President Truman not have dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, as it is unnessesary, had devistating consiquences, and violated international law. On the one hand, I believe that demonstrating the devastating power of the new weapon could force Japan's surrender and bring the war to an end, saving many American lives. However, I also worry that using the bomb could lead to an arms race and a new era of nuclear proliferation. Firstly, droppping thr atomic bomb was unnecessary since Japan was already about to surrender. The US had already achieved significant military victories by the summer of 1945, such as the capture of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The British and Americans also had successfully cut off Japanese supply lines, depriving them of food, …show more content…
Most of the victims would likely be innocent civilians, who had no involvement in the wat. I am deeply concerned about the moral implications of using atomic weapons against a civilian population. I’ve heard of the damage caused by conventional bombing raids in Europe, and I know that the atomic bomb would cause far greater destruction and suffering. I believe that using such a powerful weapon against civilians would violate international law and could set a dangerous precedent for future wars. Thirdly, the use of atomic bombs violated international law and principles of just warfare. The bombing of civilians and non-combatants is a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions and other rules of war. Furthermore, the use of atomic weapons is necessary to achieve victory, and the US could pursue alternative strategies such as a naval blockade or continued conventional bombing. Many military leaders opposed the use of the bomb, including the Secretary of War, Henry Stimson, who believes that it was unnecessary to drop the bomb in order to win the …show more content…
Just as the atomic bomb caused immense destruction and loss of life, drone strikes often result in the deaths of innocent civilians. According to a report by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, between 2004 and 2019, US drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia killed between 8,500 and 12,000 people, including 800-1,700 civilians. The use of drones violates international law and the principles of just warfare as their use often results in civilian deaths. Another modernday connnection how nucleur weapons still expist. Des[ite internal efforts to prevent proliferation of nucleur weapons, several countires still possess them, incluseign the US, Russia, Chinca, France, Pakistan, and North Korea. The atomic bomb created a constant threat just like how those countires create a constant threat and feear of nucleur war and the devestaing consequences that would
The U.S. carelessly made decisions about the atomic bomb and how it would be used. The United State’s main focal point was to assure that Japan will surrender but the U.S. never thought about the outcomes and how it would affect Japan. Doc A states, “Truman believed that it was his duty as president to use every weapon available to save American lives.” This reveals how the president selfishly made this decision thinking only about his nation’s safety while not even considering the lives that would be deeply affected in Japan. Document A again explains how American officials were already debating on how to use the atomic bomb without even knowing how this powerful bomb would work.
During the year of 1945, The United States possessed a lethal weapon with uncontrollable power over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Due to this unpredictable atomic bomb, World War II came to an end. Although the Atomic Bomb killed many lives, a countless amount of American lives were saved. Harry Truman was encouraged to drop the bomb because Japan didn’t follow through on the Potsdam Conference. Truman had many options to surrender Japan, which out of all the options he decided to drop the Atomic Bomb on Japan.
Even though some believe that dropping the atomic bombs was a bad idea many believe that it helped end the war and save many lives of american soldiers. When the atomic bomb got dropped on japan on august 6, 1945 the goal for the U.S. was to get Japan to surrender and end the war. Before the U.S. dropped the bomb they created it and tested it on july 16, 1945 also before the dropping of the atomic bomb the U.S. gave Japan a chance to surrender. Yet Japan decided to continue fighting both times. Since they did not surrender the U.S. did drop the bombs which left japan's land destroyed and many lives taken and many wounded people.
Secondly, Japanese people were willing to do anything to win the war like kamikaze attacks (Doc. C). “In these kamikaze attacks, more than 3,000 ruthless Japanese pilots were killed, and there were more than 7,000 casualties among American, Australian, and British personnel (OI/http://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/first-kamikaze-strikes). This quote shows just how much japan was willing to do.
Truman did not utilize his power well while faced with the decision to drop the bomb. This is because there were other ways to solve the problem, and it was savage and brutal. The relationship between Japan and America will never be the same. It was so inhumane to drop the bomb.
These lives of innocent civilians were lost on top of countless amount of people who were affected by radiation. No matter how good their reasoning for using these types of weapons, President Truman should not have used them. An argument to drop the atomic brom, from a military standpoint, is that using these weapons could put America superior over other nations. Dropping these atomic bombs would make other countries fear the United States army. With other countries fearing the United States, that could result in Americans being more safe, because no country would want to mess with our military.
During the time President Truman authorized the use of the most devastating weapon ever used against Japan in World War II, the United States was making preparations to seize the Japanese motherland. The defenses that the Japanese military were preparing had shown American strategists that there was still some fight left in a supposedly doomed enemy. High-ranking members of the military and civilians brought forth President Truman a variety of choices on how to force Japan to surrender. These choices included invading Japan, negotiating a peace settlement, bombing Japan through aerial warfare, and compressing the naval blockade. The atomic bomb would become an alternative once the bomb itself became operational.
It could roughly save 30 million people Ground invasions Dropping the Bombs The decision to use the Atomic Bomb affected the way individuals like Truman perceived the war. Even though Harry Truman’s decision affected the way the war turned he did think of how the bomb will affect Japan and its civilians. Which made me think that he did create a way to stop the war which is why, I would also believe in dropping the bombs. President Truman had three options which did make him perceive the way he will fight, 1 to continue bombing Japanese cities, 2 to invade Japan, and 3 demonstrate the bomb on an unpopulated island or an inhabited Japanese city.
First of all, in the case of the Americans the bomb was compared to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Truman says in a press release, “We have used it against those who attacked without warning at Pearl Harbor, against those who have abandoned the pretense of obeying international laws of warfare” (Doc I). Second, the bombing of Pearl Harbor was an uncalled for action that was against the “laws of international warfare” and was rectified by the atomic bomb. The soldiers in Europe were extremely relieved that they would not have to invade, which would be a fatal battle where our soldiers would be shot at constantly and have bombs flying around them while they were rushing the beaches of Japan (Doc H). This bomb avoided the invasion of Japan which would have ended in an estimated 1.7 to 4 million casualties for the Allied powers (OI ladailypost.com).
The battles fought at Iwo Jima and Okinawa left the Japanese military forces in pieces, leading the United States towards victory. From this point, the Japanese military forces focused on the defense and preparation for further attacks. The Japanese had little time for the preparation of war tactics such as suicidal and surprise attacks (Doc. F). Evidently, the Japanese forces had already been hindered and it would have been extremely difficult for Japan to recover from such a loss. Moreover, Japan was prepared to surrender prior to the atomic bombs being dropped, due to the successful sea blockades and conventional bombings (Doc. H).
It was a military necessity to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For starters, it was a war necessity to drop the atomic bomb was because it ended the war faster. It got them to surrender instead of continuing to fight. The atomic bomb was called, “ The Winning Weapon” because it forces the other country to surrender (OI). “We have used it to shorten the agony of the war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans” (Doc I).
The atomic bomb brought the war to a quick end and prevented many more casualties from
It is understandable as to why people believe that dropping the atomic bombs was inhuman, however, the pro’s outweighed the cons of dropping the bomb. The Manhattan project was the trials and tests that the US government was doing to try and create an atomic bomb. Without Truman’s intelligence strategy and his brilliant scientists led by Julius Oppenheimer, the bomb America would have not been able to end the war. Japanese soldiers were not going to surrender, and they would fight until the last man standing. The atomic bomb dropping was the nail in the coffin for the Americans during World War II in the Pacific.
In the twentieth century, the United States dropped two atomic bombs, which were the most powerful weapons at that time, on Japan. It happened on August 6 and August 9, 1945. The atomic bombs killed 226,000 Japanese and ended the war. However, America should not have dropped the atomic bombs for two reasons. First, it was not necessary to drop the bomb to win the war militarily or to get the Japanese to surrender.
President Harry Truman gave an executive order in 1945 to drop to atomic bombs in popular downtown cities in Japan. With the guidance of many scientists and political leaders President Truman made the extremely tough decision to drop the bombs. After listening to arguments from both sides President Truman came to the conclusion that dropping bombs would be the best thing to do for this war. It would also show that the United States had an extreme military power. Many American politicians were for the idea of dropping the bomb, because they believed that it was the only way to end the war and get Japan to surrender.
