A negative stereotype surrounding technologists is that there is not much room for creativity. They are given detailed instructions on how to do their job and can be done by a robot… But, at Olson, they encourage creativity. They are given tasks that are, although more time consuming, much more open ended. This helps many of the workers become more engaged in their work, making it more likely to be of better quality. “For me, it can be difficult to share m ideas with others and be original because I fear rejection,” Nikki said. Workers at Olson are required to take classes on “The Benefits of Failure” and “Creativity for Dummies.” They try incorporating as much originality as possible into their work, even if it involves assisting workers to feel more comfortable.

I had to come in with a clean slate and an open mind. I quickly realized that my preconceived notions were anything but valid. I was surrounded by a group of hard-working people who knew how to get the job done. People that used their knowledge and creativity to overcome an issue that only the best could. I feared that coming into this it would be difficult to communicate with them because of the thought they were socially uncomfortable with it, but, it was anything but that. I felt like I was watching a group of friends who just happen to be co-workers. They used their social games to their advantage to differentiate when it was appropriate to have fun versus when it was “go time.” I was also mind blown by the way that Nikki presented herself. I was skeptical that she might have been hidden behind everyone else, because she is the only women, but, she mattered just as much as anybody else.
