoln would hope for two main events to happen, one being the increase of black soldiers in the Union Army in order to defeat the South and the decrease of black slave labour which would hinder the development of the Southern Economy. However, although slaves had contributed to the development of the economy, in the long run slavery did impact the Southern Economy negatively by hindering the growth and development of transportation and cities which would in turn help boost the Southern economy. Abraham Lincoln used slavery as a tool to strengthen his position in the Civil War, for slavery was the foundation of the Confederates economy and if he took it away from them, he would be weakening their economy and gaining a stronger infantry. In the early stages of war, Lincoln was “receiving pressure from the abolitionists and had lost to the Confederates in a “series of military victories” (Source F).
As years went on laws came and gone, but over all blacks and white were finally as equal as white women and white men. The era of Reconstruction came to a close, the states in the South were free. They later on formed a occupation army of federal troops and carpetbaggers. Ex-slaves could join the army if they wanted to or they had to go due to how many men the army had lost. The three Amendments to the constitution declared African-Americans free from slavery, and they had all the same rights as white men.
